Obviously, Tennessee tops the list as the Volunteers with Davy Crockett and his trusty sidekick Smokey, a blue tick coonhound named after our beautiful mountains. It doesn't get any more relevant than that.
But how do the rest rank? Mine...
2. Florida Gators - A fierce reptile indigenous to the swamps of Florida.
3. Ole Miss Rebels - Sure everyone in the south was a rebel at the time of the civil war but the name embodies the state.
4. Kentucky Wildcats - Native to the area and can get pissed off pretty easily but will typically run at first sign of danger. Sounds about right.
5. Vanderbilt Commodores - Named after the sobriquet Commodore who provided the initial gift to found Vanderbilt University, which is named in his honor.
6. Texas A&M Aggies - The school was initially founded as an agricultural school
7. Alabama Crimson Tide - Crimson is the color and the fact students going to games looked like a wave of red. But an elephant? Beats a tampon I guess...
8. South Carolina Gamecocks - Chicken fighting in SC, I can believe that.
9. Arkansas Razorbacks - Lot's of hogs in Arkansas, sure I can believe that too. Name comes from after a hard fought battle against LSU in which they were said to play like a "wild band of Razorback hogs" by former coach Hugo Bezdek.
10. Georgia, Miss St Bulldogs - Not very original IMO, but it's something I guess.
11. Auburn, LSU, Missouri Tigers - Not original at at and not native to their respective geography.
