I posted this on TOS. How do ya'll think Tennessee will close?

Looking at the "numbers crunch" through my hypothetical goggles, I see the following.

Vol commits: 19
2012 signees: 23 (after 2 scholarship deduction to account for Thomas and Bullard)
Remaining spots: 4

Go ahead and add Autry, Patterson, and Howard to the list of commits.

Vol commits: 22
Remaining spots: 1

No way our coaches are going to only take one more player out of Sentimore, Bivins, Watson, Brown, Jelks, Smith, Whitehead, etc.

Something tells me that some of our current commitments are going to get their feelings hurt.

I was told on TOS that if Bullard is placed on scholarship, he has to either count toward the 2011 class or 2012 and since there wasn't any available spots in 2011, he must count toward 2012.

We really need that to be wrong info!

Well, it came from a member of the staff at 247sports so I think it's most likely correct.

Here is the full quote..

Tennessee won't sign 25 new guys. Even if the Vols take a full class of 25, the class probably would have to include grayshirted 2011 signee Tino Thomas and offensive lineman Alex Bullard, who's expected to be placed on scholarship sometime before next season. If Bullard is placed on scholarship any time soon, he has to count toward either the 2011 or 2012 class. Since there weren't any unused spots in the 2011 class, he has to count toward 2012. - Ryan Callahan (GoVols247)

I believe we get Meredith too after his OV during the vandy. He's definitely a take. We're still in on so much elite talent that we're going to have no choice, but to tell some of these early commits to look elsewhere. We have to get the best talent in order to compete and win, Dooley is simply going to have to cut a few loose to ensure that we get the best talent possible.

I am hearing this year may be a little different in that there may be some "drops" and some higher needs players added. They are really after EE's as much as possible to shore up the depth and fill needs quicker.

Doesn't help the 25 man limit which is what UT will be bumping up against this year.

Cool. I had read somewhere that you could backdate if you didn't sign a full class the prior year and I thought last year's limit was 28 but we only signed 27. Must have been misinformed. Not surprised. :)

25 signees per year limit...this is why it takes so long to reload a program after a coaching change. Coach has to come in and work like hell to save the class that is coming in(most likely doesn't keep all of it), then can't fill a roster with worthy players after players leave the next year.

After seeing what we are going through, and reading about what will be left behind at Ole Miss, I believe this needs to be re-evaluated. This rule is what will keep Bama and LSU at the top for the next few years.

I personally believe that a few players will be let go in order to get the best possible players to Knoxville, and that is Okay. These players have to have some foresight and protect themselves. They need to go on OV's and have a fall back option, if indeed they are encouraged to go elsewhere. Of the players that could possibly be encouraged, I would say , Cody Blanc, George Bullock, and K. Henderson all have a shot at signing with other teams come February.

I think a couple guys have already been talked to in regards to greyshirt/preferred walk-on status, so those numbers could work out. Tino Thomas going to USM would make a difference too, don't know if that's more than a rumor at this point though.

I'm not seeing Henderson as a drop at this point. Staff appears to see a lot of upside with him in an area of need. ESPN had him rated as 4* when Rivals hadn't even evaluated him.

Transfers do not count against the 25 limit. Transfers count against the total 85 limit only.

I don't know if this is a help but this is what I found on a quick search. Didn't see anything that talked directly about transfers however...

NCAA rule 15.5.6.1 limits FBS football programs to a total number of scholarships to 85 "counters" annually and 25 scholarships for "initial counters." Counters (NCAA Rule 15.02.3) are individuals who are receiving institutional financial aid that is countable against the aid limitations in a sport, initial counters (NCAA Rule 15.02.3.1) are individuals who are receiving countable financial aid in a sport for the first time.

Initial counter definition would lead you to believe a walk on that is put on scholarship would count against the 25. No way that's correct! On the other hand Bullard wouldn't be considered an initial counter since he was on football aid at ND! NCAA rules are so hard to interpret!!!!
