Offensive Play Calling!!!

I, for one, wasn't knocking him about the Florida and Oklahoma game. His offense got us multiple score leads in the fourth quarter. Our defense gave those games away. The Arkansas game...there was plenty of blame to go around. That is the worst game we have played all year, top to bottom.

You mean giving up 4th downs aren't on the OC play calling? Hmmmmm this football game thing is confusing... LOL

Where were you guys defending Deborg when we got beat by Florida, Oklahoma and Arkansas? Everyone of those games you can lay right at Deborg's feet.

I don't remember you guys defending him then!

Intentionally misspelling his name doesn't make you sound any more intelligent. :)

I know. Some people seem to think it is. We did what we had to do offensively against Florida. We collapsed on defense in the 4th quarter, then ultimately had the brain fart of the year, giving up the 4th and 13.

How much differently would we be viewing Debord and our 3rd ranked offense!!!! if we had stopped that 4th down and be planning a weekend in Atlanta next week?

As a counterpoint, the only chance Mizzou had was defensive (turnovers, TDs, and momentum swings). The low risk approach offset that chance greatly.

Yeah, I get that. As I watched with a buddy of mine we were commenting that it certainly looked to be by design b/c Mizzou offense had nothing. I didn't necessarily want them to do something stupid (trick play, etc.) but really questioned WHERE they were running on a lot of those 3rd downs. Putting the ball where there was little or no chance of picking up a first. It's that part of me that needs some "sexy" thrown in every now and again! It was solid though, I'll take it. (Still hate even having Mizzou in the SEC. Undeserving and they got lucky coming in when the SEC East was the worst we've ever seen it.)

hopefully debord is just keeping the seat warm for peyton

Not gonna happen. I have tried to stay out of the "Peyton's coming home" business, but if I allow myself to indulge for a minute this is how I think it woud go down....it would be at the expense of Mahoney and not Debord. Debord would still be OC and would slide down to coach the oline, and Peyton would be the QB coach.

Now back to reality...I don't think that happens.

I get you. The offense production is very spurty (is that a word?).

I was.hoping we wouldn't run much in the last few minutes and Hurd has 2 11 yard rushes. Who knows what works and why.

You are CORRECT, sir. :hi:

Exactly. Why would he? It's a no win situation for him. He's already been through the "why is Manning starting over Stewart" bs.

Peyton back home at UT would be nice but some think he's a miracle worker....if his magic actually the power to rub off then Jim Sorgi and Curtis Painter were immune.

I don't think Manning will come to UT and coach, but if he did Butch would be crazy not to let him be the OC, he is better than any OC in the SEC. He has been on for over 10 years against the defenses in the world!

Wrong .

The offense was limited in the QB position early Dobbs was a managed passer and was unable to complete the basic passes at times . Since the early season , he has come along in leaps and bounds . The offense , despite that short coming , produced very well at times and ultimately on the score board

When you want to lay blame at someones feet ...why I dont know ...but if you do

Your defense has no interior tackle rotation . Two freshmen were playing at that point ...with a big drop off to the second line of DTs. Behind them you had a freshman MLB . These guys are playing much better now ...but at that point in the season they only had about three quarters of football and in quarter 4 began to rush negative from the center , leaving the swinging gate wide open .

This is not hard and it was talked about pre-season by many pundits , coaches , ect . This should not mystify or surprise you . The real story is that almost every position on the field has improved in effectiveness as the season progressed

Let's see Debord play calling got us the lead, then he decided it was too early in the season to win the big game, of course Jancek was in on the plan and the defense quit in the second half. Give me a break , loosing Maggitt Gaulden , Jackson etc , playing young and inexperienced players at MLB, lack of rotation in the DL and OL , and a banged up bunch of WR's had nothing to do with loosing 4 games to really good teams. There were several plays and game decisions in retrospect that were not good, but that's what it is .... retrospect, or in the vernacular of the sport , "Monday morning arm chair quarter backing". I'm sure the coaches would like some "do overs" but that's why we play the game with fallible humans. Computer simulations are not much fun.

Never said we did. I'm talking about games we had won and let slip away because we play not to lose, instead of playing to win. Like the Florida game and Oklahoma game. And I guess you could say Alabama too, but I won't count it. Maybe you're ok with losing those games every year. I'm not.

lol junior. I'm not "ok with losing those games every year" that's what you call an argument from silence fallacy. I'm just smart enough to notice that the team has improved every year immensely, and despite having little depth, has played with some of the best teams in the country. Tell me this, if we have a 2 deep of impact service players next year that can be subbed in freely without any drop off from talent, why would our chances of winning not improve substantially? Like others have said, this isn't madden. You don't just play 22 players for four 5 minute quarters. It requires constant personnel changes (which we haven't had) and getting your defense off the field, aka ball control.
For example: 250 yards rushing against a top defense.

Love Dobbs but he just is horribly inaccurate. I hope he can work on that in the offseason. If he can make intermediate and long throws this offense would be near deadly.

Might get bashed here but Butch needs to open the QB position in the spring and let the best one win job, instead of just giving it to Dobbs because of seniority. Don't care what color he is just the best QB on the team.

I was with you until last sentence! Like I said we are 2 years away from it getting real!!!

I like this coaching staff and where they are headed . IF I have one criticism..it is the handling of Dobbs. He has improved in all aspects of his game...but is just not a west coast passer which is the passing tree they use . I would like to see them craft the offense around his skill set more. I like how they used the option and veer looks in the passing game ...but I think they need to do more of those things , even if it means abandoning their vision of the offense . Personally , I would base the offense off of zone read concepts and play action and screen out of that. Coach Cut was very good at building his offenses around the players that he had

Bad play calling? Smart play calling? Some see it one way others the other way! I say maybe both!
The problem is getting early scores and then getting shut out for 2 quarters and not putting points on the board. Running the ball and using clock is not a bad thing, not scoring is!
We have a dynamic high power offense when the big play threat is present!
The problem is once the other team knows we are going into eat clock mode, they know it going to be run, run, run and we don't have an OL good enough to do that. If we had Bama or ark line it would be the thing to do,
But for us now it's a mistake , it shuts us down , our offense is only good when we utilize ALL of our big play makers!
