It's obvious now. Butch can't coach. He has a nice offensive system that he just runs. But if it doesn't naturally score points he doesn't have the gusto to create points. No 4th and go for it unless the game is on the line in the 4th q. He doesn't do any trick plays to through the defense off. He just runs the same plays. That works if you have a Cam Newton or a Tebow who are better than all the other players but even Nick Saban does some unorthodox things when he needs to. I watch that game and if it Les Miles no way we lose that game. If it was Oregons coach no way we don't get points after that int in OU territory.
Some on this board are critical that the coaching staff made no adjustments. Many others are critical that they went away from what was working. In the second half:
OU started exploiting the weak side of our offensive line;
We lose Maggitt and later TK with Cam missing some snaps due to injuries;
Dobbs was pressured and inaccurate;
There were drops in key situations;
Jumper's 3d down penalties kept a tired defense on the field;
Those are personnel issues that don't necessarily result from X's and O's.
Last year we were simply manhandled in Norman. This was an evenly matched game and ended as handicapped. It is time to learn from the mistakes and move on to WNC and Florida. These young men have been getting and will contnue to get better. We are competing on a much higher level than last year. GBO
Good post, OP. I don't think people understand the importance of #2. That would have been an explosive moment, made an eventual 21-0 game, given confidence to one unit while deflated the other. Just a huge decision to not trust your guys to get in the end zone, gives OK defense confidence. The way OK was holding, even if UT didn't convert 4th down, I think a holding call in end zone was very probable. That moment was the one I knew would come back to bite them. I just had a feeling the entire game it would.
Look, I didn't like much of what I saw from the coaching staff, but gosh almighty at some point players have got to make plays. Alex Ellis absolutely just dropped a sure TD pass, and Medley's FG attempt was just garbage. So, while the coaching wasn't excellent, they put us in position to win it and the execution just wasn't there. Lot's of blame to go around.
can you name our Kicking/punting coach? I'm not being a smarty but just curious who works with medleyLook, I didn't like much of what I saw from the coaching staff, but gosh almighty at some point players have got to make plays. Wonder if CBJ uses the West Carolina game to work on the passing game a bit? Or does he simply consider the fact our OL isn't good at pass blocking and hones the running game?
I have never seen a situation more apt for a "trick Play" than the fourth quarter of the OU game.
