Why would you take a chance on someone with no prior coaching experience when you are a program as attractive as Tennessee women's basketball? And can someone explain this need so many fans have to hire someone with ties to Tennessee? It makes no sense to me.I'll take Kara Lawson and call it a HUGE get. I know she has not coached before but the lady certainly knows the game and has the fire and credibility to back it up.
Kara Lawson
Current job: TV analyst
Lawson has no college coaching experience, but she's long been a name on Lady Vols fans' radar, thanks to her continued involvement in the sport and UT.
Lawson was a standout guard under legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, helping the Lady Vols make a pair of Final Four appearances. She played 13 seasons in the WNBA and won an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. in 2008. She began her broadcasting career while her playing career was active. She currently a broadcasts games for ESPN and is the color analyst for the Washington Wizards.
Lawson was appointed to UT's Board of Trustees in 2018, and she is one of three members on UT's special committee on athletics.
She is my 1st phone call. After that maybe Walz or Harper. 2nd fiddle to Kara IMHO. Just something about her that I feel she would be the next Pat Summit. Pat's 1st job was at UT! Just saying!

Steve Kerr didn't have to recruit. There are examples you can point to where a former player took over as a college head coach without any prior coaching experience at any level and went on to a successful career but it's still taking a chance that Tennessee shouldn't have to take right now.Steve Kerr didn't have any coaching experience. That turned out ok.

That's conjecture. It didn't sell at NC State, which is a quality program. Wes Moore has done a much better job there than she did. This would be taking a risk that the University of Tennessee women's basketball program shouldn't have to take. Tennessee has the resources (tradition, fan support, facilities, budget and high profile) to hire a coach who has proven themselves in a major conference (SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac 12, Big 12, Big East). Kellie Jolly Harper has not.Her knowledge and fire would sell to recruits.
More importantly Tennessee Lady Vols don’t need to say much else.
You do realize the statement was about Kara and not Kellie...........That's conjecture. It didn't sell at NC State, which is a quality program. If you go to the thread, Raoul says Kelly Harper is new Lady Vols Coach, on page 5, there is a small bio of Kellie Harper which includes much of her coaching experience.Kellie Jolly was a very good point guard during the Pat Summitt hey day of 1995-1999 and I have tons of respect for that... but she should be evaluated just on her coaching resume which includes an unsuccessful stint at NC State. If Tennessee doesn't limit their search to coaches with ties to the program, they could do better.
So you prefer Kellie and her husband hire hot looking assistants versus people with coaching experience. If it's not Walz then Kellie is my choice! Here would be my staff
HC- Kellie Harper
Asst- Jon Harper (Kellie's husband), has been on her staff at MSU, NC State and Western Carolina
Asst- Candace Parker
Asst- Jasmine Lister from UConn or former Lady Vol Kortney Dunbar
I don't need to review her bio... I'm familiar with her time at Western Carolina and Missouri State. I also think Tennessee should strive to hire a coach who has proven themselves in a major conference. I don't think Kellie Jolly Harper's resume as a coach stands out... She is being touted primarily because she is so fondly remembered as a former player during Summitt's best run. I understand and respect that but Tennessee doesn't have to take a chance on someone who has already been fired. They can do better. If you go to the thread, Raoul says Kelly Harper is new Lady Vols Coach, on page 5, there is a small bio of Kellie Harper which includes much of her coaching experience.![]()

Cause we did on a lady named Pat Summitt! Anytime you can hire someone from the family you do it!Why would you take a chance on someone with no prior coaching experience when you are a program as attractive as Tennessee women's basketball? And can someone explain this need so many fans have to hire someone with ties to Tennessee? It makes no sense to me.
Yea It sounds just like something we need is a coach that was fired at NC State, and has done very little in a conference that is no where close to the SEC. Give us a break and hire a proven Coach. Stop acting like an ignorant Athletic Director and do your jobIf it's not Walz then Kellie is my choice! Here would be my staff

You left out the most important person on the staff - current assistant Shoronna Reaves - all those fantastic classes are her results. We do not need a person from U Conn either. Next Parker is not going to take it...so bring back K. Elzy from Kentucky...defense...she left because she clashed with Warick.
