I mean, how many wide open deep balls did Nico miss against Alabama? How many against Florida (plus drops)? He had wide open WRs against Arkansas that he didn’t miss because he never saw them (including a wide open WR in the end zone on the final play).
We can’t put that on Halzle’s ability as an OC. They were schemed open. Furthermore, I don’t think Halzle is really in charge of the offense. That’s Heupel.
Truth is, it’s been a combination of inaccurate QBs (and with sometimes poor field vision) and SEC defenses that have adjusted to Heupel’s offense. We need to see a counter-punch. I think they were working on that in the spring with pistol elements and tighter formations at times. My guess is that bringing Littrell in was a move towards helping to refine (not change) the offense.
It’ll be interesting to see how they look with Aguilar this year. He reputedly hits the deep ball. Hitting our share of those opens up everything else.
