New QB being Installed During Offweek

Our team is good. We are a good QB away like we’ve been saying the past 2 seasons. A good QB wins the GA State and BYU games, and instead of 8-5 we are 10-3. With Pruitt probably winning coach of the year. This year with a good QB we are probably just 3-2 honestly, but Alabama and Georgia would’ve been more competitive that’s for sure. With a good QB we probably only lose 3 games this year, and we go 7-3. Bad QB can make or break a team especially when he’s the only QB the coach is comfortable enough to send out there.

We are not a good team. Good teams don’t whiff on multiple blocks per game, be completely unable to defend a slant pass, generate zero pass rush, or safeties that can’t defend a pass play. There are so many flaws on this team it is hard to pinpoint which ones are the most pressing.

You are 1000% correct.

People who deny this have fallen into a pessimistic hole from all the trauma since 2007.

We obviously aren't perfect. We have problems. But JG has been a SERIOUS problem that almost no team can overcome.

If JG was playing for Bama and we had Mac Jones this past weekend, how does that game go? Think about it.

Is JG dropping dimes all over the place? He would do okay in a clean pocket with those receivers against our struggling secondary sure. Hes not having the same performance.

If Mac Jones is our QB, does Chaney and Pruitt believe in him and allow him to pass down the field more? Yes. Can he read defenses and anticipate throws? Yes. Is bammas defense that good? No. Did Tennessee run the ball well and protect the passer? Yes. Is Mac Jones really good when he has time? Absolutely. If JG hit Hyatt and Palmer deep a couple times for touchdowns how many times would Mac Jones do it?

Is that game 48-17 if you switch QB's?

Heck no. Take out that Gray fumble because it was on a third and 5 and he's not getting the ball there with Mac Jones under center.

So is it 41-17?

No way. We are scoring at least a couple more touchdowns. The game obviously gets a lot closer with the QB's switched.

Then imagine a close game and JG being a wild card with the ability to desemate his own team. Could easily throw a pick 6's or stupidly fumble at any point.

Saban would be aware of that so they probably have a much more conservative gameplan where they take more time off the clock, but are easier to stop with a more one dimensional offense. Just based off that the score is much closer.

Just imagine Dobbs or Bray out there even. It would mean we have a far far far closer game. Is Dobbs only scoring 17 against that defense? Or any decent QB? Almost any QB is better than JG so its a given you're not running the ball on third and 5. So it's no worse than 41-17 with anybody else. But most anyone else would put more points up for us.

Now if its a closer game that means their offense stays in gear and continues to score, but if UGA isn't stopping them then probably nobody else is.

We may not be a QB away from beating Bama and the elites, but we are good QB play away from being top 15 right now. Just like we were going into halftime at UGA when JG wasn't making huge mistakes and played decent.

It’s not irrelevant when we’re looking at issues the defense had long before alleged morale problems.
Freak - Remember the Georgia game in the second half, two quick turnovers by JG and the defense held them to 6 points total.

Tell me that doesn't have an effect on morale? They keep getting off the field and then the offense turns the ball over again again.

Then UK game happens and its the same thing. HT has not been playing with the fire he had to start the season. IMO, because he knows it doesn't matter how many tackles for loss or sacks the defense forces, the offense will not succeed with JG. JMO. GBO!

The defense has had a plethora of issues this year from day one. They've looked good in spurts, but have had problems with every position group that have been recognizable since South Carolina. Sure it's tough when things go poorly on offense, but do I believe guys like Henry T are taking plays off because they want to see Harrison Bailey out there? I don't, and I hope that's not the case.

There's no excuse for the quarterback play or the turnovers and I know that affects the mindset of the defense. That's not my point.

If guys will take plays off because of one player, then they'll take plays off because of any player. The good players don't take plays off.

The way I see it, there may be a bit of deflation mixed in with a whole lot of exhaustion from having to ball out and bail out a struggling offense. That plus their own issues on defense can make it seem like they're "done," when in reality they're just trying to keep their heads above water. Add in the fact that 2 of the teams were organized and disciplined programs and you get a recipe for looking like you quit - even if you haven't.

I agree, but I also think that if (when) we see a more productive offense, we will also see improved play by the defense. In this case, and at this stage of team development, I think the offense and defense have, do, and will feed off the play of the other side.

Hey, I made it past a UK loss without getting sent to my room again, so I'm on a roll here!

Go Vols.

Not sure if posted, but read this from Patrick Brown the other day.

They will focus on themselves this week before working on Arkansas. I would think Guarantano remains the QB moving forward. IMO their confidence in Shrout is kaput and not sure an extra week is all Bailey and Maurer need to be ready but we’ll see. Both will get lot of work this week.

And this about Shrout.

Turns out him winning the backup job might have had more to do with Bailey and Maurer missing time in the preseason than anything else, because when he got his chance he reverted back to his bad habits of not operating the offense right and forcing turnovers.

If Pruitt trots JG on the field for Arkansas, he should be fired on the spot and put Tee interim.

The entire country can see JG is a dog that can’t hunt.

