That and my 30 year old lifeguard training is why I never dive into the lake when I can’t see anyone’s feet kicking below the surface.

He's presumably referring to limited visibility. With trees and all kind of other things down in a lake, you need visibility to ensure that you don't get entangled.

Its an indication the water is too cloudy, and may be hiding hard obstructions. Tree limbs, rocks, a sunken Jon boat... what have you.

Sadly it happens a lot. Most of the instances that I know of were caused by dudes saying "Hold my beer, watch this" when the boat had drifted into shallow water.
