Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2025-26

I actually thought Kentucky players too often looked kinda lackadaisical. Even though our Lady Vols sometimes stand around too much, compared to what I saw out of UK last night our team looked much more active off the ball.

Granted, I was only half paying attention, but every time I focused on the game I saw the same thing. There didn’t appear to be as much movement OR excitement in their game. It made me wonder if the players were enjoying the game at all.

All this then made me wonder how much (if at all) the team dynamic has changed since Matthew Mitchell retired. He was always a fun coach, and the players always seemed to be comfortable having fun around him. Something tells me Kyra isn’t quite as natually silly and fun-loving as Matt. From what I gathered, the main reason Kyra and Holly parted ways was because they disagreed pretty strongly in matters of discipline. Holly was, of course, a pushover, and Kyra was too much of a hard-@ss for Holly’s taste.

It’ll be interesting to see how this UK program progresses in the next three years under Elzy. I want her to be successful except against Tennessee. Bu then, there are so many former Lady Vols coaching now that if they’re all highly successful it’s going to be that much harder for Tennessee to get back to prominence.

Louisville had a 23 day layoff and they are playing like it against a cupcake......someone forgot to take the lids off the rims at the KFC Yum Center today

That’s good to know. Like I said, I wasn’t watching closely, and I obviously just so happened to catch them at the wrong times.

Other than Treasure Hunt, who finds herself buried at the end of the bench with Erin Toller and Emma King (in Treasure's defense, her default expression is "constipated", so I could be reading too much into this)...Kentucky looked like they were fired up and enjoying themselves. And why not? They played a helluva game, shot 50% from the floor and downtown, and shut down the highest scoring offense in the SEC en route to a top 10 win.

Duke women's basketball -- Many questions remain after Blue Devils cancel season

The Duke women's basketball team announced on Dec. 25 that it was canceling the rest of its 2020-21 season because of COVID-19 concerns. But questions remain about how the program made that decision and what's next for it and its players, especially since neither first year coach Kara Lawson nor anyone from the athletic department has publicly addressed the decision.

The Blue Devils are the only Power 5 team in men's or women's basketball to end their season early. All Ivy League schools and some smaller conference programs opted to not have basketball seasons at all.

The Duke women, who have played in 23 of the past 25 NCAA tournaments, finish the season at 3-1. Having lost top players Haley Gorecki and Leaonna Odom from the 2019-20 team, Duke's expectations for this season were not high. Still, there was excitement about a new coach and era starting in Durham, North Carolina.

The only public comment from Duke came in a news release Friday from the school's chief communications officer, Michael Schoenfeld, who said the choice was made by the players.

Duke hasn't granted interview requests with players, but senior Jade Williams has made multiple posts on Twitter since the Blue Devils canceled the remainder of the season.

"Our health and safety is our #1 priority," Williams wrote when posting Duke's announcement on Dec. 25.

The next day, she tweeted, "There are more than enough resources to make sure all competing teams are getting tested EVERYDAY. If you want entertainment, then make the playing fields, courts, etc safe!"

Later on Dec. 26, Williams reiterated it was the Duke players' decision to cancel the season.

"I'm amazed at people," she said in a Twitter post. "To clarify.. we together as a team, decided to opt out of our season. We are in a pandemic STILL because not enough people are taking it serious. Basketball players are not just entertainment. There shouldn't be casual attitudes about COVID now a year in."

Texas A&M coach Gary Blair said his players have told him they really want to play.

"I think it would hurt them more mentally by not playing," Blair said. "So we have to find a way, as long as it does not endanger the health and safety of our student-athletes."

Seeing Massengill with a mask, I wonder how many players nationwide are playing with a mask.

Jackson’s length is impressive for MS.

MSST state looks very beatable. Their offense in particular is nowhere near as good as it was under Schaefer. They aren’t getting as many points off turnovers as they have in recent memory. Texas has picked that right up where they left off. Definitely characteristic of his teams. That said, Jackson has been the best player on the floor tonight.

Kentucky does have more to offer this season. However, Howard is allowing herself to be defended tonight. Not sure why but she doesn’t want the ball like she did last season. Even with more options they still need her to be their leader.