I go back to GA game. Defense playing great, stops GA 3 times inside the 3 to end the half. Then JG turns it over 4 times.

I love the Vols, but I can’t watch anymore this season if JG plays.

I disagree and if they would have started maurer and opened the playbook up we actually had about 3 breaks that would have for sure made the game go into the 4th.
I think it woulda mattered in terms of showing any progress or national perception. I’d make them earn it. We didn’t even blitz 1 time in the first half. No shots in their soft secondary until too late. The Xs and Os still matter a little bit ...do you remember 2009 bama game we almost pulled off? Did you see the Ole Miss/Bama game a few weeks ago? Same if not more talent gap that came down to the wire
Yeah, well, Maurer was injured and under quarantine for a large part of the fall. He threw one INT for every 7 completitions last year. What in the Wide World of Sports makes you think he's better than JG? I think JG gives us the best chance of beating a mediocre opponent. I look for Bailey to take over the last 2 or 3 games of the season so we won't burn his redshirt.

Because in some future play or game you may be the doofus and that same QB could bail your sorry ass just like you did his when he messed up. That's basic psychology of any team sport. And our defensive players are certainly not superstar world beaters anyhow, not even when compared to our QB's (as we have seen vs Bama where they were the weakest link in the team).
The Qb has been the weakest link on this team for 3.5 years. More than double any other position group. JG is the weakest link of any position group for at least 35 years since I became a Vol fan.[/QUOTE]

At this point I really don't care if any of the other QB's aren't as good as JG. Just suit one them up and let him take the lead. I'm over the JG roller coaster. Either they move on from him or I move on to other fall Saturday activities and will check back in when his UT days are officially over. I have 0 confidence we can win when he is taking snaps. I watch knowing he will implode at any moment. Takes the fun out of it.

What's the definition of insanity again?

And what makes you think Bailey is better??? A sideline jumpball that JG throws in his sleep, overthrows in the EZ like JG or perhaps a clean pocket checkdown to the running back like JG???

BM is his 1 series got a 1st down running...scambled and completed a pass that last year he would have forced....it wasnt for alot of yards but it wasnt and tuneover or sack...so yeah he is better then JG.

Two of Maurers interceptions last year were tips. The one at Florida and the one against bammer where Japan got it ripped out if his hands.

For some reason Maurer is the only true freshman SEC QB that gets no excuse for throwing INT's. And they somehow totally outweigh all the good things he did last year, in the game last week and he then subsequently has not potential.

Anyone who thinks we need more JG needs a lobotomy.

A good QB make this a totally different team. Current there is no offense to even make another team panic or feel threatened. An offense that can put up points 30+ a game makes you a favorite in more games. Our defense is not bad it just needs help from our offense.

Do you realize that Maurers stats could very easily read the other way? Two of his picks hit HIS receivers in the chest, not the opponent. 1 was literally two plays later after landing on his head which was later revealed had left him concussed. There was only two ints last year that was all on him. The first one vs Miss St and the one vs UGA.

Yet youre clamoring for Bailey that very nearly threw a pick in only 4 attempts that ONLY hit the defender while complaining about Maurers td/int ratio? 🤦‍♂️.

Some people just amaze me with their logic.

Errybody has a preference and pretends this means that and that means this. Both getting a full chance on the field will be the only fair judgement. Hope that happens.

Even if that was true but if our coaches still think he is better than the other QB's we have right now (not in terms of potential but in terms of actually giving them best chance to win some more games this year) we have to assume there is a reason for this, correct? Can we at least agree they are not being unreasonably stubborn and willing to lose games because of JG? I dont think that's the case at all - I think they sincerely think he gives them the best chance to win right now (even if he just sort of manages the games without having to win them by amazing QB play - sort of as he managed the games during the winning streak we had going before the UGA game).
By the way while JG has certainly been a big dissapointment overall, I disagree he has always been the weakest link - just in this last game vs Bama our secondary was by far the weakest link.

Our whole team has suffered for 3.5 years because of a restricted offensive gameplan and “No” I do not believe the coaching staff is smart or competent in their handling the Qb issue. If not for the buyout and extension Pruitt may have already been fired for the last three weeks.

I don't think Pruitt is even close to being fired (buyout or not) because of recruiting which has been going well and is key to rebuilding any program (Fulmer knows that better than anyone). However Pruitt does need to win at least 3 of the remaining games this year or otherwise the noise level will go up and will create very uncomfortable off-season for both Pruitt and Fulmer (which would negatively impact recruiting and then all bets are off regarding job security).

The noise level will go up tenfold if we lose to Arkansas without any significant playing time for BM or HB.

I agree - Arkansas is a must win or the wheels could completely come off if we lose that (but I still think Pruitt and Chaney will go with JG at least to start the game).

everyone keeps forgetting that this season counts against no ones eligibility. Redshirts don’t exist this year.

I dont want to know how it will feel to lose to Arkansas next week.

I also only believe we will win that if Maurer starts or at least plays the majority of the game.

If JG starts we need to pray that he does something that gets him benched that isn't Kentucky level bad.

Like maybe one throw into triple coverage in the red zone on the first drive? Can he be done then?
