Nintendo New 3DS and PS Vita

I'm telling you, call me nuts but I fully believe that the next system Nintendo releases will be an attempt to combine their console and handheld markets into one market. It's been rumored that the working title of the system that's in development is called "Fusion" and I believe it's a way of "fusing" console and handheld together into one system.

I think it will be a powerful handheld (roughly PS4 type performance) that will be able to somehow communicate with our TV's to allow us to play our games either on the big screen or on the handheld screen and the unit itself will serve as the controller (I think the updated 3DS with the 2nd analogue button and 4 shoulder buttons is a precurser to this).

I could definitely see Nintendo trying some crazy innovative thing like that with their next system. I'm cool with it as long as they drop the gimmicky motion features from the last few consoles - give me a controller.

Outside of their handhelds, I'm hesitant to do business with them until they meet some of my demands :p

1. Create an across-the-board Nintendo account similar to Xbox Live and PSN so that I don't have to rebuy games for each generation of consoles and handhelds, and implement cross-buy and play (Buying Castlevania for NES on my 3DS should mean I can download it on my Nintendo console too, IMO). This would also deter me from emulating classic games.

2. Upgrade graphics and UI. Although I'm from the generation that really doesn't care about graphics as long as the game is fun, I'm not paying a comparable price for an technologically inferior machine.

3. Achievements/Trophies! Microsoft brought the old school arcade high score to the modern era with Achievements. Sony followed up with Trophies. The XOne has created a leaderboard for basically every stat in their games so you can see what your friends have done. Achievements have added a whole other level of competition for my friends and I. We used to say we beat games or did difficult challenges, now we can prove it with achievements/trophies. This would be perfect with Nintendo's classic library of games.

4. Embrace online experiences. Couch co-op is great, but we are living in a different world than the 80s and 90s. I want to party chat with friends as we race for achievements/trohies in the Legend of Zelda for NES!

I agree with most of your points, though I couldn't care less about trophies/achievements. That whole virtual "atta boy" system doesn't interest me at all.

Party chat is a must! Though I understand what Nintendo is trying to do. They recognize their market is typically younger kids so they're trying to control the negative aspect of online chat to ensure young kids aren't exposed to all the online profanity and hatred that gets spewed. Still, sure they could come up with a solution to allow adults to chat while young kids wouldn't be exposed to it.

As far as graphics go, like I said if Nintendo would be able to pull off a 3DS-type design that works with my TV with PS4-level graphic capability at around 299.99, that would be more than fine with me. The functionality of having one unit that served as both home console and handheld would be more than worth the price IMO.

I guess the video game completionist in me wants my accomplishments archived. I also spent way too many quarters in the arcades getting on those high score lists (it was almost as important to me as the Frogger high score was to George on Seinfeld haha)

And yep, Nintendo has always considered themselves more of a toy maker and less of a video game maker so they'll likely always cater to children (even my 3ds told me to have my parents help me out when I set it up) At least they're remembering who got them to where they are with the release of so many classics.

So I went by my local Gamestop today and tried out their demo unit for the new 3DS. I gotta say I came away pretty impressed. They had Majoras Mask loaded in the system and I played it for a few minutes. The first thing that jumped out at me (no pun intended) was the 3D. The new 3DS handles the 3D much better than the old 3DS. For those who may have never tried out a 3DS, the 3D doesn't really jump out at you but rather it gives games an incredible sense of depth. The best comparison I can think of is the old View Masters and the depth it gave those images, only now in playable animated form. Also the 2nd "nub" worked great for rotating the camera. I think I'm going to pick one of these up along with Zelda Majoras Mask.

Nice. I'm debating it.

Check out Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate too. If you like the Souls series, it will be right up your alley.

Yeah Gamestop is selling a bundle right now for 288.99 where you get the red 3DS, Majoras Mask, Monster Hunter 4, and a Majoras Mask e-guide. I might take advantage of that.

Bought the black new 3ds, Zelda Majoras Mask, Zelda Link between Worlds, Mario Kart 7, and Monster Hunter 4. Then got home and downloaded Tecmo Bowl, Mike Tyson's Punchout(minus Mike Tyson), Metroid, and Super Mario 3.

The system is fantastic. The 3d looks great. It does add nice depth to the new games. The 4.99 retro games are a nice stroll down memory lane.

If you like ANY of the games I mentioned, you will want to pick this up.

Wow. Tecmo Bowl would be a blast. I had no idea you could play these retro games on 3DS.

Yep. SMB 1-3, Zelda 1&2, Castlevania 1-3, Punch Out, Tecmo Bowl, Mega Man. Mostly big NES and Game Boy games. No SNES or GBA games, unfortunately.
