I had had thoughts about them spreading that extra
1million out over the defensive coaching pool, one could take away from that that Monte would get it all.

Have we suddenly got a good defensive line for next year?

Good point. Great scheming can go a long way... but at some point (against top competition), you still need to have the horses.

Pray that D Williams comes back and avoids injury. Langley is coming along, but not sure he'll be an SEC ready starter next season. Maybe we can pick up a good JUCO DT.

Pretty funny reading the comments. It looks like those guys bicker more than we do.

This was in an article I was reading from the Citizen Tribune where they talked to players and got comments on their excitement of the new hire.

Kiffin may have revealed a lot about his plan for Tennessee football in Sunday’s team meeting, but one thing the Vols still don’t know is exactly who will be joining Kiffin on the sidelines next fall.

However, Gerald Williams was quick to point out that he and the defensive players are hopeful Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin joins his son on the Vols’ staff.

"Me, Eric Berry and Demetrice Morley were watching some of the Tampa Bay game (Sunday), and we were seeing how guys were flying around and making interceptions," Williams said.

"We were like ‘that’s what we are going to be doing next year.’ We are excited. (Monte Kiffin) is similar to Chief (former Vols defensive coordinator John Chavis). It will be good to get him in here."

I totally agree that Monte will be a great fit for us, He has alot of NFL experience; Chavis was probably the best overall def coord in the SEC over the last decade it is sad to see him go but i believe Tn fans are excited to see Monte coming to the HILL..But we still need some big guns up front on the def line, but i think things are heading in the right direction for our program

It's good that he has the player's support. Although it would kind of be stupid for any defense not to want him!

Hey guys. I am here in S.C and the Carolina fans that I work with are trying to piss in my cornflakes by telling me that Monte kiffin has been in the NFL to long and will not be able to defend the spread offense and that teams will still run over us. I keep telling them that I beieve that they have probably thought of that already in Knoxville.

Perhaps Monte's bored with shutting down copy cat NFL offenses and is itching for a new challenge to design a college defense that will stuff the spread option right down Urban's smarmy throat. He'll also be happy to remind Chow why he's a college OC again. He'll also be teaching young men who are eager to learn and who'll look up to him in awe versus multi-millionaire spoiled brats.

Yeah because I'm real sure that Monte is scared of college coordinators! :eek:k:

I love it that we're getting Monte K--but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that a pro coach will turn us into a defensive superpower. You will be disappointed. First, Chavis is/was a pretty damn good coach--we've had two great defenses in the last four or so years--2005, in particular. Second, talent does play a LARGE role, and so does having coaches who can develop and relate to college kids. Coaching veteran, 25-30 year old NFL players is far different than coaching 18-20 year olds who can be immature and not the brightest candles, to say the least. Look at Weis at ND--won four Super Bowls as OC for the NE Pats, supposed to be an offensive guru/genius. He's close to getting sacked after four years--and the nd offense was mediocre AT BEST this year. They didn't get a first down against So. Cal //until the third quarter//!!! And yea, unless we find another couple of DTs soon, our defense could struggle next year under Monte unless he's got a couple of brilliant fixes up his sleeve.

When did our defense ever really get run over?

Charlie Weiss wasn't the only coach with the Pats, and they've done pretty good without him too.

Its not, "OMG, we have Monte, we won't be scored on."

Its more like, "Holy crap, with the knowledge of Monte, combined with the enthusiasm of Orgeron, maybe Steele, our Defense will be feared again."

Combine that with a non-anemic offense and I like the way the future looks.
