Obviously, Tennessee tops the list as the Volunteers with Davy Crockett and his trusty sidekick Smokey, a blue tick coonhound named after our beautiful mountains. It doesn't get any more relevant than that.

But how do the rest rank? Mine...

2. Florida Gators - A fierce reptile indigenous to the swamps of Florida.

3. Ole Miss Rebels - Sure everyone in the south was a rebel at the time of the civil war but the name embodies the state.

4. Kentucky Wildcats - Native to the area and can get pissed off pretty easily but will typically run at first sign of danger. Sounds about right.

5. Vanderbilt Commodores - Named after the sobriquet Commodore who provided the initial gift to found Vanderbilt University, which is named in his honor.

6. Texas A&M Aggies - The school was initially founded as an agricultural school

7. Alabama Crimson Tide - Crimson is the color and the fact students going to games looked like a wave of red. But an elephant? Beats a tampon I guess...

8. South Carolina Gamecocks - Chicken fighting in SC, I can believe that.

9. Arkansas Razorbacks - Lot's of hogs in Arkansas, sure I can believe that too. Name comes from after a hard fought battle against LSU in which they were said to play like a "wild band of Razorback hogs" by former coach Hugo Bezdek.

10. Georgia, Miss St Bulldogs - Not very original IMO, but it's something I guess.

11. Auburn, LSU, Missouri Tigers - Not original at at and not native to their respective geography.

Mississippi State started out as Mississippi A&M. It was the agricultural school of Mississippi. Kentucky was once known as Transylvania College.

Ole Miss' mascot is a black bear. If there are black bears in Mississippi they're in a zoo. Very unoriginal.

Auburn should officially declare "War Eagles" as their nickname and mascot. That sounds 1000x cooler than simply Tigers.

Out of all the nicknames/mascots in the SEC I still think "Gamecock" is the worst, for obvious reasons. Plus no one should have poultry as the symbol of their sports teams.

Actually, UARKs mascot doesn't come from students - it's from a high school. In fact, it's from a special high school in my hometown of Texarkana, which literally is built on the borders of Texas and Arkansas.

Arkansas High School is the Razorbacks - they are the same red as UARK. In the 1910s the Razorback was chosen to replace their previous Mascot, the Cardinal. In return for using this, AHS got some equipment from UARK.

Side note: there is a HUGE cross town rivalry of Arkansas High vs Texas High. Arkansas v Texas may lay dormant, but it lives on in this small town....

What? I think you may be under the assumption that they are only in the mountains.

When GT was in the SEC they were either called: The Engineers,The Golden Tornado(in honor of the 1928 team) or the Yellow Jackets. I like The Golden Tornado better.

I just googled it. They say there are estimated to be 50 bears living in Mississippi.

It'd be a lot more authentic if they were called the Ole Miss Armadillos
