Nico Iamaleava is reportedly set to receive a $1.5 million deal from UCLA. However, this deal is likely to be significantly reduced by California taxes, potentially bringing the take-home amount to around $800,000. This is significantly less than the $4 million he was reportedly seeking from Tennessee.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Initial Rumored Deal:
Front Office Sports reported Iamaleava was looking at a $1.5 million deal with UCLA.

  • Potential After Taxes:
The US Sun estimated that after California taxes, Iamaleava's take-home pay could be closer to $800,000.

  • Tennessee NIL Deal:
Iamaleava was reportedly set to receive around $2 million annually in NIL payments from Tennessee before transferring.

  • Initial Demand:
Iamaleava was reportedly asking for around $4 million, which is considered to be near the top of the quarterback market.

  • UCLA's Offer:
NBC News stated that UCLA's offer was "not remotely close" to his $4 million target.

I agree with that, too. Or he starts early and gets benched.
He won't be a NFL QB. But he can use the team around him excuse when he transfers at the end of the year with 2 years of eligibility. My reason for NFL is he is not a leader and that's going to hurt him even if he improves at playing.

His dad has certainly stunted his maturation process, and in turn, precluded him from having the necessary leadership traits for the position (as you point out).

Nico appears to have the maturity of a 15-year-old. If that.

Only if he plays. It's very possible he doesn't even win the starting role.
.....and this has been my suspicion. That he felt like his starting role at UT might be in jeopardy considering his slow progress and 2 nipping at his heels not to mention the 5* coming in January for '26 season. I think he felt the pressure and asked for more money than initially agreed to "get it while it's good". I also think CJH had a gut feeling about his ability / upward trajectory and balked at the $4M demand. There are others out there worth it, but he isn't. If his performance would have been close to others in this stratosphere, UT would have paid it. But business people being who they are, did some analysis and figured he wasn't a good investment.

I think there could be a lot of truth in here.

All Nico has right now is potential. Because if you look at the hard numbers against good to better competition so far, they are mediocre at best. I would love to know CJH’s true thoughts after spring practice…but I doubt we ever will.

In 14 starts, he failed to hit the 200-yard mark in 9 of them.

In 8 SEC starts, he only had 9 TD passes…and 4 came against Vandy.

In short, our coaching staff worked a miracle to go 10-2 in the regular season.

I have to wonder if Nico thought that competition here at UT would expose him and his Dad hit the panic button. Thought this when the spring had concluded and he was not showing up.

This happening is one of the guardrails needed and a market correction for the sport. Nico has damaged not only his own prospects, but the prospects of anyone else who may try and pull a power play like this.

He’ll end up netting around half of what he woulda netted from Tennessee.

Cal state tax is in the ballpark of 15%.
Likely a LA city tax, too.
Federal taxes are essentially a wash.

All of this to play for a lesser team in a lesser college football market.

Iamamoron
Not to mention that Los Angeles, beyond the state income tax, is usually calculated as being 75-100 percent more expensive to live (depending on source and how you spend your money), which means that Nico and his family needed to make at least 4-4.25 million to have the same purchasing power as living in Knoxville.

Oh it is much worse than that. He could have been developed here into an NFL qb. Maybe not a program qb but he could have made a roster...possibly a backup. He will have little time to learn the playbook, he has a much lower caliber wr's and oline around him. Lower caliber coaches. I just don't see him getting drafted at all now.
