Not happy with DeBord.

I am really curious to know why since everyone here knows the game of football better than our coaches why are they not coaching a major SEC program or running the AD office some where? With all the knowledge people on here have its extremely surprising.

I get tired of this lame argument.

Has anybody else noticed that when Dobbs does try to push the ball downfield he seems to look more for Malone than any other receiver? Malone has had quite a few drops this year as well. There were times when I see North/Pig/Pearson open, but Dobbs is locked on Malone.

Also, I noticed we kept similar route groupings together when Dormady came in the game on Saturday, and Dormady let a couple of balls fly and let PW make a couple of plays. This leads me to believe that either Dobbs is not making that read in the game or he is being coached to "manage" the game in an effort to limit turnovers. I will say that I was expecting Dobbs to come out launching the ball downfield against WC, and he made some nice throws during the game. However the fact that Dormady made the connection with PW on the 49 yrd pass and Dobbs did not make that connection with Malone or North surprised me. I don't expect to see Dobbs making those types of throws on Saturday. The coaching staff and Dobbs have time to correct that this year, but I don't see it happening with this Oline.

I question the playcall more than the QB mechanics. Constant rushed up the middle when it's clearly not working, multiple screens for no gain or a loss, and the fear of throwing it more than 10 yards downfield? I just don't like it. I'm not a nut-job fan who thinks we can throw it deep every play and have 500+ yards of total offense every quarter, but why keep the playcall so conservative? Use the downfield pass to set up the run, but not up the middle every time. I just want to see more production.

Totally agree, play calling has to be better against florida. NO Vanilla play. Run the score up and don't stop...

I don't have a clue if it is Dobbs, coaches, or the line that keeps us from opening it up. I found this interesting breakdown of Dobbs passing from last year:

I don't know if the downfield stats are comparable to other qbs or not. Most of these throws were against the weaker part of our schedule in '14. I would assume that making longer throws likely means you have the time to let a play develop as well (Oline protection on those). Does anyone have these same stats for '15?

behind the line: 95.7% completion
0-5 yards: 69%
5-10 yards 53.3%
10-15 yards 54.2%
15-20 yards 42.1%
20+ yards: 35%

To give it some context here is a link to college qb's from 2012. The numbers don't break it down completely but Dobbs looks to be about as accurate downfield as Tyler Bray (who wasn't high on the list) and less accurate than Aaron Murray or Conner Shaw. Aaron Murray ranged from 60% at 20-25yds to 28% at 35-40yds. Again, I am eyeballing it, but his downfield numbers look a lot like Taj Boyd.

Excellent point. The Mods have all met, and we have decided to just shut this thing down.

It's been a lot of fun, folks! I hope that you will all look back fondly on the days when we used to discuss football online. I know I will.

Pile on DeBord all you want but it's Butch's offense and we're seeing the same symptoms we did with Bajakian last year.

Exactly. The offense has looked identical the past three years. DeBord is running Butch's offense and likely calling the plays Butch wants him to.

We've got a lot of skill talent, and so we'll see if we can make some big plays going forward. There are some issues: the line isn't great, to say the least; I was disappointed in the play-calling against ou--I think Debord got schooled by the ou defensive coordinator in that game as we could find nothing to counter the blitzes; and I think some of our receivers and Dobbs are still raw and making mistakes. That has to change, as most of them are fairly experienced by now. We've got to make some big plays--and we may have to come out throwing rather than trying to run Hurd up the gut, as that may not work.

With all the talent we have on offense, why is DeBord not taking full advantage? I get so tired of seeing us being overly conservative on Offense. I'm not here calling for his job or anything, but when will we open it up more? We should have beat OU, but defense slacked off and our offense seemed to be content being conservative and not putting more pressure on the downfield passing game. Hurd and Kamara are capable of keeping drives going, but why not use Dobbs the way we did at the end of last season? I'm just not too happy with our production. Thoughts?

Agree, Dresden. It is puzzling why we stuck to the play-calling against OU. There is more than one way to attack a fast- blitzing, hard rush off the edge style of defense. I'm sure DeBord is well aware, but, our offense took on a "deer in the headlights" appearance in the 2nd half. Oh, well, let's hope we see something different in the Swamp. GO VOLS!!!

All of this drama regarding our offense is overblown and mostly based on ONE bad half. We kept things vanilla against BG and WCU and still had mostly success, with a few minor and meaningless hiccups. And we played a solid 1st half offensively against OU. Was the 2nd half poor, and the coaching strategy questionable? Yes. Along with most of you, I think Butch and Debord probably should have taken more risks down the stretch. But the players didn't execute either. OL stopped blocking anyone, Ellis likely cost us points with a dropped pass, VP fell down on a reverse that may have been a big gain, Medley shanked a FG. And like I said before, it's Still. Just. One. Half. Our offense is FAR from screwed. This week should tell us a lot more.

Amen, GB. This week should speak volumes about where our program really is.

Ok. Well alot of the OU game was inaccurate throws and dropped passes.
We were up 14 going into the 4th quarter. We missed a field goal earlier that should have won the game. I can't fault our offense or play calls at that point, we did what a coaching textbook said we should have done to that point in the game.

How can you even blame DeBord at this point? We run the same offense we did with Bajakian. The OU game was a mirror image of '14 Florida. DeBord is simply a yes man that was hired out of retirement.

This same staff had poor Justin Worley running this same offense. No compromise, no sign of adapting scheme to personnel, no adjustments.

The problems with our offense happened long before Debord flew into town. It was mentioned that Bajakian left because he wanted to change some things but Butch stamped out the idea. Not sure if there is any truth to that. I have little football IQ, but it seems to me that Butch Jones wants the team to conform to his system instead of molding the system to strengths of the players that he has in his stable.

The coaches have to call the play and someone has to be open????

Exactly. What are forums for?

Part of what coaching is and means is feeling the flow of the game and adjusting for it. We had a 14 point lead going into the 4th quarter. Clearly what we had been doing offensively had been shut down throughout the 3rd quarter. Entering the 4th quarter we should have made adjustments and gotten more aggressive offensively. This is where I fault DeBord and CBJ as strategically, they decided to put the game in our defense's hands. OU did not beat us in regulation, so offensively we did not lose the game in regulation. It was a mistake strategically and it ultimately cost us the game in overtime.

New guy calling plays, but still same results as last year. Butch needs to hire an offensive guru and just get out of the way of the offense. Its kinda like Fulmer hiring new guys and not letting them do what they want.

You couldn't be more incorrect in your assessment. But, I'll bite for the sake of discussion. How should they have gotten more aggressive offensively?

Why make stupid/arrogant comments like this. It is a fan board where fans vent their stuff, share ideas etc. He is not claiming to be an expert but stating that he is not happy with DeBord's playcalling. ...

What's stupid is calling for a coach's head after a 2ot loss.

Maybe by not handing off to Hurd up the middle for no gain on every 1st and 10 in the 3rd and 4th quarters?
