I question the playcall more than the QB mechanics. Constant rushed up the middle when it's clearly not working, multiple screens for no gain or a loss, and the fear of throwing it more than 10 yards downfield? I just don't like it. I'm not a nut-job fan who thinks we can throw it deep every play and have 500+ yards of total offense every quarter, but why keep the playcall so conservative? Use the downfield pass to set up the run, but not up the middle every time. I just want to see more production.
I don't have a clue if it is Dobbs, coaches, or the line that keeps us from opening it up. I found this interesting breakdown of Dobbs passing from last year:
I don't know if the downfield stats are comparable to other qbs or not. Most of these throws were against the weaker part of our schedule in '14. I would assume that making longer throws likely means you have the time to let a play develop as well (Oline protection on those). Does anyone have these same stats for '15?
behind the line: 95.7% completion
0-5 yards: 69%
5-10 yards 53.3%
10-15 yards 54.2%
15-20 yards 42.1%
20+ yards: 35%
I am really curious to know why since everyone here knows the game of football better than our coaches why are they not coaching a major SEC program or running the AD office some where? With all the knowledge people on here have its extremely surprising.
With all the talent we have on offense, why is DeBord not taking full advantage? I get so tired of seeing us being overly conservative on Offense. I'm not here calling for his job or anything, but when will we open it up more? We should have beat OU, but defense slacked off and our offense seemed to be content being conservative and not putting more pressure on the downfield passing game. Hurd and Kamara are capable of keeping drives going, but why not use Dobbs the way we did at the end of last season? I'm just not too happy with our production. Thoughts?
All of this drama regarding our offense is overblown and mostly based on ONE bad half. We kept things vanilla against BG and WCU and still had mostly success, with a few minor and meaningless hiccups. And we played a solid 1st half offensively against OU. Was the 2nd half poor, and the coaching strategy questionable? Yes. Along with most of you, I think Butch and Debord probably should have taken more risks down the stretch. But the players didn't execute either. OL stopped blocking anyone, Ellis likely cost us points with a dropped pass, VP fell down on a reverse that may have been a big gain, Medley shanked a FG. And like I said before, it's Still. Just. One. Half. Our offense is FAR from screwed. This week should tell us a lot more.
We were up 14 going into the 4th quarter. We missed a field goal earlier that should have won the game. I can't fault our offense or play calls at that point, we did what a coaching textbook said we should have done to that point in the game.Ok. Well alot of the OU game was inaccurate throws and dropped passes.
The problems with our offense happened long before Debord flew into town. It was mentioned that Bajakian left because he wanted to change some things but Butch stamped out the idea. Not sure if there is any truth to that. I have little football IQ, but it seems to me that Butch Jones wants the team to conform to his system instead of molding the system to strengths of the players that he has in his stable.
Part of what coaching is and means is feeling the flow of the game and adjusting for it. We had a 14 point lead going into the 4th quarter. Clearly what we had been doing offensively had been shut down throughout the 3rd quarter. Entering the 4th quarter we should have made adjustments and gotten more aggressive offensively. This is where I fault DeBord and CBJ as strategically, they decided to put the game in our defense's hands. OU did not beat us in regulation, so offensively we did not lose the game in regulation. It was a mistake strategically and it ultimately cost us the game in overtime.
