Never know. RB was 60Doubt UNC is going to hire a coach that will turn 64 this year. Personally, I think UNC fans are in for a rude awakening just like Kentucky when they hired Mark Pope. This is not your mother’s era of college athletics. Tradition and history of a program are less meaningful than ever. It’s all about the Benjamin’s and so many schools are flush with cash and can support winning at a high level without getting run out of town after a few bad years.
Wouldn’t be surprised at all if UNC ends up with someone like Josh Schertz.

If UNC is gonna go mid major route for next coach, they have zero reason to fire Davis.
The issue for Kentucky was they thought they can move on from Cal and hire anyone they want. I think the board has changed some where the UNC job with their resources could be more appealing than the Kentucky job. UNC is likely willing to spend whatever it takes to land a whale because they are losing ground to Duke given how Scheyer’s career has started out.
The guy I think that makes most sense is Cal. He willingly left Kentucky to take the Arkansas job. I see no reason he would choose to stay at Arkansas if UNC came calling. Especially since UNC is out of the tourney and is likely to have their decision on Davis settled by the time Arkansas’ season is over.
I guess I’m on an island here, but I just don’t see North Carolina being able to poach a head coach of an already elite program nor do I see them hiring Cal at 67 years old. Plus, it’s not like Arkansas is a program with little history in college basketball. They have a national title and some of the richest donors in college sports with the Waltons and the Tysons. Cal isn’t having any trouble recruiting at Arkansas.
I like Cal to build a tournament team now that Covid seniors are a thing of the past. That’s what I think ruined him at Kentucky. Competing with K and Self for the top one and done’s, along with 6th year seniors.Cal isn’t having trouble recruiting anywhere. But at UNC, he’s essentially being the best recruiter in the country at one of the top 3 jobs in the country with a hungry fan base.
And he’s likely to coach for another 5-6 years. UNC fans right now would take that window to get the program back to competing for titles considering the postseason troubles they’ve had compared to Duke.
UNC is gonna go the route of Kentucky if they fire Davis and hire a mid major name or something similar to a Pope like hire.
Arkansas has history hit they are nothing compared to the UNC job. Cal didn’t up and leave Lexington for Fayetteville because of Arkansas’ “tradition”

He has at least one more good run in him now that some obstacles have cleared.

This is exactly my point. Cal left one of the bluest of blue bloods to go to Arkansas because he wanted to reset his clock AND he didn’t think the administration was giving him enough in NIL support. So, he went somewhere with less tradition where he could get more support financially.
Personally, I just don’t buy into “tradition” being an appeal anymore. Tradition mattered for quite some time when you couldn’t pay players and the way you recruited talent was the allure of playing where the all-time greats came from.
That isn’t the case anymore. You have programs all over the country with less tradition finding huge success. It’s just how I feel.
They may slide if they go the mid major route, or they could go the mid major and end up with the next Todd Golden or Dan Hurley. There’s no exact science to coaching hires.Cal isn’t having trouble recruiting anywhere. UNC is gonna slide drastically if they go the route of Kentucky if they fire Davis and hire a mid major name or something similar to a Pope like hire.

At some point each of these coaches was considered the best in college ball. I’m sure each of them hates letting it end with a whimper after Coach K, Bill Self, Jay Wright, and Dan Hurley have all won multiple titles too.Cal is older than I thought. But he and Pitino are of the same cloth in that they are much younger and hungrier than their actual age. I just don’t see Cal hanging it up anytime soon considering he’s always gonna be landing 5 stars year in and out.
