I am not sure if anyone has mentioned the re-tooling of the offense. I started a thread after the SC game called Problems With The Offense. I went through the nuts and bolts and issues . Several very knowledgeable posters chimed in and added some great insight. I noted that many , many things had changed in the UK game for the better. They added additional blockers featuring a TE or H back. Sometimes they blocked or lead blocked and sometimes they went out in pass formations. The use of the H-back allowed us to play true power football. This was something that both myself and others had noted and it seemed to pay benefits especially in the run game. Dobbs delivered passes on time most of the time. He was getting the ball out in 2.5 seconds as opposed to holding indefinitely. Play action was used and there was success with it, It seemed like the passing tree was simplified . With the additional blockers, the Oline still ran a zone but it was an attacking zone rather than a passive zone.

I am not sure why it took them so long to institute these changes. Three receivers are just as good as four...when you cant regularly hit one receiver. I have to wonder if Hurd leaving was not the driving force of the changes. In any case it was great to see.

Your right, there has been so much more pistol formations and runs with a lead blocker the past two games. I noticed it first in the TTU game and they ran it even more against Kentucky. The extra blocker with the H-back really helps Kamara and Jelly. Broke a couple nice runs with it.

I was screaming for it before the SC game ...from the beginning of the season really. JD is not a proficient enough passer to execute the west coast passing scheme to the level to keep the box clear of defenders. They used power running , rarely had less than 6 blockers and ran Dobbs at all points in the game. The spring draw and passive zone blocking is just not workable in the SEC. It was good to see them play power football and not the cutesy stuff

Agree OP. Hopefully our staff builds on the positives. Some people are screaming for a complete overhaul, but I don't think the system is the issue. I like our offense when it looks like it's supposed to. We need better blocking, passing, and a more aggressive, creative play calling. The system isn't the problem. We just need to tweak a few things and execute better.

umm we didn't run the pistol anymore the past few games than we have all year we line up in pistol 5-10 times every game nearly. I think sometimes people see what they want to see sometimes I guess.

What I saw was guys playing with the monkey off their back. Trusting the guy behind them and in front of them. What you saw was guys executing the same offense we have played pretty much all year with of course wrinkles put in for Kentucky. yes every game there are different wrinkles put in to exploit match-ups. It is Butch's mentality. He preaches it every week in every press conference. I wish people would start looking at all of every game instead of picking and choosing what they want to see.

Forget what anyone else looked like scheme scheme. Kelly looks (much like JJ) like a man possessed every-time he touches the ball as if it will be his last. Kamara looked, well like himself, just a bit more pep in his step knowing he was Batman now instead of Robin. I think Kelly and JJ set a tone at their positions. I will say it again I have never seen a WR block like that and fight for every ball like its his last meal since Hines ward. That play against Florida when he reached over the linebacker and snatched a ball that should have bounced off his back and maybe been picked let me know. In fact if you watch all our big comebacks there was a huge JJ play that seemed to spark the offense. I am very very optimistic about our WR's next year overall but especially those 2. The O-line has to get better. I honestly thing whichever QB starts will do fine because he will have more polished weapons and a better line than Dobbs ever had.

I think it's the presence of Big John Kelly that metes the difference. Our previous star RB was powerful, but a huge target. Jelly can run by you before you see him. And he won't go down with first contact. Best you can do is knock him out of bounds. He is the future of Tennessee football.

He's his own comparison but if I had to throw out a former Vol, it'd be Charlie Garner. At full speed and running hungry right at handoff!

To me Kelly is like my all time favorite vol running back. He reminds me of Travis Stephens with his speed and how his legs are just always churning! Not the biggest guy, but plays big and runs fast too!

Good comparison! I like it. Garner had a wicked spin move though that I would like to see Kelly pull out.

One thing I noticed from the Kentucky game was Dobbs using his legs a whole lot more than he has practically all season.

I love JK and AK, they actually make the offense more dangerous, they hit holes faster and can get to the second level in a hurry. If UT protects the ball and QB, they are very productive, I think the run defense will be better against Missouri and Vandy.......Shoop will make the changes necessary. With TK a game time decision, the secondary is going to have to be disciplined.

GBO!!!

Spot on.. Garner looked like he had a jet engine on his back

I remember not appreciating him enough at the time because I couldn't believe a JC back was better than Little Man and Hayden. :hmm:

You simmer down! He said he was "like" his all time favorite..which is fine! I didn't miss quote him!

He was LIKE his all time favorite...Travis Stephens. :) It was phrased awkwardly...almost missed it myself. :hi:

Kelly reminds me of a Johnnie Jones with more fluid hips and less forward lean.

Or perhaps a more elusive Jay Graham.

Maybe Arian Foster without the tacos.

A more decisive Cedric Houston with more twitch factor.

Travis Henry with fewer kids.

Jalen Hurd minus 6" of height and a bad attitude.

Kelly is gonna be a good one for sure.

Kentucky makes a lot of offenses look improved.

You are right UT Hill Man. As in years gone by, KY has made several teams look like powerful offenses again this year. That being said, I did see what appeared to be a somewhat new Offensive team on the field Saturday.. It actually looked like, for the first time this year, that our Offensive Line actually had blocking assignments. Also, Kamara and Kelly looked like they were on new found mission to destroy a defense..

Except for the Alabama game, I thought this was our worst Defensive performance.. It has to improve.

Two more games to go for us to prove, without question, we are The Team in the SEC East...

They talked about in the broadcast that Kentucky plays a tight defensive front which makes it harder to run between the tackles. That's why we saw so much outside zone and sweep action. I don't really like to compare Hurd to Kelly, but one thing that Kelly definitely does better is set up blocks running wide and then be shifty and turn it upfield.
