Most Disappointing loss

2001 LSU is 1 on my list
2A and 2B are USC and Vandy in 2016 - we should have easily won those and been finally returning to the SECCG

2001 SECCG --- of course.

Other stingers:

99 game vs Florida. Sweep with Jamal on 4th and 3? Terrible paly call.

Dooley's 13 man game vs LSU.

This past years Ole Miss loss stung pretty good.

A&M in 2016. A whirlwhind game of swinging emotion. My entire family was exhausted after that one.

2015 vs Florida. That famous Butch clock management at the end. 2 kicks to win it. f*** me.

There are two losses that didn't break my heart but they royally pissed me off to the point where I was visibly shaking!

1.) Butch Jones' loss to Vanderbilt in his first season against Franklin. We had absolutely no business losing that game! He coached scared in that game and it showed! I was so pissed off after that loss because a win would've gotten us bowl eligible that year.

2.) Pruitt's year 2 loss against Georgia State. It wasn't a fluky loss either. GA State beat the ever loving hell out of our team physically. Most embarrassing loss of my lifetime hands down!

I'm thinking a tea-bagging, tree-killing, sucker-punching Bammer.
No chance. I eat Bammers for lunch. In high school after Bama beat us 17-13 in Knoxville the year was 1994 I believe. I keyed a guys truck at school after all the crap he had been talking then ragging on me after they beat us. I told him your new truck your daddy bought you is going to get effed up lol and sure enough I did just that took a screwdriver right down the side of it. I hate Bammers. The next year me and a couple other guys spray painted 41-14 on the girls basketball coaches truck back window. Yea we got detention for that but it was worth it.

I won't comment about "of all time", but shouldn't this post be on the Vols Baseball site? I'm still sad that the team and fans didn't make it to Omaha. What a great team it was.

I remember back in 1939 we went undefeated (10-0) and unscored upon (212-0) in the regular season and then we go to the Rose bowl and get shutout 14-0 by USC Trojans. That has to be one of the worst losses in Gen Neyland's history as coach of the might Volunteers.

A few others on here mention Georgia State.
I did not because the thread title is most disappointing, not most embarrassing.
Disappointing being we were right there within grasp and just fell short of something great.
Embarrassing being we got drug through the mud, britches pulled down, being spanked the whole way and back.

Ga St should have been the point where Fulmer / Cheeks / Haslam...ANYONE fired Pruitt with just cause for failing to meet his contract obligation of not doing anything to defame the university...should have...sigh

We have had a ton of them in the last 20 or so years but for me it’s gotta be the 2001 SEC title game for me against LSU with a trip to the Rose bowl on the line for us to play for the national championship. We blow a 17-7 lead and get outscored 24-3 enroute to a 31-20 loss and Chavis and our defense couldn’t adjust to a simple up the middle QB run by Matt Mauck. We also accelerated Saban’s rise to power as he won his first SEC title.
Agree. I believe that is the point where the trajectory of the program changed.

Yea no doubt imo. The next season we were pre season number 4 in the polls and a popular pick to win the SEC then we preceded to go 8-5 with a embarassing 30-3 loss to Maryland in the Peach Bowl

2001 SECCG changed the course of our program. Maybe forever. There is NO WAY that LSU team shouldve even been on the field with our team. One of our .ost talented ever.

Gotta wonder if we win that game does Saban still go on to win the BCS title in 2003 and to Bama to win 6 there. That game not only changed the course of our football program but changed the direction of the SEC as well.

How you and your ip address have not been banned by Freak and his moderators as an obvious troll of the Tennessee football program, that's beyond me.

The community are all excited, getting ready for what promises to be a really fun football season ... and things are looking too good for you, so you come up with a hook to the most negative memories possible, and toss it into the midst of us.

None of this is surprising, knowing your history here. What is surprising is that some members of the community, actual Volunteer fans, follow along.

You're a cancer on this community.

I absolutely understand your skepticism. It's hard to imagine that any true Vol fan would want to dwell on past disappointments, especially when we're on the brink of a season that has so much optimism surrounding it.

I could be wrong about him being a troll from another fan base.

What I am definitely right about is the cancer he's bringing to the boards.

The story that supposedly proves his bona fides was odd to me -- keying a rival fan's vehicle. Not the kind of thing I would like to associate with the behavior of Vol fans.

Why dont we all just agree before we make these threads that 2001 was the one that got away. It was a kick in the nuts.

Dont need to remind ourselves every year.

2007 in Georgia Dome was another. Same issues.
