I'm telling you, call me nuts but I fully believe that the next system Nintendo releases will be an attempt to combine their console and handheld markets into one market. It's been rumored that the working title of the system that's in development is called "Fusion" and I believe it's a way of "fusing" console and handheld together into one system.
I think it will be a powerful handheld (roughly PS4 type performance) that will be able to somehow communicate with our TV's to allow us to play our games either on the big screen or on the handheld screen and the unit itself will serve as the controller (I think the updated 3DS with the 2nd analogue button and 4 shoulder buttons is a precurser to this).
I could definitely see Nintendo trying some crazy innovative thing like that with their next system. I'm cool with it as long as they drop the gimmicky motion features from the last few consoles - give me a controller.
Outside of their handhelds, I'm hesitant to do business with them until they meet some of my demands
1. Create an across-the-board Nintendo account similar to Xbox Live and PSN so that I don't have to rebuy games for each generation of consoles and handhelds, and implement cross-buy and play (Buying Castlevania for NES on my 3DS should mean I can download it on my Nintendo console too, IMO). This would also deter me from emulating classic games.
2. Upgrade graphics and UI. Although I'm from the generation that really doesn't care about graphics as long as the game is fun, I'm not paying a comparable price for an technologically inferior machine.
3. Achievements/Trophies! Microsoft brought the old school arcade high score to the modern era with Achievements. Sony followed up with Trophies. The XOne has created a leaderboard for basically every stat in their games so you can see what your friends have done. Achievements have added a whole other level of competition for my friends and I. We used to say we beat games or did difficult challenges, now we can prove it with achievements/trophies. This would be perfect with Nintendo's classic library of games.
4. Embrace online experiences. Couch co-op is great, but we are living in a different world than the 80s and 90s. I want to party chat with friends as we race for achievements/trohies in the Legend of Zelda for NES!
