Across from the incredibly-accomplished Prescott in the SEC is Josh Dobbs. Only a junior with just over a year’s starting experience under his belt at Tennessee, Dobbs is far away from reaching the 10,000 career total yardage mark that Prescott eclipsed last week, but he represents an intriguing prospect if he chooses to come out for the 2016 draft. Dobbs has a smaller frame than Prescott and so his threat as a runner is strictly as a speed option, but he excels in that category and can beat a cornerback around the edge with ease. But he’s not just a sprinter playing quarterback, he’s also one of the smartest prospects the professional ranks will get their hands on in the next couple of years.

A 4.0 student in high school who’s majoring in Aerospace Engineering, Dobbs has all the mental tools to succeed at the highest level and that’s been evident in Butch Jones’ spread offense at Tennessee. A comparable quarterback, Marcus Mariota, played in a spread offense similar to that that the Volunteers run, and a knock on Mariota coming out of college was that he threw to his first read all too often. With Dobbs, he’s displayed a matured ability to hit second and third reads consistently, and with the athleticism to go with his football IQ, Dobbs can be a legitimate NFL starter someday.

If Josh keeps improving on his consistency like he has the past 2 games, he could go into 2016 as one of the top QB prospects for the 2017 draft.

He needs to stay for his senior year, but his draft stock will be very high in 2017.

If he goes NFL over NASA, I expect he will eclipse all of Peyton's records by the end of his career.

Would that make him a hero or pantomime villain on VN?

That article is very complimentary of Dobbs, but I honestly don't think he has shown the arm to play at the next level. Watching Mariota in his first game with the Titans it was evident to me that his arm strength and accuracy are well beyond Dobbs.

Whenever he does declare, he will be one of those prospects that climbs and climbs up the rankings leading up to the draft

I'm glad he's UT's QB but his consistency has to improve before he gets a serious look at the NFL.

If Dobbs plays in the NFL he has to stay another year to improve on accuracy. He does look better this year going through his progressions. If Cromp Daddy can get drafted so can Dobbs.

Dobbs has a very good arm. I don't know why people think he has poor arm strength? He can throw the ball hard across the field on throwbacks, he also has a fairly quick release. I think his problems are with accuracy and decision making at times. I glad he's our QB, and I think he will be really good next year, so he really needs to hang around.

You can't really think this.

No way he leaves this year unless he graduates in December but even then I would see him coming back for a masters degree while its free to him. This guy knows that his schooling will give him the career that he really wants abd thats building airplanes.

I couldn't disagree more on arm strength. Dobbs arm is as strong as they come. Did you not watch the South Carolina game? Andre Ware (former heisman winning QB) was gushing over his arm strength. Especially on a deep out to Josh Smith from the opposite hash.

Plus there was the bomb against Kentucky when he threw the ball nearly 60 yards in the air on a rope to Josh Malone. And the accurately thrown bomb to Malone against South Carolina that was dropped.

Dobbs accuracy needs to improve (like every young QB) but his arm is NFL ready when it comes to strength.

I don't think anyone has suggested he's leaving this year. The writer is just theorizing.

Dobbs will return for his senior year. I made this thread just to say he's already on the pro radar and he could blow up next year if we have the championship run many expect.

So many of his passes are dropped, plain and simple. Yes, he missed some rather badly, but all QBs do to some degree.

I see his draft stock rising or falling depending on which teams/coaches are selecting in what order. Many teams are set up for the Brady/Manning model and some others are willing to go with the Vick/Newton style. In other words, it will be situationally dependent.

Anyone who thinks Dobbs is not going to stay and get his degree is crazy. Would love to see him get drafted after next year though!

He's definitely staying. He won't get a 1st round grade this year. And as a QB its dumb to leave early unless you're going in the 1st.

If JRM stays, 2017 draft could be Vols heavy at the top. Dobbs, Hurd, Barnett, and JRM could go in the 1st and 2nd rounds. Along with possibly Josh Malone and Justin Martin if they have huge years in 2016. Both have the physical measureables NFL teams dream of.

I really like Dobbs and wish him the best of luck but I will be astonished if he gets drafted. Way to inaccurate IMHO. NFL these days does have some running QB's but they still have to be accurate. Even in his best games this year Josh had trouble completing some very routine passes.

Cool story, bro post but there's no chance Dobbs leaves early. We've had a few classes together and it seems he's actually a bit behind as far as course hours go. Not like it's a bad thing but he'll need either 4.5/ 5 years to get his degree. Considering it would've guaranteed him another year, he seemed a bit annoyed having to burn his redshirt.

Just needs to get his feet set and hips turned correctly, ball in position for a quick release. Playing extremely well this year, but as a senior he will excel.

The only issue Dobbs has is his consistency and deep ball accuracy. His actual arm strength is good, he's fast, he's elusive, he's smart, and he's a leader. He has better draft stock than a lot of people think. If a coach looks at him and goes "I bet I can improve his consistency" he will probably go fairly high.

I totally agree, but having said that I too am so glad that he is a Vol. He represents all that is good about College Athletics. His acronym will be NASA not NFL. I'm not even sure he wants to play in the league honestly!
