Meet "The Goon Squad"

Honestly I never know when I leave home each day how long I'll be there. Could be 8. Could be 12 or could be 16. Makes it damn near impossible to make plans.

That would piss me off, I hate when they spring it on you. My work lets us know in advance. Plus it's generally the same time of the year. What do you do? If you don't mind me asking.

I'm a crew leader at a paper mill. I have had them spring on me that I'm not going anywhere five minutes until quitting time. If something screws up, I'm going nowhere.

I'll be working 12's in a couple of weeks for about two weeks. Annual shutdown.

Similar thing in my case. Every 18 months we shutdown and refuel the reactors. This last time was different as we were were refueling and replacing 4 steam generators.

That sucks. When we get slow and lay people off, they want me to wait till they are clocking out. I tell them as soon as I'm told, that's a crappy way to do people. IMO

We shut down twice a year about two weeks each time for major maintenance.

Our people are led out on both sides by armed security and by armed I am referring to machine guns. I feel for people that are treated like crooks or criminals and thrown out like trash when no longer needed. Very demoralizing.

We don't have too many layoffs but the sorry bastages did have one a couple of years ago around Christmas. The three days of Christmas we get paid triple time. Cost these lower level guys about $60 bucks an hour.

Wow that's messed up.

They did that at my job one year, and didn't give the people that were laid off their Christmas bonus. Regular employees get a grand, they laid off 8 people. They treat me really well so personally I can't complain. But I don't like the people busting their butts, and getting cheated, that work under me.

My job is like that on rare occasions. If it rains a lot and the water gets muddy all of a sudden it can kind of mess things up at the plant. For the most part I couldn't ask for an easier job tho.

People appreciate a good boss with your attitude.

I go to bat for them a lot with the owner. I just believe you should take care of the people that make the business go. It's funny cause the first shift supervisor and owner get a little aggravated I think. My shift always get me a gift and card for my birthday and Christmas. We are a pretty close group as far as work goes.

I feel you. My guys are the greatest guys in the world and it really pisses me off when the company screws them over.

Makes perfect sense. I like to think my shift runs more efficiently cause they know I have their back. Plus if need be I'll do anything they will, I'll run presses or do assembly if someone needs the help. I think they appreciate that too, or they dog it knowing I will help them catch up. Lol Plus I keep it as light as possible, I'll joke with them or just do something funny to help the day go better.
