Martinez was not coaching safeties. Banks was.I really think Martinez was on the verge of something special. He lost two NFL caliber DBs and two more were playing (one as a true freshman however). That said, if Safety is also Martinez's responsibility, they were not developing the same. Perhaps that was scheme? Perhaps Martinez needs to focus on coaching corners only? We definitely showed DRASTIC improvements in that position since he took over back there. That all said, KNOWles KNOWS better![]()
Again I’m not going to say Willie is an elite CB coach but he has a lot of transfers that believe he is and are here bc of him. These CBs could have paydays elsewhere as well. Some specifically are here for Martinez. The guy has had jobs at elite programs almost every year he’s been coaching. If he’s looking for a job when he leaves Tennessee there will be one available. He was eyeing retirement a few years ago, so it entirely wouldn’t surprise me if he’s not back. Could be Knowles decision, could be his. You can develop a position really well and still be unsuccessful if the coordinator doesn’t do their job right. Not saying anything one way or the other but I’ll let others decide if they think Banks did his job well last year. Heupel apparently didn’t and no other program thought enough about him to offer a coordinator job.Dude I’ve never claimed to be age appropriate on here. I’ve said this a lot over the years. I blow off steam in here bc I need an outlet from my real life. I work in a super high stress field and find relief valves wherever I can.
I know I was harsh and probably unfair to yalls favorite coach. For that I’m not sorry bc this is a place that fans can be fans. We argue and disagree. And have lively debates. It’s what makes this fun.
My advice, please don’t take me, or yourself too seriously. The last several years of watching mostly bad defense has hurt me. Plus this new era has me questioning how to actually be a fan of what I’m witnessing.
Y’all have a blessed and Merry Christmas goobers
Freshmen, low effort players, slow LBers, crappy tackling. Fundamentally just awful defense. Safety is coaching and we haven’t really prioritized the position imo in the portal. I mean we were terrible but it wasn’t Sunseri bad.Without saying "we had a freshman playing", why was Tennessee's pass defense arguably one of the worst in all of power 4? It's more than just "Tim Banks coached safeties".
It was reminiscent of Sal Sunseri days watching teams pass at will on Tennessee's Secondary (DBs and Safeties).

If Martinez puts McCoy, Hood into the NFL this year and Gibson goes (Redmond is coming along as well), that's 3 NFL guys this year. Then add the work he did with Hadden who was AWFUL at best initially, that's 4, then Slaughter and Gabe-JL (6). That seems uncommon.Martinez was not coaching safeties. Banks was.
Nobody said the defense in general was elite, bozo. They are saying corner play wasn't the issue. Stop playing even dumber than you are. Thanks for chiming in Miss Martinez. If you think what you are watching is elite defense then I can’t help you.
He didn’t develop Hood and McCoy. They were playing great when they got here. They continued to play well and got noticed bc they actually played in “the league”.
Just curious, were you a fan in the 90s when we had dominant defenses? I’m just trying to figure out what folks baselines are.
Portal extended his career.
Weak at DT. Slow at safety. Bad LB play. Pass rush wasn’t there like years past. Couldn’t get pressure with 4. When we blitzed it was easily picked up. Our impact player was supposed to be Boo and he wasn’t mentally with us.
Hence them getting a new coordinator. With crg line coming back down to normal, it could not cover up the mistakes it did last year. Why the whole defense sucked. The dbs have underperformed every year. The line just this yearSorry but coach Gs DL severely underperformed, moreso than WMs CBs, getting gashed up the middle and not setting the edge. It’s not on the cb coach when teams run for 200 yards and have 8 minute drives.
And guess what..in football when you don’t get pressure, your defense can’t cover that long when there isn’t any, on any team at any level.
McCoy isn’t a 1st round pick if it was only about being good with pressure.
