Mike Keith Interviews Jim Knowles

Didn't realize the tie in with daughter and Cutcliff...think we're going into an era where our D is back to something expected at a high level every year. And, assuming our offense is always going to be in the middle/upper tier of SEC, being able to roll out a strong D gives us a chance to start competing for championships. Yes, I've got my off-season Orange colored glasses on!

A really nice interview and introduction for the next step forward. No paper hanging or excuse making , just here is where we are headed and the route we'll take. Can't wait til spring

Says Cutcliffe was a father figure to him.
Cool stuff
When my youngest daughter was a Freshman, I took her to Cutcliffe's office and introduced her to him. I told him to take care of her since she was away from home. We talked for a few minutes and he open his desk drawer. wrote a phone number on a pad and gave it to her. he told her if she ever need to talk to him to call his unlisted number. He also told her to come by his office air least once to week to check in and just talk. I believe he took better care of her than I could have ever done. Her son went Ole Miss and Cutcliffe was always around the Athletic office. and my grand son met him. He told him all about my daughter and asked him keep in touch with him. He was a QB in High School in Atlanta and walked on at Ole Miss, but didn't make the squad. About a week later , he got a call from Kiffin who asked him if he would be willing to come out for Spring practice because they were short on QBs. He did and in the Fall, Kiffin asked him if he would become a student QB coach. He agreed and this past year when the Ole Miss QBs would come off the field, they would come to my grand son instead of the OC. He graduates in May and hopes to be blessed to either stay at Ole Miss or go to LSU.

Terrific interview, well worth listening to all 25 minutes. Coach Knowles knows, Mike Keith asks great questions, & the editing is clear, concise. Minimun of "uh, y'know, blah-blah-blah". Highly recommended.
Like if Rob Lewis and Austin Price were talking

"If youre coaching effort during the game, you've made a mistake somewhere else."

"Before a game, last thing I'll say is "all of your mistakes today are on me. All of the good things are on you, but the mistakes are on me."

Dang, that hits hard. I like this dude!

Also, there is no way in HELL Bob Kesling ever pulls an interview even Close to this. Totally different interview if Bob did it. Mike Keith asked some killer questions. So glad we got him.

But you’re not wrong.

With the offenses Heupel fields each year, even a top 30 defense will have TN playing for all the marbles.

Yes, indeed. A lot of so-called journalists would gain credibility if they adhered to his stylistic approach. Frame your questions as precisely and with as much detail as you need, then sit back and keep your mouth shut. Let him provide a thorough answer without interruption before proceeding to the next question.

I would wish him success but prefer he escape the influence of Kiffin. Plenty of coaches out ther above the Mendoza line in the character department. Not all geniuses are evil geniuses, just as we learned with Oats in last nights BB game.

We got ourselves an elite DC. I still can't believe we actually landed him.

While I hope you're right I'm not sold until I see results. Maybe negavol but I hate the preseason excuse "takes a couple years to get his system installed" . What is that lube preparing me for? For all the preseason hype, Penn state layed an egg,, at least some of that was defense failures.

Are you ok? Last year was JK first year at Penn State. In the real world, there is a learning curve with complex offensive/defensive systems. That's why it take WRs 2 years to get comfortable in JH system. The OL blocking scheme was changed last year, which caused some issues. There will be a learning curve in learning a new defensive system for most of the players, BUT should be mitigated by the Penn State transfers.
I don't want to think that people don't have common sense, but then....

So you support a poor defense next season.

Huh? Why do you think it takes 3 months for players to learn the intricacies of a defense? When I started my job in Research, one of the Tech guys told me that it will take about a year to feel confident in what you're doing. Not a year to understand, but confident. I assume that its more of that with most complex jobs.
