Yep. Thatā€™s a stretch. There were some Astros fans floating the same boat regarding Verlander. That cutting edge ā€œin beforeā€ is a strong emotional addiction.

Kershaw has the best career ERA in the live ball era with a 2.54 and is tied with Pedro Martinez for best adjusted ERA+ in baseball ...

No one said it was ******. He's one of the 10 best LHP since integration.

Verlander has more pennants, more World Series rings, better postseason career, was more dominant for a longer period of time than Kershaw was. Kershaw was done being a prime pitcher by age 32. Verlander won a Cy Young at 39. I'd rather have his career.

MLB Approves Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System for 2026 Season

......today's announcement from Major League Baseball (MLB). The league's 11-member Joint Competition Committee voted to implement an Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) systemā€”often referred to as "robot umpires"ā€”starting in the 2026 season across spring training, regular season, and postseason games. However, it's not a full replacement for human umpires: Plate umpires will continue to make initial calls on balls and strikes, with teams able to challenge them via the automated system.

Key Details of the System
  • How Challenges Work: Each team gets two challenges per game (with one additional challenge per extra inning). Challenges must be initiated immediately (within 2 seconds) by the pitcher, catcher, or batter signaling via a tap on their helmet or capā€”no dugout input allowed. Successful challenges are retained; unsuccessful ones are lost.
  • Review Process: The ABS uses camera and radar technology (similar to Hawk-Eye in tennis) to track pitch trajectory against a batter-specific strike zone (calibrated to each player's height). Reviews average about 17 seconds and will display digital graphics on stadium videoboards and broadcasts.
  • Impact on the Game: This is expected to reduce ejections significantly, as 61.5% of ejections in 2024 and 60.3% in 2025 (through September 22) stemmed from ball/strike disputes. It preserves the human element while correcting high-leverage errors.
Background and TestingThe ABS has been refined over years in the minors:
  • Debuted in the independent Atlantic League (2019 All-Star Game) and Arizona Fall League.
  • Full implementation in Low-A (2021), Triple-A (2022 onward).
  • In 2025 Triple-A games, teams averaged 4.2 challenges per game with a 49.5% success rate (defenses: 53.7%; offenses: 45%).
The vote wasn't unanimousā€”some of the four player representatives opposed itā€”but MLB owners (with a 6-4 majority) pushed it through. Commissioner Rob Manfred praised it as "striking the right balance" between umpires' role and accuracy.

This hybrid approach addresses fan and player frustrations with inconsistent calls without overhauling the game's pace or traditions. Full ABS (robots calling every pitch) remains a possibility down the line, but for now, humans stay in the hot seat.

Challenge system is worse than full ABS for pace of play.

If this ever comes to the college game, I hope they skip this stupid intermediate step and just straight out go to getting the calls right every time. I'm so done with umps affecting the result so much, give me a pure pitcher batter battle, please.

Pace of play is fine and vastly improved. Seems fair to expect this to be pretty seamless, even if it's a bit silly.

4 pitches per game in the balance!

We just cut 30 minutes from average game time. We can spare 2 minutes/game to make sure the umpires aren't affecting pennant races
