Most overrated Vol

He was the winningest QB in NCAA history when he graduated from Tennessee. Peyton is in the top five all time Vols.
Okay, here is one and I am going to absolutely cringe after I type it.

Peyton Manning.

Don't get me wrong, I actually really like the guy but his legacy and his reality at UT were two very disparate things.

Never beat Florida, destroyed by Nebraska, one SEC championship, lost to Memphis. As a student at UT I used to watch him in games and notice that when he was pressured or sacked it felt like the team just gave up on the whole series.

The guy was very very good, no doubt, but if we are talking about overrated (the difference between hype and performance) I think he should be on the list.

I know this is blasphemy but I would rather have Tee Martin (who exceeded expectations) than P. Manning who never quite lived up to the (unfair?) hype that was placed on him.

Compared to the unfair hype surrounding any QB ESPN wants to hop on these days, I think Peyton's hype was much more fair. I was willing to just ignore your comment.

I agree with your assertion about ESPN and their hype. I still believe that the media blatantly influenced Manning not getting a Heisman.

But, let me try to illustrate my point this way: If you could have Peyton's best year repeated or Tee Martin's best year repeated, which would you choose?

For all of the love that Peyton gets from us Vols (and most of it is rightfully earned for his loyal, faithful service and ambassadorship of the university) I bet very few would choose all of Peyton's records vs. Tee Martin's BCS trophy. That is my point.

Peyton. Played a more talented team only 4 times in his career here. Lost all 4. Ran up huge numbers against inferior competition.

Joey Matthews, James Banks, Jabari Davis, and Chris Hannon

I remember John Adams telling Jimmy Hyams on the radio before Chris Hannons senior year that he has first round talent. Way to go Mr. Adams. As always you have all the right things to say.

LMAO!

Did anyone else hear this?

"The Pittsburgh defense holds twice, despite deep penetration by Denver"

Clearly, i would take a bcs trophy over record breaking career, but you have to admit the 98 team was extremely lucky all year. Tee loved to throw the ball into the dirt. In the opening game against syracuse, we get bailed out with a pass interference call to give us a chance to win.

Stoerner's fumble goes down as the strangest ending to a game.

Peyton never beat FL, but there is a reason he was a finalist for the heisman. He was great every year except against very good FL teams. I dont think losing to FL is enough to call him overrated.

I don't know if I would call the 1998 team "lucky" by going undefeated any more than I would call the 2011 team "unlucky". Sometimes breaks go your way, sometimes they don't. The difference is that a talented well prepared team can capitalize off of those breaks and a less prepared team won't. Arky's "fumble" in 1998 would have not cost them the victory if UT had not had a player there to pounce on it, right? If memory serves, UT was leading on the score board regardless of the fumble.
