A friend of mine's dad had one of these Austin Healy MKIII's when we were in late high school - sweet ride.

Honestly, I'd have to say the best-handling car I've ever been in is my friend's supercharged Miata with some suspension upgrades.

I swear, put a competent driver behind the wheel of that and it will waste any stock boxster anywhere.

Please forgive me if I sound overly boastful, but I currently have a slightly warmed up Miata, and I have yet to be beat by a Boxster on the "Snake", US 421. It's the stretch that starts about 10 miles from Bristol and goes to Mountain City, not for the faint at heart. I can tell you guys are the exceptions, but most Porsche drivers are not near being as good as the car. I'm sure any decent driver in a Cayman could wax me easily. I really like the Cayman. The Miata is incredible in the twisties, just needs more umph. I think the Cayman is the best looking Porsche since the 944 Turbo.

I particularly enjoy catching a sportbike on 421, they don't have a prayer if I can get far enough ahead before any of the few straights.

I think the problem with the Boxster in a situation like that could be how the power gets made. I had an older model Miata that wasn't as fast but spooled up faster from low RPMs - basically it had a more forgiving powerband for the speeds you can realistically drive on a tight mountain road. The base Box I have needs to be at about 3500rpms to make any decent power from 4K to 7K is pretty awesome but it's hard to keep there in a really tight situation since the gears are pretty long (5spd that will top out over 150mph). Where they shine is on a moderate to tight road course that has room to hit triple digit speeds.

I'm not an expert driver but I do know my stock Box handles better than any stock Miata I've driven. That being said, being fast comes from a combination of factors and I'm could see being beaten by a Miata depending on the driver and the particular road.

Most importantly, each of the cars is fun to drive. A Miata is probably the best bang for the buck roadster in the history of mankind.

Absolutely! Don't get me wrong, I'd take a Porsche any day over the Miata, but as far as giggles for the buck, it's hard to beat. I came to the realization several years ago after owning Mustangs, Supra Turbo, 389 Pontiac, that the real fun is side Gs. Anyone can go fast in a straight line.

She is wrong. The Boxster would be a good LA car as you don't have to sit in a lot of traffic (the clutch is pretty firm). If you were to get the Tiptronic (auto), you definitely should consider the "S" model.

Boxsters in good shape and low mileage can be had relatively cheap (20k and under).

You either have an awfully young GF or she is probably afraid you'll be too much of a chick magnet with a Boxster. I say go for it, the memories of a great car outlast those of the average GF. You can always find a new GF if you need to, a task made easier with a Boxster.

When we had our first child, our "fleet" consisted of a Triumph TR-7, Toyota pickup (no jumpseat), 550 Suzuki MC and a Maico 400 MX bike. By then my wife was used to my impracticalness, when we got married, I had a 250Suzuki X-6 and a Bultaco 250 dirt bike, no car. Borrowed a buddies 69 Camaro 396 Rally Sport w/375hp to get married. Damn near killed us both driving over 421 to Boone, NC where we got hitched. You could smoke the tires in 3rd gear.

I've got experience with this.

Had to sell the Boxster 3 years ago when my son was born.

I'm with RB on this one, get the car...
