i was in tears (literally) after that game. Now granted i was 11 at the time, but still.
I was 11 as well. I cried too was so upset we def had the better team and just played a stinker of a game. My dad said Majors got too conservative and tight and played not too lose.

2001 without a doubt. That single game changed the trajectory of this program.

I was at that game. Starting QB and RB knocked out for LSU. Somehow, primarily fumbles, cost UT the game. The group I was with and I left totally shell-shocked.

The win at FLA the weekend before was such an emotion eater. Everyone was still talking about it on Thursday just before Saturday's game.

Seems like any time a backup comes into a game against us, he becomes a legend. Backups scare hell outta me.

We have had a ton of them in the last 20 or so years but for me it’s gotta be the 2001 SEC title game for me against LSU with a trip to the Rose bowl on the line for us to play for the national championship. We blow a 17-7 lead and get outscored 24-3 enroute to a 31-20 loss and Chavis and our defense couldn’t adjust to a simple up the middle QB run by Matt Mauck. We also accelerated Saban’s rise to power as he won his first SEC title.

That’s the first game that came to mind for me, too.

I have to say the loss to Tiger High School, I mean Memphis State is top 5 along with Wyoming, Georgia State, 2001 LSU and there are another 10 that are tied for 5th place (OU, Dooley LSU, NC, ND, Etc)
Agree. Memphis. Still think return guy had his knee down. But so many to choose from. There are loses, every program has them. But we should not have as many as we have had. Hope CJH puts those behind us.

Amen! I was there and still have nightmares from it!

This thread seems to get started every year. Hard to put any loss in the past 20 years up there given that we have so many losses in the 90s that kept us from winning a championship.
90 bama because talent wise that was majors best team and if we win the notre dame game several weeks later may have been a #1 vs #2 matchup.
92 arkansas has to rank up there because it brought the beginning of the end of the coach majors. #4 ranking with eventual champs bama scheduled in 2 weeks playing against a terrible arkansas team first year in the sec and we find a way to lose.
We find a way to beat florida in 93, tiger high in 96, and arkansas in 99 and we may be playing for a title in all of those years.

. 1996 Memphis and it’s not even close. Worst loss in school history.[/QUOTE. I think your right it was def Fulmers worst loss right there with Wyoming. I was at that game and it was the Super bowl celebration for the Memphis fans after they won and Memphis had only won 3 games coming into that game. 26 years later nearly I still can’t believe we lost that game with that talented team and Peyton at QB just mind boggling that it happened.

I agree 2001 LSU was the most impactful, but for me personally it was Georgia State. I just sat there in the stands stunned wondering how this could have happened.

Memphis St.
Wyoming
Ga. St.
The Wyoming game I almost consider a throwaway. It was the saturday after Fulmer was fired and the team played like crap in protest. Yes any loss sucks but considering the circumstances surrounding it, I almost dont even consider that loss as "real" if you get what Im saying. The season was already in the crapper and we werent playing for anything at that point. Any other week and we destroy them.

The early 2000 SEC championship game to LSU. Winning would have sent us to the Rose Bowl for the NC. I thought and said the loss and the way we played set the program back 10 years. Turns out to be much longer>>>>

That’s mine also. that loss cost me a trip to the Rose Bowl. Brothers and I were already discussing arrangements for our trip to Pasadena🤬

SECCG 2001 vs LSU was biggest but at that point I don't know that it hit as hard as some others because I thought we would continue to be top contenders. Looking back it makes you realize the gravity of the loss and how hard it will be to get that shot again.

Pig's fumble was UGA and I was sitting right in front of it. That was a tough one

. We were so confident going into that game my dad was doing the same already making plans to go to the Rose Bowl. It was the worst hangover after a loss the next morning when we left Atlanta to head home that I’ve ever experienced as a Tennessee fan.

I was able to watch the Jonathan Crompton vs. LSU game in Neyland 24-28. It sucked partly because we were gifted those tickets and sit just below LSU fans in the upper deck south-end zone. I remember thinking Crompton looked good rolling out and throwing until we just stopped doing it.
Watching it on TV; it's LSU under Dooley. Like everyone else, I thought when the ref's said, "The game has ended" it was over until it wasn't.
Georgia State was probably the biggest embarrassment.

I got to see several of them in person.
- 1996 vs Florida and Memphis
- 2002 vs Florida
- 2015 vs Oklahoma
- 2016 vs Vandy

It’s all relative. Some losses keep you out of the National title race (89 Bama, 90 ND/Bama, 95 Florida, 2001 LSU). Others keep you from being relevant (2009 Bama, 2015 Oklahoma/Florida). Others just embarrassing (1996 Memphis, 2008 Wyoming, 2011 Kentucky, 2019 Georgia St).

As far as what was on the line, the LSU loss is probably the worst.

The last one is always the most disappointing!

Boy decades of painful losses condensed into one thread. Most seem to have come since the turn of the century.
