Next gen console power (PS5 and Xbox Series X)

That really would make sense. They would get the games in the hands of more people that way too. I know I'd be much more likely to give the latest NBA game or multiplayer FPS a shot if I didn't have to pay $60 for it. I am a little worried the micro transactions are going to get out of control with this buisness model though.

That and my concern is how will this business model affect game development in the long run? By putting your games in a subscription service the same day they go on sale, you're essentially cannibalizing potential sales of those games by electing to let people play them behind a subscription. Is MS just going to continue to subsidize the potential loss in sales for these developers so they can stay profitable? Will it entice developers to cut their development budgets in order to see a higher return in profit? Will games in Gamepass ultimately just be a library of mediocre A and AA games?

I'm not sure, but Netflix's effect on the movie industry would probably be a predictor for it. Games as a service is probably the final coffin nail for the used market though.

Yes but even with Netflix, at least movies get their run in theaters and are sold physically for a time before they go to Netflix (the non Netflix-produced content). With the way MS is handling Game Pass, it would be the equivalent to Disney putting their next big blockbuster Marvel movie on Disney Plus the same day as it opens in theaters. I just don't know how sustainable that is without a huge drop off in production quality. Either that or we can expect subscription prices to go up dramatically at some point. Something at some point would have to give because I don't see how profitable Game Pass could possibly be for MS if they're having to constantly subsidize the potential loss in revenue from studios who put their games day and date on Game Pass.

Their first party stuff will hit Gamepass on day one. I don't think 3rd party titles are under any obligation to do that, or be on the subscription service at all. You'll still be buyng them up front.

AMD Ryzen Zen 3 desktop CPU's getting unveiled on October 8th. This last week of computer/gaming console information has been quite exciting. Now show me that 15% IPC increase over Zen 2!

No but the feedback from developers who have our their games on game pass has been really good. People end up buying the game, buying the dlc, and/or spending money on micro transactions. As game pass continues to grow the impact it has on the player base is potentially exponential.

It’s really the same as Netflix in that third party stuff goes to the theater first just like third party games are released full price initially. The netflix first party stuff is free, and that includes some blockbuster high profile content. It hasn’t affected their production quality.

The potential is there for sure. I wonder how long it takes Sony to follow suit? They already have PlayStation now, so it's not like they are starting from scratch.

We’ll see. Sony seems pretty confident in their current strategy since it dominated last gen. I don’t expect them to do anything. If they do, I think it means they have serious concerns. In my opinion I think the only way they do anything similar is if they see preorders/sales lacking. JMO.

We'll see, everything will change if Xbox builds a lead in their install base early.

Don't count on it. This poll was taken yesterday afternoon after the XSS news broke. This isnt the only one either. IGN ran a similar poll with similar results. PlayStation as a global brand is just too strong, too ubiquitous with gaming. Thats not to say Xbox won't be successful. They absolutely can be. But any delusions people may have of Xbox being the market leader need to be checked at the door. It ain't happening. Demand for PS5 is just too strong. Frankly I see no reason why Sony has to "respond" to anything MS does. They obviously have a winning formula and they're going to stick with it. Theyre going to stay more traditional, which is to stick with defined console generations and focus on new games (especially exclusives) that push the hardware. Meanwhile MS will continue to figure out their own niche in the industry with being more service oriented and PC-like by trying to blur the lines of console generations.

Especially since:

1) No good games that are reasons to must buy the console at launch (or at all for the foreseeable future)

2) All Xbox games will be made for both the XSX/S and the One generation (which in reality hurts the XSX consumer because the graphics and all have to be dumbed down in order to run them on the older gen hardware)

3) All of the MS exclusives will also be on PC

MS shoots themselves in the foot every time. They are just as bad as Google, they keep tripping themselves up.

Just one small correction. MS only committed to supporting the X1 for the next year or two. After that it will be just XSX and XSS support.

I think they'll make some inroads with this price point/structure. Especially amongst those who have never bought a console before and those who tend to stay a generation behind. I'll definitely but a PS5 at some point. But I may well get an xbox too, this go around. It will be cheaper than upgrading the gpu in my pc again.

I think Microsoft is looking several years down the road, perhaps even to the end of this upcoming console generation, and is trying to get out ahead of Sony there by not committing to console generations and having the Game Pass subscription.

And by that I mean they are looking towards a platform agnostic future where the "Xbox" brand is a library of games and maybe even a badge slapped on tablets, laptops, and even TVs that all have access to that library and are capable of playing those games via internal hardware.

Look at the success of the Switch and what it's capable of. That hardware is already super dated and it can play Witcher 3 and Doom. By the end of this upcoming generation, which could be 6-7 years from now, we will likely see huge leaps in mobile processing power, which will also be implemented in an array of electronic devices.

We probably won't be anywhere close to PS5 power in mobile phones by then, but things like DLSS and AI image enhancement will make it possible to run great looking games on mobile hardware (and also on a variety of other devices).

Now, I'm not saying this will be a winning strategy, because I don't know. But I think we are headed towards a day when pretty powerful GPUs are ubiquitous in virtually any device with a screen, and Microsoft could be the early adopter there of setting the standard of paying $10/month (or whatever the price point would be) and having access to a huge library of games on almost any device you own.

Todd Howard would move to the edge of his seat after reading this and realizing he could obtain his ultimate dream...to put Skyrim on everything.

Xbox is kinda killing it right now with the next gen
Have to see what Sony comes with but right now Xbox is doing what they need to. They will do well with this S version imo. Price drives a lot and this feels similar to the 360/PS3 cycle to me.

So, if all I want to play in multi-player shooters, which system would be best. I have not really fired up either my Xbox or PS 4 for a while now as the group of older players I played with kind of broke up and I don't really want to talk to 12 - 16 year old kids as that seems very creepy to me.

I was thinking about trading both of my systems in and was thinking of going with the Xbox as I bought the pro controller and I hate to not use it.

I just enjoy playing and can't say that I'm overly concerned with my stats or proving anything to anyone, just enjoyment and relaxation is all that I'm looking for.

Rumors of a 3rd Xbox console called the Series V. Would be essentially an all digital Series X....a step down from the series X but a step above the S. So I'm guessing it would probably be $399.
