Miles or Jones

Hard to talk about moral victories when they actually won a title

The only reason they had an opportunity to win a title was because they got lucky and there was no one else in the BCS ranking ahead of them.

Every other year in the BCS ranking they would've been left out.

My point is that the fact that the losses were in OT helped them make the title game over other teams with similar records. But on the moral victories point, is the converse of that not exactly what you're doing when you say, "Yes they won a championship, BUT..."

I'm not sure where you're going with this.

My main problem with all of the praise that Les Miles gets is the fact that he never built a program. LSU was a powerhouse when he took over. He maintained success at a level close to what Saban had established - close, but not at the same level.

His previous head coaching record at Oklahoma State was not very impressive.

I think he's a good coach but not much more than that. His record is very similar to Fulmer's in that respect.

He benefits from the fertile recruiting grounds of Louisiana. Nearly every elite player from that state goes to LSU over other schools.

The goal is to win a National Championship.

Name a head coach who won a NC after starting over at age 62...

If Butch bails for Va Tech would love to see Miles here. Put that man with a couple of good coordinators and he'll win championships again

CBJ to Va Tech...why?...lol. so he could lose the Battle of Bristol...lol.

Heard that MSU coach Dan Mullen is in the running if he wants it...we are talking ACC remember.

Where I'm going is to say that a championship is a championship. He went to another one as well. He's not Larry Coker who lucked into one with only one recruiting class of his own.

Oklahoma State was 3-8 when he got there. Fulmer was never put in a situation like that one.

The age "issue" is one of the dumbest recurring themes on VN. Saban is 64. You're telling me that if he switched schools he would just stop winning?

I will take CBJ all day over Les Miles who is the luckiest coach in the history of football.

So what about 3-8. Les didn't win a championship at Oklahoma State so it's apples and oranges to compare that to Fulmer.

Les inherited a better program at LSU from Saban than Fulmer inherited at Tennessee from Majors.

Fulmer went 13-0 to win the BCS.

Miles went 12-2 to win the BCS.

A less talented 2007 Tennessee team took LSU to the wire in the SEC championship game.

Those are facts. Sorry if you don't like them.

I'm sure the comparison has already been made but Miles could be a Fulmer situation.

He's won a NC, SEC championships, had very good teams but in later years just not meeting the hype and expectations. Talent going to "waste."

Weren't you just saying he never built a program? If Butch took over a 3-8 team and got to 9-4, people would fall all over themselves worshipping at his feet. Hell, they're doing that now for going from 5-7 to 7-4.

The bolded is an opinion, genius, not a fact. It's cool if you're the one person on Earth that cares what a champion's record was, but most people care about trophies.

Here are some facts, though: In 11 seasons, Miles went to the title game twice and finished in the top 5 4 times.

In 16 years, Fulmer went to one title game and finished in the top 5 3 times.

Need more facts?

Before 1998 Tennessee had not won a national championship since 1951.

Before 2007 LSU had not won a national championship since 2003.

Wow, that really matters. It's not like Tennessee is historically the second-best program in the entire SEC or anything.
