I haven't seen effective 3rd down defense in over a decade from Tennessee. I'm ready for that to be a strength. Still isn't as of yet.
It is what it is and it is bad.
The physical talent is there to be in the middle of the pack or maybe even the top third in sec. The problem, however, is that these guys were poisoned by Dooley and were mentally conditioned to be losers. That's our biggest hurdle right now. Once we get past that, it will all start clicking.
I'm not saying that Butch is bad, but what he inherited was a colossal mess. Two words to generally describe our fanbase. Impatient and stupid. That's not a good formula for Tennessee getting back to greatness anytime soon.
Where is this talent on defense that you speak of? They are slow and unathletic, Plus bad football instincts, and intangibles.
We lead the country in interceptions. That's something. At least half the SEC would trade up to get our starters on D for their physical abilities. They would still have to be mentally rehabbed.
Yes that is something, but as far as the fundamentals of tackling, angles, setting the edge, and just plain stubborn toughness. Dude they suck. I love em for being Vols, but they suck. And they are so freaking slow at so many positions. There is some talent, but it is disjointed and non complimentary talent.
I wouldn't ever say the word "sucks" to anyone who wears the orange.
Gotta remember Ruck, some of these guys have seen three different coaches and three different styles of play. It takes time to unlearn bad habits (or even learn good ones to start with) and that's a time consuming process. But I will say I have seen their stubbornness coming out. They haven't quit yet, save the Oregon game maybe. And we would have packed it in last year had we been in the same situation last year with Florida after three interceptions. But they clawed their way back into the game and continued til the clock read 0:00.
As for the talent, lot of young kids out there that tossed into the fire as freshmen and sophomores that have never seen anything by a high school stadium before. Gonna take some time to build the potential talent up.
You're right I shouldn't say that they suck. I am just saying that they are just not good, and it is going to take a near miracle from this staff to wipe the stench of losing, and bad habits off of them. One thing that is just infuriating to no end to me, is they just keep giving up these big a$$ plays on third down. I know it isn't on the coaches. These guys have been taught, and shown over, and over, and over what they have are doing wrong, and how to correct it. Then they go out and do the same stupid crap again. That is just unfathomable to me. It is not on the coach when you see guys be in position to make a play, and blow it, or blow their assignments. Anyways sorry for using the word sucks. I agree that is over the line.
