More Possible Staff Changes....

Without saying "we had a freshman playing", why was Tennessee's pass defense arguably one of the worst in all of power 4? It's more than just "Tim Banks coached safeties".

It was reminiscent of Sal Sunseri days watching teams pass at will on Tennessee's Secondary (DBs and Safeties).
Thats the keep it in front of you defense as we drop six 10 yards behind the sticks on 3rd and 3. Or we drop a DT into coverage and leave a true freshman on an island. Or we show zero early and allow the offense to check to the matchup they want, then we don’t get out of it to adjust to their check.
Read, think, react is no way to play at the highest level.

It was always refreshing when we maintained the 12 yard cushion on a 3rd and 8. Then miss the tackle when the 10 yard pass was completed. Brilliant

It’s not always on the players re missed tackles. Coaches need to get them in the right mindset and right places with less grass to cover as they try to close in and make a tackle. If we are already there waiting and anticipating and disrupting, fewer tackles are missed

Some folks say we don’t hit/tackle enough in camp and weekly during season. The only way to improve is getting reps. Probably should address that also. I know it’s hard to commit to doing it. But we know what it looks like when you don’t.

It’s true we don’t do a lot of taking to the ground even in fall camp. IMO we need to and get the bodies more used to it, but it’s easier with talent and depth. We haven’t been talented and deep enough at db or wr to lose a player getting rolled up in practice. We lost 4 safeties from last years team, then McCoy, Gibson and Boo. 7 dbs is a lot to deal with and couldn’t afford losing more in practice.
I think Heup would like to do more but made a judgement call.

The second part of your first comment is precisely the problem for many of our resident, self-anointed experts.

"I know a little something about it"
I hear Freak is putting together a plan to weed out anyone that "don't know the football" and have a website strictly populated by people that "know the football" so everyone can agree with one another and enjoy one big circle jerk.

It has been several years since I’ve read it, but I swear I saw that he was a vol that went on to the NFL, and not just as a practice squad guy.
I’ll let him out himself if he wants.

We’ve got a lot of former players and a few in coaching that post occasionally. I’m just an idiot that goes to a lot of games and knows very little other than what others much wiser than me tell me.

Since most of the practices are closed to the public and the media, I am unable to stay how much they "tackle" in practice and I do not believe posters on this board do either. If indeed they don't it is difficult to understand how we tackle so good two years ago. The major difference in the coaches was Atg linebacker. However, it was the CBs Star, and Safeties who were unable to tackle this year. I saw Freshmen LB laying the wood to ball carriers and wide receivers. the Fall. I did see almost all of the defensive players taking poor angles And trying to strip the ball instead of bringing the runners to the ground. That seems likege in stragtegy rather than ability or lack of tackling in practice.

It’s been discussed on radio call in shows. Not sure if true. But based on the results this year it appears we didn’t practice it much. We have to be careful in criticizing some of this or the football savants on this board won’t like it. We are in a phase

Knowles former players all say that his practices are rough and that he coaches like Garner. Will eat you alive in practice and then give you a hug when its over and encourage. Pretty much all CRGs former players come back to see him regularly and love the guy despite him being a hardass. Legacy players come here too bc their Dads played for Garner. Knowles is supposed to be the same way so we should be much more physical moving forward on defense

Don’t have to agree, but would not mind weeding out those FANS where the majority of their POSITIONS align with the enemy.

Discussing facts and stats is for sure OK, but primarily using them to trash coaches and players, TOTALLY discounting surrounding circumstances and the possibility of improvement, especially for the young and inexperienced is telling.

They are the outliers and exceptional athletes. You are correct the played well but Martinez's total body of work is not complimentary.
The statement was no development and terrible coach. Could some of the issues be miscommunication between the safeties and corners on some pass plays. We will find out if Martinez stays and a new safeties coach arrives. Ricky Gibson and Jermod McCoy we extremely highly ranked corners as well, but I will let you go with the outliers route.

You can’t afford not to have physical practices, it separates the real teams from the others. You can be smart about it and still be physical. That is one area Heupel must realize, the best way to condition your body for physical contact is too have physical contact. The only way to be a good fundamental tackling team is too practice like you play. Shortcuts don’t work, we were young last year so this could have been a lot of the problem. Maybe it had at least some to do with it. But nonetheless, it’s time for our players to develop their bodies and get into the playbooks. GBO

Read, think, react is no way to play at the highest level That defense would have been better if our LBs and secondary could tackle. Remember, we miss way too many tackles when we had hands on the ball carrier.

I agree that a lot of fans/posters don’t like the truth.

I agree that a lot of fans/posters don’t like the truth.
Unfortunately, the interpretation of the truth is well above the pay grade of many. They select the facts of choice without the benefit of sitting in staff meetings where the risk/reward of all the alternates are weighted and decisions made.

To ASSUME that practice plans were based on preferences is simplistic and juvenile. BUT they jump on board a concept with those pesky declarative sentences. They are of course free to display that level of arrogance playing with documented facts, BUT……,, agendas become documented facts too. Click on user names and review their post history, even across topics and formulate your own fact based assessment of the value add net of their fandom.
