You're going to stop being a Vols fan because of an offensive coordinator hire?

Butch is banking on his offense, emphasis on HIS, to explode in 2015 and especially 2016.

He doesn't want to start over with anyone else's offense, even if it's similar to the one we currently run.

Dobbs will be in year 3 of this offense next year and is on the verge of having a huge year. DeBord will call all the plays that Dobbs is already familiar with.

The biggest reason that DeBord is the top candidate is because A) He can help fix the OL and B) He's NOT a hot name right now. That means he won't come in with an ego and he won't demand to bring his own playbook (good luck getting a "sexy" hire to toss their playbook in the trash).

Butch wants a guy who will call plays from the Butch Jones playbook while bringing value and experience in other areas. If you read between the lines in his interviews, that's exactly what he has said.

This team will live and die by Butch's offense, because it's not going anywhere. Reinventing the wheel at this point would only set the team back.

A1A post. Don't know how someone who sits in the stands has any insights on the dynamics of this hire. Probably just as you say and need someone to maintain the current philosophy. What better than a guy who is seasoned and can offer much in the way of fundamentals and teaching moments while going with the current scheme. Someone...as you say...who doesn't necessarily want to make a name with his own playbook.

What's an Engligh Major? Your course of study?

LOL. it's a typo. Something not at all germane to the facts at hand which are as follows

1) This hire would be a joke

2) You have nothing of substance to say so you stick to looking for typographical errors.

As an aside, there are numerous volumes of published research showing there is no correlation between grammar and intelligence. As a matter of fact some research points to an inverse correlation.

Just saying...have fun with your superior grammar and sub-par intellect

Meh, the offense is staying the same no matter the OC that comes in here and I believe that is a good thing. Like most everyone I would like to see us tweak our short yardage game a little and it might have been nice to have a coach other than Thig that can say the word Vol correctly but hey........

At the VERY least recruiting will fall off. And who will coach QB's?

5 posts on this forum....yes.

And cute. You are also a member of www.lonelyunemployedenglighmajors.org.

Heyyyy! I was an English major and I'm employed!

Although... well, employed in a different field... the one I went back and got a second bachelor's degree in, completely unrelated to English... but still, I resent that remark!

I've been on board through thick and thin. I have gone more than 15 years without missing a single game. Home road or bowl. If they laced it up, I was there. I've missed weddings, funerals, birthdays etc etc etc just to watch this team play. I'm willing to bet there are fewer than 1 or 2 other people on this board who can make such a claim. I'm here to say that if we make this hire.....it will be the straw that broke my back. I'm sick and freaking tired of crap hires like this. Look at who our peers are getting....and the best we can do is this guy. I'm serious. If this goes down....I'm done. If the program isn't more dedicated to winning that that.....I'm not going to be as dedicated at watching them.

/rant.

When you say more then 15 years I hope you mean 16 and the funeral you missed is when we played FSU for the National Championship. Weddings and Birthdays can't blame you there. If we are only willing to pay bottom third in the SEC for coordinators we are going to get bottom tier coaches. I heard ticket prices were going up though.......

The really smart guys attended every Tennessee game Dooley and Kiffin coached.

It's obvious that some of you have made your minds up already on this hire, but DeBord has OC experience and won a national championship FFS. He's not a scrub who is going to call plays like a 12-year-old boy playing Madden.

Butch said he wants a guy who will improve the staff as a whole--not someone who is regarded as an offensive genius (and really--how many are there?).

The offense is already set, but I imagine DeBord may help him add some pro-style wrinkles. OSU's offense comes to mind.

Do you really want Butch to hire a guy who will scrap the existing offense and start over with something new?

When it's clicking, this offense is a thing of beauty, and it's in position to click right out of the gate next season and only get better. Starting over would be a huge mistake right now.

I don't disagree with anything you've said, but DeBord has to deliver on EVERYTHING in 2015. Everything. There will be no "wait and see" with this hire. We were poised to explode in 2015, and we better.

This hire will define the Butch tenure at UT.

