According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the NFL is going to dramatically change how the Pro Bowl is done this season.

"NFL eliminated traditional AFC-NFC Pro Bowl matchup; will be replaced with Pro-Bowl fantasy-like draft, per ESPN sources," he tweeted. "Now players will be assigned to teams through the Pro Bowl Draft (really). Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will be draft captains. ... No more kickoffs in Pro Bowl. Rosters will consist of 43 players per squad. Game will be played Jan 26 in Honolulu."

The NHL has been using the fantasy-draft approach for a while now, but it's hard to believe that this will resuscitate the Pro Bowl, which has seemingly been on life support for years. Injuries are simply to prevalent in football to convince players to play competitively in what essentially amounts to a meaningless pickup game.

Will not make the game any more interesting or fun to watch. They need to do away with it honestly.

Interesting idea, but unless they throw a major financial incentive out there, the game will never be watchable.

They'll obviously never play a game of football the way it's meant to be played. Not that I've got any ideas, but something both fun and entertaining . Hell, a "Battle of the Network Stars" deal would be a massive improvement over what they put on now.

Anyone remember when college seniors played NFL players in some kind of Allstar game? I was just a kid in the 70s can't remember the details.

I like the idea, wish they did it in basketball. Still won't watch a single second of the game. I miss the skills challenges personally, much more interesting than the actual game.

It's still stupid to me they play it before the Super Bowl, how can you have an All Star game where many of the best players aren't even going to available?

I like the idea, but move it back to after the Pro Bowl.

Despite everyone saying they won't/don't watch it, the Pro Bowl actually pulls in pretty good ratings, regardless of how worthless it is. So I doubt it's going away anytime soon.

Honestly, from the injury standpoint, I really don't see why ANY league has them anymore. I know injuries are rare for most of them but still, why risk it in a meaningless game?

The NBA already has the bigger names skipping the skills competitions.

Play for a charity. The winner gets x amount, the loser gets y amount. Its not personal incentive but its something players will get behind.

I kind of doubt they'd play any different than it is now. Basically you're interrupting their vacation, and potentially endangering their careers, for the "honor" of being in the Pro Bowl. If i were selected, i think I'd be pissed.

Fair enough. I feel like if I were playing for a worthy cause though that I would actually try a little harder a opposes to just playing for literally nothing.

The Pro Bowl is the worst all-star game in all of sports.

Rice makes a good point.

"You've got prima donnas, egocentrics, who act like it's not an honor," Rice told USA Today Sports. "Plus, they're thinking, 'Why should I go and jeopardize what I'm doing?' But it should be for the fans.

"How can you get the players to recognize that it's an honor? You've got to play your best football in the Pro Bowl. So the spirit of this needs to be changed. I'm not sure that can be accomplished now."

I used to love the MLB all star game growing up, but now it has become boring like all the all star games --- maybe because to many all stars dont show up at them anymore

MLBs all star became stupid when they made it decide home field advantage in the world series.

It's the worst because of how it has to be. There's no way they'd ever agree to play it in the middle of the season, so they have to put it at the end but having either before or after the biggest sporting event in the country means no one is going to care.

Honestly I think all them are pretty dumb. I think all of them should cut their all star games and just announce who were the All Stars.

Need to go back to the Super Team Competitions. I was at the one in 1975 when the Steelers and Vikings did the epic tug of war. It was great competition and fun to watch.
