Offensive Play Calling!!!

If we had won by 40 points, the Negavols would still claim that we should have scored more and be asking for Butch and Debord's head on a platter.

Don't have to pass the ball down field when you have Hurd running like that. We moved the ball very well, just couldn't convert in the redzone. There were definitely some questionable 2nd and 3rd down play calls throughout the whole game. Overall, defense played lights out and offense did enough to beat Missou for first time ever I believe; at least Pinkel. 8-4 and nice bowl against quality opponent and hopefully close out season with a national statement for next year - "We're back, come get you some!" Go Vols!

The problem with that is it's football fan fallacy #1 to believe that an offense can automatically be fixed with playcalls.
There is a boat load of talent on the offense...thanks to two top 5 recruiting classes, back to back. It ain't due to a lack of talent. Hell, they got a 340lb Behemoth (Charles Mosley), who is in his 2nd year, sitting on the bench. The guy could plow some holes open, but they won't even play him.

It's coaching. The OU, UF, and ARK games proved it. These past three games have been abysmal on offense. Defenses know Debord and Butch's conservative tendencies, and even chitty defenses are shutting it down.

If you're happy with that, then your are one blind....

So freaking predictable!!!!!
We are easy to defend.
If we do not improve our play calling next year we will be in the same position next year!
Debord has proven as lackluster this season as I had feared

Nope...hate to break it to you and many others...if we only had a vertical passing game the season may have been totally different, but that won't happen til we get a new QB.

It aint totally the OL, they're actually turning out to be somewhat serviceable...at least one TD and another long gain negated due to accuracy issues, good thing the running game worked tonight.

I agree with you here.
If Dobbs can't throw it, we need to be developing the next man up. Use vandy for game time practice. ( was hoping to do that with n Tex)

The worst part of our offense is that we have NO second half offense what so ever. The state they thru out on UT was that we have been outscored in the fourth quarter like 65 to 31 if I remember the stat correctly. After this game it's up to 73. There's no urgency in our offensive staff and head coach to fix the fourth quarter scoring deficit.

Has your dad taken you to any practices to see how Mosley looks?

you are 100% right of course...has nothing to do with a QB who cannot complete a pass beyond 5 yds on a consistent basis...I bet you're one of those sheep who believe he is infallible and it's all because the coaches can't call a good game.

I will agree on one point though....they're the ones playing him, so you're at least half right.

Please tell me all of these WR weapons we had at our disposal tonight that were underused. Malone and VP are about it, and Malone has been wildly inconsistent and Pearson was beaten out by a True Freshman until recently. Williams is battling his way through injuries. Beyond that...who?

Now that Paul Harris is gone, the "all measurable" team poster-boy is Charles Mosley? You answered your own question...he is 340! You can't be 340 and run this offense. Give him another offseason and he can hopefully work his way into helping.

The teams we lost too...two will play in the SEC championship game . Two of the four will probably be in the playoffs. And Arkie has improved into a formidable team. We lost those games by a combine score of 17 points

Yes we have talent all over the field . We also have deficits all over the team . The offensive line notable with youth and injuries taking a toll. The DTs have no rotation to speak of and a freshman MLB behind them to boot . Those are some of the hardest positions on the field to develop. But rest easy my friend ...there has been notable development of players all over the field and I expect it to continue and I expect the depth to continue its growth

Now you know why Vegas picked us to win 7 this years ...looks like we will beat that number .

is killing me! Is anyone else seeing the same thing i am seeing?

And why are we so afraid to pass the ball down the field?

I agree this is something that definitely needs to improve, but how it is as it stands...
- when we are in pass situations, the line can't protect Dobbs most the time.
- when they do, his downfield accuracy just isn't nowhere near where it needs to be.
- He has thrown some INT's lately and many more near ones.
- When he is accurate, the WR's seem to have drops or not make plays on the ball like they should. I felt Malone should have made the catch in the end zone tonight.
- Plus the WR's are having a difficult time getting open against tight one on one coverage. Pretty much every defense we've faced lately plays a lot of tight one on one coverage, and has at least one and sometimes both safeties playing the run. Which is a testament to just how good the run game is to still be able to do what it has against these defenses with an average line at best.

Then look at running the ball, we have 2 backs that have an excellent shot at playing at the next level. They both have great YPC average. When it's working, we should ride it. If we could fix some issues in the passing game and make teams respect it even a little, this offense (especially the run game) would be deadly. Play action is there almost anytime they want it, especially first down when at least 80% of the time is a run between the tackles. But it seems most of the time when they try it, one of the above issues happens.

Williams was out nursing his injury BEFORE this game. He played today because he was healthy enough to play. Hello? Nice try, though.

Josh Smith, Johnathan Johnson...how many catches did all of these guys get? Hmmmm? Von Pearson's catches were almost all at or behind the LOS. Malone didn't get many thrown his way. Team's know Debord is too skeeered to throw to our WR's most of the game. It's been a trend all season long...not just this game. But you're welcome to try and throw up BS about WR's in the past, to make yourself less silly.

I do wonder why we aren't trying to throw more to an excellent pass catching tight end, especially over the middle.
And DeBord could mix it up more on first down, runs between the tackles biggest majority of the time and seems predictable at times.
Not a knock on Hurd at all, but I also feel Kamara is under utilized. He is a special talent and should have more touches.

Perspective. Mizzou's offense stunk worse than ours, so we got more possessions = more run opportunities. But, apart from a few big runs, it was stifled due to really scared, conservative and predictable play-calling. One touchdown in the 1st half, and a handful of 3 pt shots, mostly because we started with great feild position. Just could rarely take advantage of it.

A decent offense would have buried Mizzou in a storm of sh!ite by halftime, and all their fans would've retreated to their happy/safe place.

MS State scored 31 on them ...with the benefit of 4 turnovers. The next largest score against Mizzou was 21. The average point total against Mizzou is 14.7 with that MSU result skewing it .

So your premise is absolutely incorrect

Josh Smith and Johnathan Johnson are your answers??? They are nice players, but how many SEC teams would they start on? North....out! Croom...out! Jennings....out! Pig....kicked off! That is our leading 3 receivers from last year that have played basically none this year.

Can you read? ALMOST NONE OF THE WR'S HAD ANY CATCHES....and the ones thrown to Pearson were almost all shallow passes to the flat.

Malone and Williams played, and both were 5* recruits. Pearson was a 4*.

So your response is that the rest of the conference must suck? You are truly clueless.

Here's VolorNuttin listening to somebody speaking truth at him

I'm sorry Paul Harris isn't around any more, but you have to get over it.

I think we have 40 different run it up the middle plays. Delayed run up the middle from the left, delayed run up the middle from the right, fake read option run up the middle. That's one of the most boring games I've watched in a while and I've definitely been watching.
