New Kicker?

Agree, if we stop the 4th down TD pass or the 2 pt conv. game over. The missed FG was our 3rd opportunity to win
Exactly! All that or score seven when UGA turns the ball over in their own territory also late in the 4th quarter. Max is the easiest to blame, but the TEAM lost that game.

Isn't Max a true freshman? Give the kid a break.
Agree and disagree with this to some extent. We don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, but he needs to take a step forward. Usually some carrot and some stick are needed from the coaches, unless he’s really internally motivated. Anyhow, slagging him on a public forum is probably not productive.

Max didn’t “lose” the Georgia game, he failed to win it. Sounds like semantics but there is a difference. We were tied when he missed the kick and could have won it in OT. Max gave us the lead in OT with a kick from almost the same spot. The defense failed to hold it.

There were many failures in the game. Most notably, the TD on 4th down, the 2 point conversion (where there was a total bust on D on the play), the offense only gaining 1 yard in OT and the defense getting immediately gashed after the FG in OT and ultimately giving up the winning TD. Max (and the FG unit) was one of the few people to actually DO his job in OT. Yes, you can say his miss put us there. But all the blunders BEFORE (clock management and false start too) his miss put him there. It’s a team game and the team lost that game.

I trust CJH and the coaches that he was our best option this year. If they feel the position needs to be upgraded (like Defensive Coordinator), I trust them to go get someone better. Or get a sports psychologist to get Max better prepared to face that situation if it ever comes up again.
That’s one way to look at it. However, the outcome of the ball game depended on his kick and he failed to make it. The snap was good the hold was good but the kick was not good. If he’d had made it, we win. He missed and we lost. Seems pretty simple where the problem was.

His job is to kick field goals and he failed to make one he should have made. It cost us the game against one of the top seeds in the country He missed another makable field goal and flirted with missing a couple of extra points I would like to see completion during the off season to make st we have our most accurate kicker kicking for us next season. If is our best, he is the guy.
Sure he missed the FG but there are plenty of plays throughout the game, if executed better, would not have put him (or the team) in a position where we had to have a FG. No games comes down to only one play.

That was my original thought as well, in my comment immediately following the Georgia game. As I’ve followed this season my attitude regarding power 5 field goal kickers has evolved a bit. They have ONE job when called upon and that is to put the ball through the uprights . In today’s game… a reasonable expectation should encompass any distance out to 45 yds. Some might even say 50 ( I don’t, btw) .
Given the mercenary nature of college football from now until some kind of sanity returns, re: NIL money, player salaries and the transfer portal…I have to expect any Coach who aspires to ALWAYS MAKE THE FINAL 4 in the playoffs, with the occasional National Championship, to require a place kicker MAKE THE KICK… or said coach go out and buy one that can. It’s just that simple, and that ugly… and I hate it, but here we are.

Hell no.

He missed not 1 but 2 FGs in a ROW against Bama last year.

He is lucky he didnt cost us that game too. Coaches should never have let him come back this year after he went through that stretch last year missing kicks in big SEC games is a pattern...not an outlier.

Gilberts ass needs to be gone. Period. Our whole season has an entirely different outlook and we are ranked just outside the playoffs with 3 losses at worst if he does his dang job vs UGA

He's a good kicker his stats are good you should never rely on a fg to win

He missed 2FGs vs Bama last year in one of our biggest games.

Cost us the UGA regardless of how yall want to spin it. He should have made that 42yd FG and we should have won. Period

He cost us the OK game too. Missed 2FGs AGAIN in a HUGE game to stay in the playoffs. Their kicker WON them the game. Made 3 HUGE 50yd kicks in the same game.

OKs kicker is an ASSET.
OUR kicker is a LIABILITY. GOT TO GO.

All Umarov had to do against UGA was not jump and Max gets a kick from dead center and yet we could've still lined it up. Yeah it sucks he missed but the rest of the team didn't help. Any type of defense and we dont need a FG to win.

Or maybe when you get a strip sack in the opponents territory you don’t run three times and settle for a field goal. That sequence actually infuriated me even more than the missed field goal.

“Play for, and make the breaks, and when one comes our way score”

The kid is terrified in pressure situations. You can look at him and tell his blood pressure is rising. That’s not good, I don’t trust him to win it for us. Any other team has us in that position they nail the 42 yarder and send us home as losers.

When enough players don't make plays that they could have...and should have made...you lose.

Max has to be held to the same standard as the others. Every year, we recruit to reload / upgrade the roster.

It's time to find Max's replacement.

I agreed with the latest comment, and believe we need a new place kicker… UNLESS Max can be “ coached up”and develop over the offseason into a more reliable player at his position than we saw this year.
