Neyland I (Formerly known as Gruden Thread)

Hey, guys.

Just letting everyone know that I will be spending the next few months getting to know my Memphis Tigers. I plan on hanging around in this thread because of all the cool people here but as far as buying into this team goes, I am finished. I wish them well and hope that they find success. I will still casually follow them through this site and the bottom ticker on TV but the days of devoting my Fall Saturdays to their games are over. I'm not doing this simply because we didn't get Gruden. I am making this decision because of the total lack of commitment to winning by those in charge of running the show. They talk a good game and lead everyone on only to hand us the exact opposite.

I know, stfu, gtfo, and don't let the door hit you on the way out. That's okay. I understand but after 40 years of being a Vol fan and 10 years of feeling like they couldn't care less about competing for championships, I am done.

Completely understand man. I was brainwashed into TN football in the 90's by my parents so I'm stuck. Won't get behind this hire like I did the others but I will still watch and pay attention. Will be out of the country for at least a year so I guess this is as good of a time as any to distance myself. Hope this hire will work out but I doubt it. I'll still be here on volnation though, cheering my vols on.

Good morning all,
I just had to come in and say "Hey, and thanks for the ride for the past few weeks!"

You guys are great fun! I lurk alot, and enjoy you guys and gals spirit and insight. Plus y'all are all my kinda Vol Fans. RABID!:rock::rock:

Go Vols and Lady Vols!

I’m interested to see what recruits who de committed will come back. If Pruitt is able to flip them back that’s a good start

may have been answered but what offense will we be running and what kinda defense

Not sure about the schemes, but Pruitt is one helluva defensive coach, when he was at FSU I believe they were #1 in nation in defensive scoring and his 2 yrs at bama they were either #1 or top 3 in same stats (I'm reciting these from memory after reading stuff last night, I could be wrong).

I assume our offense is an open question until we know who OC will be.

Morning, All. Had to come check out the new digs. Like the idea of keeping the band together. Hope most have come around to the idea of our new coach...I'm not excited, but I think we did make an honest and thorough run at JG. The bright side to this is that we've thrown a wrench into Bama's org. Seems that most of them really like this guy and hate to lose him. So, there's that.

VFL to hire: Jay Graham. Top recruiter in the country. I don’t care about Gillespie at this point.

I want to see more than one VFL on the staff. Fulmer may have just sh!t in his hat.

With the way things turned out, I would have been happy with Leach and Currie. I mean that. I hope Fulmer is a really short term AD for us.

This is the Grudenites Anonymous meeting, right?

Hey everyone, my name's 16thStreetVol, and I'm a Grudenite -- and original Grudenite.

Good morning, everyone. Glad to have a new home for this wonderful community, and Neyland is a great name for it.

It appears we're about to have a new head coach. He's not a household name, at least not yet. He's not a "splash" hire. He's not an offensive genius. He's not a Vol for Life. In fact, he has exactly zero days of previous UT affiliation.

Got it.

So here's what I'm gonna do, the minute he is formally announced as our head coach: I'm gonna back him. 100%. He will be wearing orange, and trying to win championships while coaching our lads.

That's good enough for me. He has my full support.

We still have a few hours to get our thoughts out before that switch gets thrown, so I will totally understand if people use the time to air their frustrations with things that weren't, or might have been.

At the end of the day, though, you fight the battle you find yourself in, not the one you wish you had.

If you can't, you go find some other team to support, or give up football altogether. I understand. I don't agree, but do understand.

For me, I'm all Vol. For life. Hoping for great things with Coach Pruitt.

Go Vols!

Doug Matthews on Nash 104.5 yesterday said of the commits we already have he didn't think any of them were gonna leave. Mays it seems might be on his way back, I don't think he ever really was gonna leave he was just voicing his displeasure with all the sh!t that was going on.

I do have reservations about comparing this year to previous years where coaches coached through bowl or playoff games because the early signing date wasn't in effect then. I hope it doesn't disturb our incoming class much but guess we'll have to see.

Make no mistake this guy is a Bama guy thru and thru. We are merely a stepping stone and paycheck. He does not love Tennessee and my bet is he will not be humbled or find it an honor and privilege to lead our valued traditions like:

Reciting General Neyland’s Maxims
Leading the Team on the Vol Walk
Running Thru the T
Singing Rockytop
Touching the "I will give my all for Tennessee today" sign

This is a guy that bleeds crimson thru and thru. I do not like this hire.

Fulmer led us to believe that he was going to get a gut that loved UT. This isn't the guy.

Cutcliffe was a bammer before he got here and poured his soul into UT. You may try a more hopefully optimistic approach. It would make you outlook on things better.

Somebody help me out. If Pruitt has as much potential as I'm hearing from some people how come he was still available? Search and saw his name was mentioned w/ USCe and MissSu but didn't see anything else.

Not hating on him I just don't understand. BVS is a muther.

I know...because no one else wanted him and I am still not sure why Vols fans are acting like we just made a good hire. The reasons I have heard are: 1. He's a great recruiter...at Alabama, I would be a great recruiter.
2. He has great defenses...Saban has great defenses, Kirby Smart did just as well and Saban could put whoever in a DC and they will have a great defense.

Win, he has to win. I'm done automatically supporting these hires they trot out to the podium just because they changed their tie to an orange one.

Apparently let's just grit our teeth and bare it. I'm as frustrated as you are friend. I also really think Saban is behind those defenses. Not Kirby or Pruitt.

Was Cutcliffe ever our head coach?

Did we hire Cutcliffe from the outside for one of the top 3 positions first (HC, DC, OC)?

No.

Cut worked his way up through Tennessee's ranks for a DECADE before he took over as OC.

It's not the same. Not even close to being the same. Just like how Kirby Smart's situation isn't the same. "But he was uh coordeenatur and nevar a head coach!" Yea, and what record did Georgia have in the previous year? Previous 4 years? How many seniors did they have coming back this year?

We are a dumpster fire and needed someone with sitting head coach experience so they know what they're doing and how to manage a staff, and a big name to attract recruits. We got neither. Miles and Leach would have been better hires.

It took Tennessee 25 days to make this hire. Look at Texas A&M, FSU, Arkansas, Florida, I mean the list just goes on forever.

This isn't a Gruden thing. It isn't an anti-Pruitt thing. It's Tennessee being run like a joke for the last decade or more. And this hire is not a salve to any of it.

Yes, Saban is a big part of it I agree, but Pruitt had nation's #1 scoring defense when he was at FSU so he probably does know a littl D.

Let's hope that the news of him coaching the playoff will be more about supporting his current players rather than overall Alabama. I'll give him that. Not just bolting and leaving his players when they are still in it.

Charlie, I have been gritting my teeth for ten years now. I really thought and had high hopes that UT would go big and really try to right the ship, it didn't have to be Gruden but a big time splash hire.

Our team is as far down as I have seen since I have been a fan and I just don't see Pruitt being the guy to bring us out of this very deep hole. The splash was needed to get the recruits to take notice but we hired a project.
