no coach will accept the job and recruiting will be impossible now

I'm utterly convinced at this point that vols1707 is Schiano himself, Schiano's agent, a family member, or a Currie/Haslam mole. I don't see how one could so vehemently defend a +1 win over .500 guy this much.

You are correct about his coaching record and for anybody to say he knew nothing about what went on at Penn St is either ignorant or has their head stuck down in a hole in the ground. The real fans of UT did the correct thing yesterday and stopped this hire of a bad person and a candidate. ALL of this falls back upon the Haslams and their choke hold on the athletic department.

what ignorant uninformed Tennessee fans did yesterday not only made it impossible for Tennessee to hire a quality HC....

The way the fan base turned based on second hand hearsay!!! No coach will touch the job that will have any proven quality. TENNESSEE FANS PROVED HOW IGNORANT THEY ARE YESTERDAY AND NO COACH WANTS THAT HEADACHE OF A IGNORANT UNINFORMED CRAZY FANBASE.

And if that's not bad enough THOUSANDS of articles are going to be written about how stupid, ignorant, and inability to comprehend what they read. THAT WILL BE USED AGAINST Tennessee

SO NOW YOU IGNORANT PEOPLE HAVE NOT ONLY MADE IT WHERE NO COACH WILL TOUCH THIS PROGRAM

THERE WILL NOT BE ONE QUALITY RECRUIT TOUCH IT EITHER.

Backlash spurs Tennessee to renege on offer to Greg Schiano

This is one of thousands of articles that will keep every quality coach or recruit away from Tennessee for YEARS..... idiots

No. You didn't. But, you are apparently an adult who seems to know how to discuss differing opinions.

I did actually because you claimed there were facts proven his innocence. Then you just responded saying "see there were no facts".

If there was proof he was innocent (there's not) no one would object. But this is too serious of a matter to hire him otherwise

Apparently you have more wisdom and insight than many Tennessee elected representatives, business owners, community leaders, and thousands of fans that love our university. Hey pal, this was not the loud minority, IT WAS THE MAJORITY! You are not all knowing.

You don't think Schiano is a good coach?????

Wait till you see what Tennessee has to get!!!

Because now due to IGNORANT EAST TENNESSEE HICKS

NO COACH OR AGENT WILL TOUCH TENNESSEE AFTER THE WAY THE IGNORANT FANS REACTED TO THIS.

Oh please...that is just pure bullcrap. We dodged a dang bullet with another crappy coach who had issues and baggage. You can call us "ignorant hicks and fans" if it helps you cope, but your butthurt post is all of that and more.

Sad.

So, you think we will get a quality coach now? Do you think a quality coach or top notch recruits are going to risk this? Good luck. I hope we get someone and not lose the recruiting class. Prospects are not good.

So we should hire a pedophile enabling low-life so that top notch recruits won't think bad of us? Makes sense...

Just wait and watch.....

If you didn't like Schiano because you are ignorant and can't read... ok can't help you... you're just that dumb

If you think Schiano is just not good enough of a coach.... ok just wait to see what Tennessee can get now
Tennessee has SUCKED for 15 years .... there was no "home run" willing to take the job PERIOD

Now doubtful even Kiffin would take this job. Because NOW HE CANT RECRUIT TO THIS MOUNTAIN MENTALITY BACKWOODS CULT FANBASE.

The players needed to win in the SEC are not living in Tennessee......

Ignoring the "Penn State scandal" aspect of this, Schiano has shown himself to be a bad person plenty of other ways. Feel free to google, there are tons of articles about how poorly he treated people, and I don't buy the "I've changed" BS.
He is also not very good of a coach. He had 1 good season (thanks to Ray Rice), and a few decent ones. He still never won the conference and was only able to get into the top 25 rankings 1 year of the 11 years he spent at Rutgers. In fact, his first 5 years there, he was 19 - 39. He has 1 win vs teams that finished in the top 25 (caught Louisville the week after they upset West Virginia). His schedule never had a SOS over 50. Against non-conference teams from BCS conferences Schiano went 10-12, five of which came in Bowl games in which he was favored (and all of which were low tier bowls). Please point out the impressive parts?

Do you think we need a "builder" before we can get a coach that takes to a SEC Championship?

I am not disagreeing with you, just interested in your opinion.

