Notes from the press conference

I'd say Davenport will have a large glass of wine later tonight. The enormity of this has and is taking it's toll on her.

To be fair, I will have a large glass of wine later tonight . . .

as soon as I have exhausted my supplies of Lagavulin, Gentleman Jack, and ale.

Davenport's comments confirm my suspicion that she had decided Curry had to go before he started talking to Leach. Once she (justifiably) lost confidence in Currie, she didn't want him continuing to interview coaching candidates. Whoever they were. It sounds like Currie may have been insubordinate in continuing to have discussions with Leach after Davenport ordered him to cease. I guess he figured if he delivered Leach as a coach, she would have no choice but to go along with it and by virtue of that save his own skin.

There are a lot of negative comments about Dr. Davenport but overall I thought she did really well. She’s not gonna answer the questions the way you want them answered. There is a lot of liability for every word that comes out of her mouth and she’s not going to risk saying something that puts the University in further jeopardy or gets misinterpreted by the fantastic media that was no doubt in the room. I was really impressed with Coach Fulmer. He sounds very committed. Let’s do this right from this point going forward.

I thought Fulmer did well. That spot did not appear to be too big for him and he appeared confident. Now we'll have to see what he does. I still think he goes for a safe, cookie cutter-type of hire.

He did say that he thought people who weren't interested before would be now. My mind immediately thought about Cutcliffe.

I'm willing to give her a pass on today. NOTHING in academics can prepare you for the kind of last month she's been through. She looked exhausted. My guess there's a bottle of wine in her very near future. In the end, I think she made the right call.

Davenport flat-out refusing to answer a specific question from John Adams about Leach pursuit.

It was a stupid question that didn't deserve an answer. Everyone wanted Currie gone - interviewing Leach wasn't going to salvage his job - she did the right thing by not answering that tool's question.

John Adams will always be a troll...

Didn't see it ....

"She's come to understand the love for Tennessee athletics"

Can you elaborate? She didn't understand that previously? Heck, that may be part of the problem!

What she means is "Dear Lord I need my job. Please don't fire me!"

She knows people are pissed and millions of dollars are on the line. She also knows if she's out she may never find work again after this S show.

She had (and still probably has) no real idea how big of a deal football is at Tennessee, or in SEC country generally.

I think she knows it's a big thing. I just don't think she knows how big.

If she doesn't know now, after having to fire a guy making 900,000$ a year, I don't think her time in academia has served her well.

We’re the laughing stock of the sports world at the moment and still have no coach. Sir, I’m not seeing how this is the greatest day since the national championship.

We're about to show the world what happens when you f%$& with Tennessee.

I want to bite Nick Sabans ear off right now!!!!!!!!

Go vols!

Because this is the first leg up from the absolute bottom of the abyss the UT football program has been in since 2005.

Wow. Davenport is having trouble getting this out. Pretty emotional.

She isn't emotional, she is clueless. useless.. one of the worst press confrence's ever seen. Reminds me of currie, neither one knows what it takes to get UT back on top. Only reason ahe brought fulmer back was because the heat was turned up to HIGH about currie. Now that fulmer is AD she needs to GO.

Yeah, there was very little she could say that wouldn't have made everything way worse, so she had no choice but to give non-answers or deflections. But there are people who are really good at doing that and she ain't one of them.

Of course, she very well may have been hampered and distracted by her struggle to suppress an enormous urge to vomit all over the table. At least that's what appeared to be going on.
