It's weird because they were never meant to be big or influential. A rebellion against mainstream turned into the mainstream. Crazy stuff.

Don't forget Grohl in this equation. One of the best drummers of our time...Who created a damn good band..

agree with in between. As I've stated before, I think Pearl Jam is far more influential to the music scene and it was just going to be a matter of time (and a short matter of time at that) before PJ overtook Nirvana as "the" grunge band. Cobain's death just let Nirvana go out at their peak and while many people mistakenly call them the originators of grunge, they were the ones that began making grunge mainstream so they'll always have that.

I'm personally thankful it turned out like it did (sad that Cobain died though) because I'd take the Foo Fighters over Nirvana every single day of the week and twice on Sundays and holidays.

I think Kris plays on a track on the new Foo record. IMO, saw Nirvana 3 times and Foos twice, Nirvana shows were better.

how dare you call the doors overrated.

Their sound is timeless and unique to this day.

If anything, they aren't given the respect they deserve or their rightful place in history because of the untimely death of JM.

I wasn't alive during Nirvana's heyday, so I don't really know. But I really enjoy their music, and they're one of my favorite bands.

Overrated IMO. The Doors not overrated by the way. It did kick off the grunge movement in the 90's, so it did change music. But I do not care for Nirvana

But it gave us Dave Groll and the Foo Fighters. I like the Foo Fighters

I'm definitely not just young and I definitely have a clue. The Foo Fighters are amazing and unlike most bands, their music just continues to get better. I definitely remember all about Nirvana and I really enjoy their music, but unquestionably I prefer what the Foo Fighters are able to do.

To each his own my friend. Other bands from that era I like better than Nirvana are Alice in chains, Stone Temple Piolets, Temple of the dog and sound garden. For Yankee vol

i do enjoy STP and Soundgarden immensely, but I can't put Temple of the Dog above Nirvana, even if they all but became Pearl Jam, my favorite band of all time. Never really been a AIC fan.

I'm not a big Pearl jam fan either. But I like them better than Nirvana.

not really. just called an opinion.

i'm a fan of both, and i probably enjoy listening to nirvana more so than the foo fighters, but i'll agree with the few in here that have already stated that nirvana is in between the "overrated" label and the "rightful place" one. the grunge music scene was probably going to happen regardless in the 90's. that being said, nirvana played still played a big role in it.

Nirvana was a great band IMO. Kurt Cobain was not the most talented guitarist, but he wrote great songs and had an awesome voice. Nirvana pretty much put the nail in the coffin of 80s hair metal, and any band that does that is okay in my book. I don't think Nirvana has aged as well as some other bands, but at that time and place, Nirvana was some of the best music round. Not as good as Alice in Chains, but good nonetheless and very influential. You wonna talk about overrated- talk about Pearl Jam.

You can not like Pearl Jam and that's fine, but to call them overrated after they've influenced bands ranging from Incubus and Maroon 5 to the Strokes and Silverchair, as well voted America's greatest rock band of all time by a USA Today's reader's poll and has outlasted it's grunge counterparts by almost a decade and half is just silly. Granted, some of their counterparts are now doing reunion tours, but Pearl Jam kept going. Their last album even topped the charts. It's hard to say with Nirvana because their career was cut so short, but Pearl Jam has obviously stood the test of time.

Jim Morrison was a drunk, rambling fool with great hair, a pretty face, and a sultry voice. He was the perfect individual in the perfect time for a band like The Doors. However, he was who brought the band down as fast as they rose up. They were a decent, timeless band, but Jim's death immortalized them.

Same goes for Nirvana, except my opinion of Kurt is higher than that of Morrison's. Kurt was not a great singer, lyricist, or guitarist. He was just the perfect pop grunge frontman. Nirvana's material is really good if that's your shtick, but they will never rank among the top 100 for me.

I listen to Nirvana regularly, but I'd much rather have some Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, STP, Soundgarden, PJ Harvey, and Alice in Chains (pre-DuVall era, of course).

Good post about the Doors.
