Most Hated Opposing Coaches

What's so amazing is that as much as Donnan didn't work out, he was like day and night compared to Ray Goff. Talk about a guy being in over his head!?

Donnan had some of the most talented teams at UGA - look at how many of them are studs in the NFL and he couldn't do squat with them.

Can we quit talking about the 90's I am starting to have an anxiety attack. Goff (while a great man) just couldn't put it together at all.

Agreed his lack of discipline and inabality to formulate an effective offense was mind boggeling with the talent that surrounded them.

Please name some or all of these "NFL studs" you are talking about. Hines Ward is the only UGA guy who comes to mind.

It's not all that uncommon. See: Tennessee 2005.

Champ Bailey isn't bad either.

I got this one

Champ Baily
Robert Edwards
Patrick Pass
Matt Stichcomb
Marcus Stroud
Richard Seymore
Kendrell Bell
Quincy Carter

To name a few.

i will rephrase from studs to NFL Caliber talent - not all of these guys are pro bowlers but most are solid contributors and were great college players.

Champ Bailey- Broncos
Hines Ward - Steelers
Kendrell Bell - Chiefs
Ben Watson - patriots
Randy McMichael - Dolphins
Richard Seymour - Patriots

all of these were donnan's recruits and that is a lot of talent that are either starters or 2nsd string NFL players. he should have won a lot more games during his tenure. Now I am sure we can list the UT and UF guys from this era and come up with a pretty good list on their own - maybe that explains why they didn't do as well as they should have in those years - oh well.

A couple of those guys were there in Richt's first year, which wasn't great. Does that mean he also failed to get the most out of them?

Quincy Carter, Matt Stichcomb, and Patrick Pass? If those guys are "NFL studs," then Roseanne is Miss America.

you left off
Patrick Pass Patriots
Robert Edwars- Was outstanding for the Broncos till he tore his knee apart at the Pro Bowl
Matt Stichcomb-Started for the Raiders and Bucs till a back problem sidedlined him.

Your right about UT's and UF's talent in this time period but sadly thats not the only teams we lost to during Donnan's time at UGA. We consistently lost to teams with less talent on both sides of the ball.

Didn't Richt punt in their bowl game that year when they were down by one score with under a minute to play? He's a pretty good coach, but occasionally he makes some idiotic decisions. Another instance is the way he managed the clock at the end of the UT-UGA game in 2004.

Not denying that. Quincy definatley was not a stud (Cocaine is a hell of a drug) but he did play well for the Big Tuna when he was given the opportunity Pass and Stinchcomb both have contributed for their respective teams and all of these guys could have been All SEC had been place in the right environment and coaching. But the argument is that he definatley had top level SEC talent and coached them to mediocracy.

No but anytime you change coaches you will have a let down - besides - he still beat us with those some of the same players - that was something Donnan couldn't do. My point is that he had a lot of really good talent and still lost games that he shouldn't have lost.

From a talent standpoint, he generally finished exactly where he should have, 3rd in the East.

Your right he has made some call at times that caused me to yell violently, but he is a young head coach and you cant deny his record.

Realy? I don't remember OU going backwards when Bob Stoops replaced John Blake. Donnan beat UT in 2000. So Richt simply did what Donnan had done the year before.

Randy McMichael was certainly still at UGA in 2001.

Well when you go from 12-22 over 3 years you have no where to go but up. That is not the seam kind of coaching change - that was necessity (sp?). The Donnan/Richt exchange was a different animal - he was let go b/c he couldn't beat the perrenial contenders in the SEC - one win doesn't make him Master of UT - he was 1 for 5 against us and UF. Richt has raised the bar a bit and has only one loss to us - he hasn't figured out UF yet but I think his time will come. They have won 2 SEC titels since he took over so saying comparing him to donnan is a little off.

Watson and McMichael were there in '01 but that was their last season so they did play for Donnan for a majority of their collegiate career.