So you spent all that time poring over in-depth research, and you can't even get through those posts without displaying basic skills? You've already damaged my beloved program by withdrawing your considerable funding, don't compound that by pretending your opinion of a hiring situation is proven fact. You might end up being correct, IF Butch hires Debord. You may be wrong IF Butch hires Debord. In any case, you don't matter. Read up on the research proving that. :yu:

Who said I provided "considerable funding" for the program? I make a very small donation for my very crappy season tickets....and buying tickets on the street at away games doesn't help the program does it??? Unless I missed a meeting.

This hire will be a joke. Our peers, who are hiring coaches who can make their programs better, will laugh at us. This hire might turn out to be the hire that wins Tennessee a natty next year....and the lottery ticket I bought today might win the powerball on Wednesday.....about the same odds.

They'd probably laugh at you for buying lottery tickets. Redneck 401K.

I absolutely agree. I think it would have been true with Jake as well.

Maybe Butch and DeBord watched game tape over the weekend of the UF game this year and had a good chuckle at Jake's terrible play calls and DeBord will call games 1000x better next season.

Who knows. All I know is that keeping the offense intact, while adding a few new wrinkles, is the best option right now.

Again, you are incapable of addressing the point made...and you resort to a feeble attempt at making yourself appear smarter than you are.....it didn't work.

If I actually bought a lottery ticket or not isn't the central issue of that post.(maybe I did, maybe I didn't). The issue is that we keep playing the "lottery" by hiring these lower tier coaches. How many times has it actually worked out for us? Dave Clawson?, Sal Sunseri?,Lane Kiffin?, Cuonzo Martin?, Derek Dooley? Butch Jones? Best I can remember there has only been 1 of these bargain basement hires that actually worked out...and we ended up having to fire that guy. I'm tired of Tennessee playing the "Coaching Lottery." We deserve better.

I'm Confused. Which fired guy worked out?

Then you should earmark some funds to the AD for just such a purpose. If you sue the con man that sold you the bogus personality/humor package, you can simply sign the check over. While you brave the legal process, we'll ride out WHOMEVER Butch hires...if they're successful I'm sure you'll be scarce on here. If not you'll grouse ineffectively and offer more of these self-important inane rantings for our enjoyment. :good!:

I agree that Jake would have been out anyway if he failed to deliver on everything this upcoming season too.

The problem Butch has is it all has to work this season with DeBord. He's got to make sure we are a well-oiled machine because there will be no forgiveness for Sal Sunseri 2 Electric Boogaloo. A Scott Frost or TCU poach would have kept 2016 still alive, but not DeBord.

Butch is basically saying, "I got this and it all happens in 2015. Strap in."

Huh? How do you derive that based on scant info about this position?

He isn't saying anything to anybody. In this conference, it will chew you up and spit you out, over one bad hire. As good as the recruiting has been, we've bled an inordinate amount of prized players from last year's highly acclaimed class, with transfers....some simply over the way he and his staff treat players.

How many are we going to lose from this class, and how many can we afford to keep losing, if this pattern holds up?

So, although I have been as optimistic about our outlook next season, as anyone, and like CBJ about as much as anyone....I'm not beholden to defending what looks like bad decisions. When multiple 4* players transfer out in their first season, THAT IS A PROBLEM. and one that needs to get fixed. Defending the practices that caused it, isn't helping matters.

Same thing with coaching hires. Sure, he is the one who ultimately is tasked with making the choice and living with the consequences, but when coaches make bad hires they really catch hell from their fanbase...and rightfully so. They NEED to have a little accountability from the fanbase in that regard.

We are the ones paying for the tickets, consessions, for merchandise...we're the ones making donations or withholding them. We, collectively, are the ones who ultimately pay his and the staff's salary, and we DO have a voice.

Every time a coach is fired....it's because of PRESSURE applied from the collective fanbase. So, all this "I trust Butch (despite what my better judgement tells me)," BS is the same load of crap people said in defense of Hamilton, Kiffin, Dooley, Sunseri, etc.
