New coach better be better than Leach

By then, we will totally miss out on him to another school. Don't you think Nebraska wishes they had got Frost 2 years and gotten a head start on recruiting implementing his system?

No, I think Nebraska is fine with how things played out because Scott Frost is better for going abroad and getting that HC xp. Nebraska is about to hire a guy who may be 12-0 and is going to inject new enthusiasm into their program. I think both Neb and Frost would have been worse off if he had gone there from the get-go.

We are not gonna miss out on Tee next time.

Our ace in the hole is that this is his Alma Mater. That's a waste of a hand to play it now when he's an unproven HC and nobody is beating down the door to hire him ATM. Play it when he *hopefully* does well at a mid-level school as an HC after a couple of years and we are hopefully more stable as a program (ie hire someone like Miles who is not a long term solution)

So.. you'd rather John Currie, after the whole crap storm that blew through the program this week, still have a job? Not to mention Phil getting the AD spot loosens the grip the Haslem's have on the program as well.

Trust Phil.. Quit jumping ship before we even set sail.
Currie was not the problem

Leach only has one 10+ win season in his entire career. He has never been more than an 8 win average coach.

He's slightly above average, but there are much better coaches out there.

No, Leach beat Stoops and Oklahoma 3 times with vastly inferior talent. He had a better record against the big boys than did Patterson, who everyone was goo-goo gah-gah over. He's the only gettable coach that could really shake things up in the SEC. Losing Leach without an exceptional coach lined up is not a fair tradeoff to getting Phil to replace Currie. I like Phil, but if he is behind nixing the Leach deal, and doesn't pull a "Gruden" type coach out of his hat, then this is a VERY BAD day for UT.

I firmly believe Mike Leach remains a viable candidate. The list probably includes:

Les Miles
Mike Leach
Tee Martin
Kevin Sumlin
Chad Morris

Philip Fulmer is a very practical guy and knows what it takes to win in the SEC at a high level. He is likable. I have full faith in him.

If Leach is still viable, then why did Fulmer or whomever kill the deal?

I know,BUT that was at Texas Tech and Washington State. Pretty impressive imo. There are better coaches out there for sure. But very very few who would come here and Leach is the ONLY one that is crazy enough to take it. Plus the offense and the interviews! Would be entertaining for sure imo.

Some of $h*+ y’all are saying about Tee Martin is flat out disrespectful. Oh he’s not ready, he doesn’t have any experience, the job is too big for him, we need an experienced head coach. The crazy thing is there is a head coach at Georgia in his second season ever as a head coach that’s in the sec championship game. Y’all need to relax, with the right staff tee would do just fine. Please tell me what conference championship leach ever won? From what I see, his best finish at WSU is second or third in his division, he’s Butch Jones with a better offense and personality

If the new coach isn't better than Leach, it's all for naught. That's why I think it's the white whale. If not, I'll be super disappointed.

Because with UT it's all about control and who gets credit. Tennessee is a toy everyone is wrestling with to take control of. Like a bunch of 5th graders. "It's mine...no it's mine...I get to make the decision...gimme". Phil talks about "team' and not worrying who gets credit etc...but I highly doubt everyone's best interest isn't in the greatness of Tennessee being realized and very much about who gets "credit".

If we end up hiring someone worse than Leach I’m going to be pretty ticked.

Tee Martin is who Phillip Fulmer seems to be interested in. He really talked about someone who wants to be here and hire a coordinator is fine because he started as a coordinator. Ugh

Not sure I understand. Your title says that they had better be better than Leach but your post says you'll be ticked if they're worse than Leach.

I for one would still be very happy with Leach as he would ignite the fanbase like no one since, well Schiano...hahaha

With the talent level he would have access to at UT i sincerely think his offense could be outstanding

Of course, I could get on board with most anyone as long as they don't have some serious personal issues.

Good question. The deal would have been killed regardless of the hire, simply because Fulmer was leveraging himself to take Currie’s place once he was fired. I do not believe this was ever about Mike Leach. He just so happened to be the next coach in the pecking order. With that said, Leach’s chances are probably less than they were, but he is still on the board, IMO.

What I can’t understand for the life of me if why Mike Leach was a contingent plan to Dave Doroen. That made absolutely no sense. That’s like saying... “I’ll hire Sean Payton if Butch Jones says no”.

I'm 100% fine with Tee Martin. Worst case scenario is that he's one of the best recruiters in the nation and we're routinely making bowl games. Best case scenario is that we're back to competing for national championships.

I'm good with Mike Leach too. The pirate is one of the best offensive minds in the game and he'd have the resources to hire a top-tier DC.

I don't get the infatuation people have with Les Miles. He underperformed with some of the best talent in the nation. Didn't have a workable offense in years.

Miles’ winning percentage in the SEC was better than Richt, Spurrier, and Meyer’s, and had a natty and played in another during the Saban era. That’s the infatuation

Leach was the best coach we've talked to in the process. He has a top 20 offense and defense this year at a program that was something like 9-41 in its last 50 games before he arrived. If given the choice of Leach as HC or Fulmer as AD I'm picking Leach and it's not even close. Phil, you're on the clock.

Yeah we have talked to a ton of coaches lol. An AD is much more important than a HC in the long run.

Miles shelf life expired like it does for all coaches who stay in one place for too long and don't evolve. He didn't evolve and was jettisoned. There's a reason no one looks his way. His title was while Saban was at Miami. He's just another guy Saban put out to pasture these days.

This is bigger than Mike Leach or any coach we could have hired. NO coach would have succeeded here as long as Currie and more importantly Haslam were running the show.

Tee has zero 10+ win seasons. In fact he has never had a win as a head coach. It would be a low percentage gamble.
We almost hired Greg Shiano and Dan Doeren and you are talking about a low percentage gamble really that's your response to this thread?

No, it's not at all. If the head football coach has it rolling he's the face of the university and most popular man in the state. Alabama would feed their AD to cannibals tomorrow if Saban wanted them to do it. The AD needs to raise money and not make this place into a complete joke. That's just tough with all the behind the scenes plotting and drama and I'm going to include Phil in all that. He wanted the big seat though and now he has it. His future legacy at UT is on the line with this hire.

The HoH never wanted Leach because they couldn’t control him. Currie whet rogue to go and try to seal a deal with Leach (which sound like he was successful) which was the final straw in the eyes of HoH. Now he is out. Fortunately (maybe) Fulmer got instated instead of another Haslam puppet. Time will tell if Fulmer was the right choice or if we should have went to Blackburn.
