National Champions

I was 14 in 98. Don't get me wrong I was happy as hell but I took it for granted. We were so good back then I just assumed it was something that happened every few years. I would appreciate a NC exponentially more now than I did then.

National championships are hard to come by....I hope I live to see another one. The fact is that a national championship should not be the goal but instead Sec championships. If you can win the Sec you will probably have as good of a chance getting to the big one as anyone else. If we can't win at least one Sec championship this decade this program has really gone in the sewer.

National Championships are very difficult to get.

in 1998 if one of 3 plays goes against us we likely would not have played for NC that year which was our first opportunity in 47 years.

this league is 100 times more difficult to win now than it was in 1998. that is likely to get harder before it gets easier.

I seriously doubt I live to see us win another National Championship. Most reading this post won't either..

I hope to see an SEC Championship before I pass on..

And the winner of the most depressing post of the day goes to...

It is impossible to tell what will happen in the future of college football. We could continue on our current path of mediocrity, or become juggernauts who destroy everyone we come in contact with. I would guess somewhere in the middle with some years better than others. It's ill-advised to say we won't win a NC in the future, just as it is to say we will win one. You never know how things will shake out.

No championships, but lots of well rounded young men will graduate under CDD's watch. So we'll have that. But have no fear, Fulmer will get the blame.

I still don't understand what the reasoning for us not winning a championship soon is. I mean we have just as good if not better tradition than auburn who just won it all. Does everyone think its because of our coaches or our situation? What is it that tells you that we can't win one soon?

Pay no mind to the naysayers. Maybe pay no mind to me as well. All the same, this is what I think. Whatever the outcome of the NCAA decision, a chain of events will occur. The current mess at the UT will scare off many 4 and 5 star recruits. CDD's focus on character will result in the misconception Tennessee takes players no one else wants. This will put a huge chip on the players' shoulders, combined with CDD and company's focus on developing players including making many multi-position capable will result highly motivated and capable players on the field. They will win and not just against lower tier teams. They will win because they're highly motivated and very capable.

When high profile players see these "unwanted" players being drafted in significant numbers, they're going to want to come to UT. But with the serious understanding their conduct determines if we even want them or if they can even stay here. Parents seeing the type of individuals CDD turns out will (already are) push sons to be here as well. We will start pulling in more and more 4 and 5 star recruits as a result.

Moreover, the NCAA is determined to illustrate they are no longer a paper tiger. Rules will disallow problem players from treating schools like free agency options (Newton, Masoli etc). This levels the playing field and the UT will have a head start with its manner of recruiting. It's not just CDD, the NFL as well is starting to say enough is enough with the immature and criminal conduct of players. No matter how talented you are if you're a problem, you're aren't welcome. coaches who aren't or can't adapt to this new reality will lose out big time. The Nutt, nuts and like coaches will see character recruiters like CDD win in the end.

I also believe that seeing what the UT has done to righten itself, seeing our troubles as a result of being waylaid by the dishonesty of Kiffin and company, we will see a trend of national sympathy for the UT. People will pull for the success of a once proud institution. We will become the college version of the Dallas Cowboys (America's Team) with a fanbase ignoring state lines nationwide.

Despite the current mess at the UT, rather than seeing it as a deep rut, this is our finest hour if we have the guts to make it so. The orange blazes with blinding brilliance.

We have won, what? 2 legit ACTUAL national championships in our history? I think the chances are slim we win another one in the next 20-30 years. College Football has more parity now than its ever had, and the SEC is stronger than ever. That said, if you win the SEC you pretty much have a spot locked down in the NCG. Our goal should be winning the SEC and letting the cards fall where they may.

winning a national championship is like a nascar race, any little thing can go wrong and its over for that year/race....amazed at how much luck can play into it......i'm more interested in building a program with solid kids, depth, and good coaching......teams like this entertain me and in the end being entertained year in and year out, is more what its about...one of fulmer's biggest sins was that he got boring and started producing a lame non-entertaining product despite having a nc...

The responses in this thread seem depressing. I'd bet the Vols win at least one in my lifetime. It is, however, extremely difficult to predict when it may happen, and it's not just because we're struggling right now.

It's basically impossible to predict anything further than six or seven, maybe eight or nine years out, but I would say it's highly improbable or totally unlikely that UT wins the big one by 2020.
No one knows when or if we will ever win another national championship. We cant predit the future so we dont know what it holds for us. We could go on a great run this next ten years with multiple top 5 recruiting classes, 3 or 4 SEC championships, and 1 or 2 National Championships or we could be awful with lots of losing seasons. No one can really say because no one really knows.

Auburn won because somebody paid the father of one of most unstoppable players I have seen on the college level for 1 year of his service. UF won because they had one of the best college fb players of all time at qb. Bama won because of saban. We currently don't have that caliber of player or proven coach.

All I want is to see one more before I die and that will be one of the best days of my life

Us true fans believe the Vols will win three national titles in the next eight years.

I'm hoping that all the "I hope we can just win another SEC title before I die" type comments are coming from posters in their 70's.

Geez it's depressing how true this post is.

I'm only 27 but within the last few years the realization that I may die before UT wins another NC has started to sink in. It's far more likely that we win 0 than it is that we win 2 or 3.

The SEC is certainly tough these days, but if Auburn can win one, you bet your ass UT can.

One thing that generally seems to be consistent is the programs with strong history generally seem to be among the top programs in the country. It's pretty hard for new guys to come up and take over, IMO. I'd say that bodes pretty well for Tennessee. We've been awful for years, have little in state talent, have a coach we pulled out of nowhere, and we're still pulling in top ten classes. We're obviously going to be able to compete with the top teams.

Looking over the threads(primary at the one that ask what will and will not happen in the next 5 years), it doesn't seem like a whole lot of people have Tennessee winning the big one. I'm not sure if it's because of faith in Dooley or sanctions or whatever.

I'd like to get some opinions on if we'll win a national championship in Dooley's time here or even when we'll ever win one again. And I'd like to hear the reason for why or why not.

From a hogs perspective i would say its because of all the internal chaos thats been going on in your program. The lack of stability lately such as coaching distractions (fulmer, kiffin, pearl), and now the possibility of the NCAA laying down the hammer on you guys, it just doesn't seem likely that y'all will be heading to the BSC NC anytime soon - IMO. But best of luck to you guys either way. This is the SEC after all and anything can happen.

This, we certainly have the resources to win another one. The fact of the matter is no one knows when our next one will come. It could be this decade or 30 years from now. We'll be back in the national title hunt someday.

We don't pay attention to hog fans that live in Dallas. :glare: :neener:
