Since going to Tech, Leach has coordinated a top-10 scoring offense in six of the last seven seasons.

But the 2008 group has proven to be his best, averaging 48 points a game

How many conference championships did Nick Saban won when he coached at Michigan State, thats right! none, his best record was 9-2.

Record notwithstanding, LSU hired Saban and the rest is history.

Why is it impossible that something similar can happen with UT and Mike Leach?

Michigan State was in much worse condition than Tech was.

Question- you guys are all getting hot and bothered about a coach whose offense you thumbed your nose at as "gimmicky" in 1998 when he was Kentucky's OC, are you not?

Alright guys, I have a thought and I wanted to get some feedback. Leach is obviously in innovative offensive coach. He seems to be at the forefront of a spread-passing fad that is sweeping through Big 12 country. He has a bit of a pedigree, and seems to have refined his HC skills to where he is currently doing his best work.

Let's say he comes to UT. He is a smart, 'think outside the box' kind of guy. I realize it is unlikely he would retain Chavis, but would someone tell me why he wouldn't?

Some people think that Mike Leach is not a good coach, a bad recruiter, with a gimmicky offense, with no regard to defense, and a less than stellar record. All of this could be true, but, look at his team this year: more balanced on offense, and a decent defense. The results are impressive so far.
One year wonder? or... the beginning of a superstar coach.

Only time will tell. I think the gamble is worth it, others think is stupid.
Until my bubble is burst, I will keep dreaming.

OK, why would any coach that plays to win instead of playing not to loose keep Chavis? The mustang is reason enough to send him packing.

I would bet 99.9% of the posters on this board couldn't ID the mustang defense without a commentator helping. And to think it's something only Chavis runs is getting a little old

pj, if that's your argument for keeping Chavis, it needs help.

Look at Chavis' defensive stats on 3rd and 5 or better. Compare them to the rest of the SEC.

That should help you make up your mind about Chavis, the Mustang, and whatever else you call it.

I call it "bad critical situation defense". Is Chavis' defense better than the UT offense? Yes.

But that ain't saying much, is it?

my point is not for/against Chavis at all. I'm just pointing out that the ridiculous bashing of a defense very few would actually be able to ID, and that most other teams run, is old and tired.

Exactly, if Chavis was such a great DC then why havn't we heard of any other school trying to get him either as a DC or HC? Face it he is a Fulmerite made of the same mold, coach Cut is the only CPF coordinator that has broken it.

Okay, I see your point...But the "ridiculous bashing of a defense" is based on UT's performance..this year...on 3rd and long (5 yards or better). Call it what you will...Mustang, Nickel, Dime, Whatchacallit...we still stink. Okay, very few fans could recognize it. Apparently, every opposing offense can. And convert against it.

"Old and tired" is the perfect description of both the UT offense, and defense, this year. Chavis included.

New blood. Top to bottom.

Thanks for the insight without personal attacks.

I'm not in anyone's 'camp' just yet, but as I sift through endless stats and would-be coaches I just wonder where the defense is going to come from. Whether we stay 'pro-style' or go 'spread' we are going to need stout defense; I guess I would even settle for what we have now if I knew we could put up some points. That is the train of thought that led me to suggest a Leach/ Chavis combo. I also like the idea of having some (recent) SEC background on the staff.

The 3rd down issue is right on- I guess I've been so focused on how bad we are offensively that I have not been paying attention.
