New Commit - DE/LB Martaze Jackson

I like the pick up...here's a big reason why:

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound linebacker from Demopolis (Ala.) High School told the News Sentinel on Sunday he committed during his official visit this weekend after exploring Tennessee’s engineering school.

“It was a really good school,” said Jackson, who plans to major in electrical engineering in college.

Then there was UT’s athletic department, which also won Jackson over.

“The football program is real nice,” Jackson said. “There’s going to be real big changes coming.”

Good to see someone wanting some academics, also!

He had only had offers from South Alabama, UAB and LaTech. He lives in a town about 40 miles from Tuscaloosa, but wasn't recruited by Bama. Maybe he will be great, but that should tell you something. If he was really that big of a catch, don't you think Bama or Auburn would have already had him by now..

Word on the street is this guy wasn't recruited by Bama or Barn...Go figure. Can't post a link, but I got it from a reliable source.

Oh, and I just found out he was offered by South Alabama, La Tech. He also lives 40 miles from Tuscalooser.

There are many examples of players that exceeded their recruiting ranking, but I would rather have a class with a 3.75 average than one with a 3.25 average. My point is that Tennessee will not be competitive with the Floridas and Alabamas with a significant number of recruits of this caliber.

I agree with you man, but in reality these players arent that far apart. Boise State has probably never signed a Five * player.

Yes and if we played boises regular season schedule that would be ok. I'm not knocking Boise state, good coach and good program. But I don't think the team would hold up if it played our schedule over the next two years.

I do agree, many good players were three stars, but many more were five or four stars. It's all bout averages..., or getting really lucky.

The problem is where is this guy going to play? He is small and slow.

One of the recruiting services thought he would fill out to about 240lbs. At 4.58, could be about right for a pass rushing linebacker in a 3-4. He's a year fr being ready to play at least.

No, they wouldnt hold up in SEC play. They have some kind of ridiculous 49-4 record under Peterson that would look a lot different if they play in the SEC. But I will bet you this-You replace VATECH with Boise in that bowl game and they run circles around us too. And we are loaded with 4 and 5 * star recruits. All Im saying is, that unless you go out and get a Reggie Bush or Tim Tebow then the rest of these guys all measure up within a few percentage points of each other. A school like Boise proves that the world doesnt end if the 5* guys go elsewhere.

I agree they are a better team than tenn is right now, but it is not true that we are loaded with 4 & 5 star recruites. Two of our last 4 recruiting classes were barely ranked in the top 25. From the start of x's tenurn we have lost 22 scholarship players. We have some good players but overall our talent is not good. This has left us open to being devistated by injury. By the va tech game we were on our fourth guy playing middle linebacker. Lathers is going to be a good backer for us, but he is a true freshman and not an inside backer either. Monte was a great dc, but not even he can overcome a lack of players. Injury is the other factor you have to look at when trying to evaluate how another team would fair in the sec. An sec schedule can devestate a roster ( see tenn at linebacker). How would Boise's twos fair when the ones go down?

Im with you on that-They dont have any more depth than anyone else if they start losing people. But I went back on Rivals and looked at their last four signed classes. Its a joke dude. 2 and 3* are all they been getting. Tennessee has been doing much better and so have a lot of schools that are way behind them. Im not saying that we go out and get 2 and 3* kids, but just not to panic if we sign say 17 or 18 4* kids. It doesnt mean we are that far behind anyone.
