If you're surprised I'm a fan of Donnan, you obviously don't know his background. He was one of the key staff members of the OU teams of the mid '80s. Had OU promoted him instead of Garry Gibbs, the Sooners would have never gone in the tank.

Gary Gibbs was clearly a dumb move by the Sooners, I'm not sure that Donnan would have been the answer either.

Maybe . . . but Donnan proved to be just awful at the public relations part of the job. I think he would have gotten a couple more year at UGA if a few more people had just liked him.

I think this should be the most feared coaches to play as opposed to most hated.
In the SEC the top 3 are pretty obvious

1. Richt
2. Spurrier
3. Tubberville

I really can't think of a coach that I "hate". There have been some like Terry Bowden, Lou Holtz and Jackie Sherrill that I have found extremely annoying . . . but not hate.

ahhh, back on your favorite topic of Manning.
Just making a point. Without Donnan, Fulmer has one SEC championship in his tenure at Tennessee.

I have a good friend that coached with Majors and Sherrill who tells me he likes Jackie very much. Couldn't stand Johnny.

I don't think he's really a bad guy, but he's a little difficult to listen to. That ego is REALLY big.

20 years from now, people will look back on the amount of success Sherrill had at MSU in amazement.

i've actually respect Holtz for the NC he won at Notre Dame. He seemed to have more character then some of the other coaches and he started at the bottom coaching in high school.

I never cared for the way Sherill used to jump on his players on the sidelines. He used to tear them up on the sidelines when they screwed up.

I agree, just leave it to you to pull in Manning to a conversation about hated coaches.

I wish the SEC had about 10 Jim Donnans.

The hatred of excellence on this board never ceases to amaze me.

Don't take this stuff too seriously because I don't. These are all very good coaches which at one time or another have seriously annoyed me only because of my love for the Vols. Just as my "love" for the Gators. Why. Because they are a very good team with a very good coach that beat us last year. Roll with the punches.

"Character?" Holtz has had at least one major scandal/NCAA investigation everywhere he's coached.

Exactly . . . I'll never understand how that guy achieved the stature he did when he basically just craps all over the place wherever he coaches and then leaves. He's probably got whiplash from looking the other way so much.

People cut him slack because he plays the "Poor Little Ol' Lou" act to the hilt. He's far more corrupt than coaches, past and present, most of the people on this board call "cheaters" on a regular basis.

A 6-14 record against Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and Georgia Tech was Donnan's downfall. Also, Dog fans expect more than 2 Outback Bowls, a Peach Bowl and an Oahu Bowl, even if you are following one of the worst coaches in the SEC, Ray Goof.

Amen to that. If you are a coach at UGA you have to beat GT first and foremost. If you cant get that done then, well you know the rest. Plus Donnan tended to show Favortism towards player (i.e. Quincy Carter) who in turn caused Nate Hyble to transfer to OK where he led them to a MNC.

Hybl did not lead OU to a National Championship in 2000. Josh Huepel was the QB.
