I heard the horse fell to often. Dangerous for expensive animals. Remember when Texas Tech horse ran into the wall and died right there? Had to drag it off to horror of kids in stands.

Am I a terrible person for finding that comment to be hilarious!?

Yes, forget the horse!

When I was young the horse was just as much part of the tradition that made TN. If people are so concerned that the horse could die, that is pathetic. The Walking Horse will always mean something special to me and I could care less about the sensitive people whining about how the Horse is trained. There are plenty of trainers today who do not train the horses the way that has been outlawed. A Walking Horse to me represents Power and Perfection much like the way we want our football team to perform.

Don't they still break out the horse for homecoming? I haven't been to a homecoming game in years.

Yes but I would prefer it to be at every game, I know its not that popular for some folks but for the older Vols it has a different meaning.

G - when we were young and they had the walking horse at every game, the stadium was different. We had that state-of-the-art Tartan turf which was much more durable. Others have pointed out that now with the grass those horses do some serious damage putting ruts up to 4 inches deep. I'd love to see the horses every week too but my guess is the cost of repair to the grass far outweighs the benefit of a horse going around the field for about 3 minutes

What is with all the nickname threads on here lately?

Why does everyone and everything need a nickname?

Here's a good one. Neyland F'ing Stadium. There I nicknamed it for ya!

I get the whole bit about the horse wreaking havoc on the field, no one wants that. We could always make a track out of sand behind the UT bench for the horse to run down at the start of each game and then the grounds crew could just rake the sand smooth. Too many teams use big animals as part of their tradition and figure out a way to make it happen. (FSU, Oklahoma with their wagon and Texas for example)
