UC Davis transfer TE announces commitment to Tennessee

UC Davis TE McCallan Castles
The buzz: McCallan Castles, a former four-star recruit who began his career at California, had 27 catches for 387 yards and four touchdowns last season for UC Davis, an FCS program. Former Boise State and Colorado coach Dan Hawkins is the UC Davis coach. At least some scouts view Castles (6-5, 245) as a potential Day 2 draft pick.
Unless there’s a medical redshirt possibility, he has exactly one season of eligibility.

So he's only got one year left?
Yes. Unless his redshirt season was due to medical concerns. Then he’d be eligible to petition for an extra year. Him being on NFL watch currently makes that seem unlikely/unnecessary.

Timeline still wouldn’t work. He either redshirted in 2018 or 2019, so one of those seasons counted against his eligibility. Skip 2020 for Covid. 2021 and 2022 would be seasons two and three.
Looks like a RS, plus he def had injury year 2. Plus free pass on covid season. Maybe he has two seasons left.

Re-read what I posted. Acknowledged either 2018 or 2019 were redshirt seasons. Even with an injury, that doesn’t automatically grant you a medical redshirt. Just allows you the option for PETITIONING for an additional season.

I've been pleased with our California transfers so far and I expect Castles to be in the same mold. Wasn't used much as a receiver in the past so he wanted to play somewhere where the TE could be targeted a bit more. He has plenty of game experience - can block, catch and run. Good addition. We'll have to see if he can throw like Fant...

Redshirt in 2018, not sure how 2019 is treated with him leaving program after 2 games. 2020 is covid year. Could he have 2 years?

Sophomore (2019)
• Made his first collegiate start in the season opener against UC Davis and also played at Washington in the second game of the campaign but did not have any statistics other than participation
• Left the program after two games
• Had two receptions for 25 yards in the spring game including the game's longest pass play of 23 yards on a pass from Chase Garbers

Freshman (2018)
• Earned the Dink Artal Award as the Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year
• Played in three games all off the bench but did not use a season of eligibility
• Recorded one catch for 15 yards against TCU in the Cheez-It Bowl
• Named a Cal Scout Team Player of the Week for his performances in practices leading up to a win over North Carolina
