Mike Leach (Texas Tech)

Its a rumor people it was on a blog!!! Until I hear Leach himself say yes I was offered the job at Tennessee It will remain just like the rest of the crap a rumor. I have heard no official comments from anyone that has credentials!

I would be ECSTATIC if this rumor has even a shred of truth to it. I was on the fence about him until I read him on wiki and also found an article about him that was in the New York Times. If a relatively middle-of-the-road school like Tech is getting NYT press, you may be doing something right, you may be doing something wrong, but you are sure doing something!

Exactly!

It is a blog... Thank you. It is a blog for Vol fans in Chattanooga to post their opinions on UT sports. It is not an article it is a blog just for the fans. Basically any info that UT fans might want to hear, true or not.

The newest rumor concerning the UT coaching search involves Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach. A television station in Austin, Texas has been reported to have leaked the information that Leach has been offered the head coaching job at Tennessee.

This information has not been confirmed at this time, but it would be interesting to see if Leach accepts the offer, if there is one, and when he would choose to announce if in fact he plans to head to East Tennessee. More information coming as more details surface.

I do find it interesting that no one has mentioned the name of the station, and I find the timing odd as well. I personally do not think that in the middle of arguably the most important coaching search in UT history that they would offer Leach at this point in the season.

Other coaching tidbits include talk about Lane Kiffin. Mike Griffith of the Knoxville News Sentinel says in his blog that a source close to the program told him that UT is interesting in Kiffin, and he believes that Kiffin has been or will be interviewed by Tennessee.

Brian Kelly is apparently still in the picture, but according to Griffith, Tennessee may not be sold on Kelly and his ability to recruit or win at the SEC level. Butch Davis has been mentioned as the “safest” choice, but he did say that he is not interested in the Tennessee job.

According to Chris Mortenson of ESPN, Tennessee has inquired of two NFL coaches to date. Former Vol assistant Lovie Smith and Jon Gruden. Word is, Tennessee wants to see if either coach has any interest in coaching for the Volunteers.

Gruden signed a contract extension with the Bucs after the 2007 season that makes him among the NFL's best-paid coaches. Smith signed an extension with the Bears after the 2006 season.

My guess is that the rumors will continue to fly for a while longer, and every coach seems to be fair game regardless of the situation. I also would think that if the rumors about Leach were true, we would have been informed of the specific information by now.

No way Guns Up can match our heavy hitters resources. If a guy can be bought and its what Haslam wants, haslam gets.

Haslam cannot match the money that T Boone Pickens has and why pay a coach with 1 good season a large contract. If Leach becomes our next coach be prepared for a downward spiral in year 3. Top recruits goes to schools and coaches with success placing players in the NFL, and if Leach was as good as touted and not a 1 season sensation he would of had more then 7 players in 9 years in the NFL. His resume for not producing NFL players will send top recruits to other schools and I don't care how could of a coach someone is, A team with 4 and 5 star recruits who want to play as a team will beat a team of 1 and 2 star recruits year in and year out.

I thought T Boone Pickens gives money to Oklahoma State?

I'm not a Leach supporter, but I do think it would be pretty easy to land top WR prospects. Also, if you're a top QB recruit, wouldn't you want to go to the SEC school where you'd get to pad some major stats? Right now he's recruiting the Texas leftovers. At Tennessee, maybe he'd have even better luck in recruiting, because we are freaking UT!!!

There was a discussion on this blogged rumor yesterday that was merged with the Leach thread since there seems to be absolutely no evidence to support.

It seems bloggers could just report anything in any of these threads.

Welcome to the Internet.

This rumor is starting to build steam.. Hearing it alot moreon alot of different forums..

but is there any way we could offer a job to someone while the season was still going?

thought that was illegal..

That's exactly why they hire search firms. While it is illegal for the university itself to make contact without permission, that doesn't apply to the search firm. They're a separate entity altogether and can call anyone they like.

As for Leach, he's not my first choice, but we could do a lot worse. Recruiting for the skill positions in the SEC will be easier for him, but I worry about how he'll do against the Sabans and Richts of the world for the rest of the posititions on the field. His choice of staff would definitely make or break him at UT.

Get your facts right. Leach is at TTU. T Boone gives to Okie State. Although T Boone might be willing to give UT money to hire Leach to get him out of the Big 12 since he crushed Okie State.

Is boone pickens paying money to Texas Tech to keep leach? He must have a lot bling to be spreading it around to other schools.

Heard the same rumor yesterday on John and Jimmy on sports animal. a guy called in and said his friend in Austin heard it and the guy that called in looked up the phone number to a station in Austin and Jimmy said he was going to call and find out if they in fact did or did not report that Leach was offered the job. I never heard if they tried to call or if they got more info on it yesterday.

Looking at Leach from a non bandwagon perspective.
If he is the hottest thing since sliced bread, why has he been at TT for 9 years? perhaps he was on the witness protection program for underrated coaches?
If he is such an excellent coach why hasn't he produced more NFL players? try 7 in his 9th year.
I would think if he was such a great coach he would not have to settle for the "scrap recruits" Highly touted recruits go to schools and coaches that place players in the NFL, he sucks at this therefore he gets the scraps.
I do not recall any school going after him last year, oops he wasn't the "flavor of the month" or had not been immortalized into this elite status yet, my bad I did not get the memo.
Some people think if he came the big recruits would follow, that way of thinking turns our program into Northwestern or Syracuse. I cannot emphasize enough the fact that 5 star recruits goes to schools where the school AND the coach place players in the NFL. Leach does not do it, therefore we fall further behind.

If putting guys in the NFL was THE benchmark, UT would be winning the NC every other year. It isn't, because the college game is different and offers non-NFL types the opportunity to play and succeed. It's teaching and coaching, and UT STINKS at it.
