Nakos on TN quarterback search

If we bring in a hired hand, top level QB, how do you keep them all happy when they all want to play? For those of us who didn't watch the Orange/white game why not just go with Merk as starter, maybe bring in a 3 rd string QB to compete for the job down the road? If you bring in a starter type QB even for 1 year, wouldn't you risk losing Merk ?
Merk wasn't starting this year behind Nico. If you bring in a 1yr experienced guy, nothing has changed for Merk and G-Mac from what was expected before Nico left.

Merk's problem is next year. Does he progress enough to stay ahead of G-Mac and Brandon is the potential wild card who might be a freshman phenom.

We have a redshirt freshman, a true freshman and Faizon Brandon coming in. Hopefully he honors his commitment.
Bring in a guy for insurance and ride with what we have building to the future.

Bringing in a guy to start for one season and Brandon the following year just seems counter productive.
What would be the future for the two currently on campus? Brandon would sit one year, that's probably it.

" But we got a championship caliber team" And need a big time QB to take us to the promised land. One we're going to rip away from another program at the last minute.

Uh, huh.
His parents already sued the state of NC over high school players not being eligible for NIL money...........hope he honors his contract.

I want the guy from KSU. But there are others that I think could be good.. those of you saying not to get a QB need to understand we need at least 3 on the roster.
Been watching film of Baylor QB Rocco Becht and Iowa St. QB Sawyer Robinson. I think either would be a good fit with our WRs.... Both (Rocco mainly) utilize WR screens and throw to the TE...

GO VOLS!!!

I wish that Tennessee had tried to get Trinidad Chambliss. That dude can play, but it seems he is signing with Ole Miss.

Good points. I’m not seeing anything like a championship team this year, not while breaking in a new OL. I see a ceiling of maybe 9-3. And Brandon isn’t going to start as a freshman. Sure, bring in a caretaker to help us this year while we develop our two QBs to fight it out next year.
Brandon is on another level from the 2 kids we have now. That’s not to belittle their potential to develop into starters, but look at Florida and South Carolina last year with their two freshmen. Brandon is on that level at the minumum.

He’s not a development project. JM and GM are players you develop to reach the level that would see them become good starters in the SEC. Brandon is a kid who will compete for the starting job when he steps on campus.

They throw it where the offensive play called indicates where it should be thrown. Hopefully and usually, one of the options is open. The QB hopefully finds the open target. nHowever, that did not happen very much last yer
ar and often when the QB did see the open target, the ball was not deliver on the target. It is very difficult for defenses to have all targets on a play covered. That is why you see some QBs completing 65-70 % of the throws. When all receivers blew to see it and scramble for a gain. That has not happened as often as hoped for since 2022.

Then I would be good to let those three battle for the starting job next fall…with the hope that the new freshman can win it. We maybe take our lumps for a year (maybe not), but should be back to a good place by 2026.

I'd rather play any day than sit the bench unless I'm in the NFL doing like Dobbs, saying I sat the bench on a SEC team because someone needed a cheap body and paid me doesn't say SEC caliber player to me.
If you're looking for a bench mop duty guy then the only reasonable choice is to bring Gaston back, no one has taken him, toss him $100-150K to come back and help the other two develop but also knows what CJH wants if the worse should happen and his number gets called. $100-150K is better than no pay.
There is only one quarterback spot. Whether some like it or not some very good quarterbacks are going to have to wait at least 1 year. In fact most are and some might have to wait 2. And for most of them it’s a blessing in disguise. I mean it happens every once in a while, but true freshman coming in and completely showing out their true freshman year doesn’t happen most of the time. That doesn’t mean some shouldn’t start in any given situation. It just means more than likely your going to have some highs and lows, most make a good jump that second and 3rd year if they are going to make a quality SEC quarterback or future pro. GBO

Merk and Mac were both highly rated coming out of HS. They were recruited to play when their time came. They should know our system well enough to start moving chains and putting points on the board. Go Vols!

Good points. But, forgive me, I’ve heard this claim too many times before with other QBs who’ve yet to even enroll at Tennessee. We have a tradition of not starting freshmen QBs unless we have no choice. We’ve had many, many good-to-great QBs at Tennessee and I can remember none, not a one, who competed for the starting job the moment they stepped on campus. Conversely, I can remember a boatload of highly hyper-hyped freshman QBs coming in and who simply proved they weren’t ready for the big time their freshman years. I think Peyton played as a freshman but I can’t remember if he actually started a game as a freshman. Magbe he did when the QB in front of him, Jerry Colquitt, broke his leg in the first game of the season. Maybe I’m wrong about Brandon. I hope I am and he turns out to be a Heisman winner and HOF QB. Time will tell.

Peyton started every game after Florida his freshman season.

Colquitt started the first game against UCLA (ironically), and got hurt. Then Todd Helton started the next few games, and got hurt against Florida. They held him out after that to protect his baseball future.

That left Peyton to start, and the coaches gave Brandon Stewart a serious or two each game through the end of the season. Stewart was good, too, but he transferred at the end of that season leaving it all to Peyton.

But, they really dialed back the playbook that freshman year.

Okay. Thanks for refreshing my memory. I do remember now that you’ve reminded me. Has any freshman QB started regularly since Peyton?

Re:that last paragraph

I seem to remember similar things being said about a certain tall, lanky kid we were trying to give $8 million to a few years ago

The reality turned out to be a bit different than the bill of goods we were sold didn't it?