I thought Butch was the builder and the new coach was suppose to top it off, I jus disagree it being GS

You may be correct, however, what makes the Haslams any less desirable than what you find at other college football programs?

Because they wield more influence. Everyone still remembers them pushing Fulmer out. He was well respected around the country.

They all know that they tried to dictate Cutcliffes staff. The Haslams were probably behind Bajakian leaving, Janzcek (sic) leaving, etc. At least that is the perception.

The reason Belichick left the jets and went to the patriots was about control. Coaches want that control.

Tennessee now has a reputation that the coach does not have control. The Haslams do.

I fear fans double up, meaning they find someone else not named Gruden and fans do a repeat of this. We'll see, but yeah, there is a black eye for a bit... but time will heal the wound. I feel bad.
I believe we accept a decent coach not connected to a sex scandal. This attempted hire was tone deaf and blind to history and whats going on presently. I can't understand Currie pulling such a move.

I thought that was the plan too. It seems we were headed in that direction but then faded.

I don't think Schiano would be the coach to take the program to the SEC Championship.

I wonder if the next coach will be that coach.

There is a lot of speculation in your post, and that is ok, but I can just as well speculate that the Haslam's influence is similar to the influence major contributors have in other programs.

One thing that seems less speculative is that UT would miss the Haslam's money if they withdrew their support. Also, it seems reasonable to assume the family with the next big check would expect a similar level of control.

A few assumptions in the paragraph above is that the Haslam's would pull their support, there is a way to replace their monetary contribution, the next big check comes from someone wanting equal influence. Any of these could be correct or incorrect.

It can sound good and feel good to demand a cleansing of all things Haslam, but there are considerable risks involved.

So, facts proving innocence is different than facts proving guilt. It is also factual there were no facts to prove him guilty. Isn't the definition "innocent until proven guilty". Yet, most are saying we know he knew, we just can't prove it, so we are against him based on dis-proven character flaws in the PSU situation. I'm not saying he should or shouldn't have been hired as the right coach. I'm just saying the backlash seems hypocritical since it wasn't proven he covered up any wrong doing. That accusation held so little water in fact, that the DA didn't bother calling him to testify. I'm just saying there is a double standard here. Not arguing he should or shouldn't be the coach.

I was neither exited about the hire, nor disappointed with the outcome job wise. I had no interest in him as a coach either way. I'm just baffled by the personal reasons, verses professional, when the personal reasons seem to have no weight.

There is risk, no doubt about it. But the Haslams have proven they are incompetent where Football is concerned. They now have the Browns to play with, can't it be enough for them to make them even worse (who knew that was possible)?

Haslam was the driving force behind everything that has happened this century with Tennessee football. While you and both agree it's debatable, it really is acknowledged openly by most of the media and administration.

UT would miss their money. But that can be offset. In the new digital age, we are seeing crowd sourcing as a new viable means of funding that used to be the sole area of the Large Investor or Venture Capitalist. This could be used to offset some of that. Also, other contributors would most likely step up and make up the difference.

One thing most forget about business is that you have to have a product. And there has to be demand for that product. So why would the Company seek to actively alienate that customer base by destroying the product? I refer you to New Coke as just one example.

At the end of the day, the fan base gives more money than the Haslams. They buy merchandise, they but tickets, they watch TV. This allows the Univeristy to make more money per year than the Haslams give. Why let the Haslams destroy that with bad decisions?

Haslam's own the Browns and they are winless. Great business guys. Suck at running at football team. Wonder why UT football sucks.

Innocent until proven guilty is for the courts. Hiring him isn't a legal issue. He has serious allegations against him and we don't know for a fact he's innocent. To hire him would've been a very poor decision.

No one wanting to hire Schiano would've wanted to keep AJ Johnson. What's different?

The question is why would Schiano want the job after the fan reaction to his I don’t recall there ever being protests over a coaching hire.

I think they should have postponed the announcement to let the AD do damage control before terminating the MOU.

They could have asked Manning to vouch for the guy if the rumors are true that he supported the hire. They could have explained the vetting process and so on.

Bottom line is Currie or Haslam do not have their finger on the pulse of the fan base and made a terrible decision.

Everyone would support an up and coming coach if the top candidates all said no.

Schiano may be a good coach but Tennessee football is in dire straits and needed a home run hire, not a guy with baggage.
