Saw something shoot across the floor about a week ago and dive under the dishwasher. I only caught a glimpse but it looked bigger than a mouse - about small chipmunk sized.

Checked under the sink and lots of scat - ranging from small up to just under 1/2 inch.

Went down to the basement and see more scat.

Thought it might be from Tropical Storm Lee that dumped 2 days of drenching rain forcing rodents in.

Sealed dishwasher area and sink area with duct tape - I know it won't prevent them but it will let me know if they've been back - they haven't under the sink or in the kitchen.

Put out 4 old style wood traps in the basement. Checked this morning and they were untouched. This evening, they are all cleaned out (peanut butter) with only one being triggered but no signs it got anything - might have triggered by itself.

I've got 3 improved traps (Snap-E's) coming tomorrow.

Any other ideas to get on top of this - have heard the situation can get out of control quickly.

Release a snake in your basement. I am serious. The snake will track down whatever rodent you have. I am not suggesting the venomous variety, but a bull snake would work. Something to be concerned about is I have always heard that if you have mice there are snakes around. Getting a big bull snake will keep other snakes out and get the rodents out as well and you can find the big snake easier when you want to relocate him from your home. You may not be real keen with the idea of a snake in your house so here is a link to a variety of other traps and ideas. I was even surprised to see a tin cat as a suggestion, but it might work. Only reason I suggested a snake is I have seen a lot of old timers do that to keep the bad snakes out and get their rodent problem eliminated. Good luck.

Rodent Biology, Rat Elimination, Mouse Elimination

If you don't like any of the above than your best bet would be to bite the bullet and hire a pest guy to come and take care of it. You don't want a rodent pouplation in your home.

I endorse this method. Tell us how that works out for you

Good advice. When I was a home inspector I'd always get questions from the buyers about rodents. Often I would find snake skins in the rafters in the garage or in crawl spaces and would guarantee there were no rodents. I'd do the same but my wife thinks mice are cuter than snakes. . .

cube mouse trap.jpg

these work like a champ....put a ritz craker with Peanut butter on it inside....

just make sure you release the mouse at least 2 miles from your house...

we notice the dog kill one in the driveway, and I found a spot in the garage that had the scat...

put these out and caught 4 of them 4 days in a row...

good luck

thanks for the advice.

new traps should be here today. the wood ones are basically feeding stations.

probably not going the snake route - wouldn't even know where to begin

Whatever you do, don't use a damn glue trap.

Those things are worse than waterboarding. Got 2 baby birds stuck in one in my garage and I had trouble dealing with it as I was trying to set them free.
Physically and emotionally stressed me, tbh.

When I worked in a hardware store I refused to sell them to anyone. I just couldn't do it, even if they specifically asked for them. I wasn't the only one, either. It's just against my moral code to let anything suffer like that.

Sudden death or freedom is my plan.

Have 3 Snap-E traps (5 star Amazon) coming today and some Mice Cubes (5 star Amazon) coming tomorrow.

The war begins this evening...

Paint your face, put on camo and get some 22 ratshot. Range is good to about 20 ft.

Just pretend it's Bin Laden and your Seal Team 6.:)

I vote for the slowest, most painful thing possible. Make those MFers pay for even considering coming into your house.

The death will be quick. However I am planning to decapitate them and stick their heads on pencils for the others to see...

I had a snake in my basement & never had problems. I would see a snake skin around in the basement or along the foundations of the house. Finally I caught him just above the door in the basement & moved him out in the woods. I'm still trying to figure out what a bull snake is though. The one I caught is just your average black snake which is a variation of a rat snake.
