New Kicker?

I was a punter/holder in college. With soccer style kicking, you have to lean the ball away from the kicker to counteract the natural hook spin. Some high level kickers want the ball to be slightly forward to bring the sweet spot up a bit. I held for the kicker from FSU in a camp session back in the day and he wanted me to also press the ball down.
Didn't know, the reason I asked is that on the overtime kick the ball was straight up. Could have to do with angles I guess.

Does anybody know if we are looking for a new kicker? Max seems to get the yips when the game is on the line.
i know you have posted several times about our kicker. He missed 3 or 4 field goals all year. Yes he missed the big field goal against UGA , his first game of the season. He is a freshman or sophomore. He will be a great kicker by the time he graduates. Kickers need experience in big games for long term success. He will be fine. Give him a little slack.

It’s like golf. Sometimes you’ve got a little slice working one day and the next it’s a draw. Pregame my kicker and I always figured out what was working that day and adjusted accordingly. But generally it’s a few degrees off of 90 and slightly forward.

He's a good kicker his stats are good you should never rely on a fg to win
This. Anytime you rely on a FG to win you are taking a risk. Everything in the game leading up to that moment is what decided the game. Penalties, turnovers, missed opportunities, 50-50 balls, those are the plays that decide games.

Did you watch the Indiana /Ohio St Championship game ? The nation's #1 team lost after their kicker missed a game tying FG. Kickers are human, but I hope we can get that one solid kicker who never misses. Give him the check book

I would surely hope that we are searching high and low for a dependable kicker. We have pretty much always been able to count on our kickers. What happened this year is beyond me. Hopefully what happened in the Georgia game will remind coach we must be able to count on our kicking game.

Agree, if we stop the 4th down TD pass or the 2 pt conv. game over. The missed FG was our 3rd opportunity to win

Players playing in close games have opportunities to alter outcomes. If an OL or DL or special teamer. Any one play could have changed it and you might never try the field goal. No one knows if he kicks it through if no false start. That could have been the play that really changed it.

At the time, I thought Heupel should have called time out and let Max reset mentally. Run to the sideline and hit a practice kick. That might have a mistake.

Maybe we should replace every kid that missed his opportunity to make a play leading to a win?

His job is to kick field goals and he failed to make one he should have made. It cost us the game against one of the top seeds in the country He missed another makable field goal and flirted with missing a couple of extra points I would like to see completion during the off season to make st we have our most accurate kicker kicking for us next season. If is our best, he is the guy.

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise folks. Had we won v UGA, then we may have been playing Vandy for a spot in the playoff, winner take all. Getting boat raced (no anchor down pun intended) vy the commode-doors was already humiliating enough. Imagine how this place would have melted down if they had knocked us out of the playoff in that beatdown?! :-o

The blame for losing to Georgia can laid at the feet of a host of players but mostly it's on the coach. Making a field goal from that distance is never a guarantee. I've seen plenty of NFL kickers miss from that distance and less. He's got plenty of leg. IMHO he will have learned a lot from that miss and should be better next year.
No the loss is squarely on the kicker. You can spin how you like he had a chance to win it and blew it. The loss is on him

Some really bad nfl kicker moments. Guess NFL blocks attaching it but it will load off YouTube.

In postgame comments on this forum, a lot of folks were pretty hard on Max. I was one of those who pointed out that the entire team bears the real responsibility for putting us in the position of having to rely on ONE FG to win. You know.. old school thinking..” We win as a team and lose as a team”. Well friends, as this season has gone by, as I watched various Power 5 games, SEC, Big 10 etc…it’s sadly become obvious that “ Old School” thinking and emotions are no longer appropriate in Power 5 College Football. It’s become NFL-Lite, Semi-Pro w/ a class schedule. 🙁. That said then, my attitude has evolved. Without castigating Max, our season is pretty much in the books now. I’m just going to say that going forward, whomever is our place kicker has to be held accountable for DOING HIS JOB. It’s just that simple. Regardless of how the game evolved, how the team got into the situation in the first place… the kicker’s JOB is to make every field goal that is within reasonable distance… Period. If Coach Heupel doesn’t have that confidence in his kicker… he needs to buy a new one. Yea, I said it and I hate it, but here we are.

So Gibbs finally has a good player, and it’s a kicker lol.
